BUZZ IN BRIEF

What a year it has been in the book world! Here at Booktopia we have had loads of fun with some really special titles, great series, and some wonderful new promotions. I'd like to thank all of our customers for supporting this Australian-owned family company over the  year, and I am especially appreciative of everyone who follows Booktopia Buzz and who puts their hands up for our competitions and special offers.

After the behemoth which was the November Buzz , this edition is short ,sharp and pithy. My focus has been on relatively light summer reading and some quick last minute gift ideas.

And speaking of warmer weather, summer wouldn't be summer without the tennis. I am absolutely thrilled to be able to present to you, not only The Official Australian Open Book, but also the opportunity to receive a double pass to the women's final match in Melbourne. Interested? Go here for the details.

The Christmas catalogue is up on the site, and it is hitting the mark, as our orders can contest.

Just in case you haven't opened your email from us earlier in the week, you should do so now. We have a free shipping option on right now - the free shipping promotional code is:    CHRISTMAS    So simply use the promotional code from that email in the shopping basket. The promotion finishes this Sunday, 28th November, at midnight. Order over the next couple of days - if you leave it too late we won't be able to ensure delivery before December 25.

Wishing you the very best for the holiday season and the new year, from all of us here at Booktopia.

The next edition of Booktopia Buzz will be out in February. See you all then!

BEST FRIENDS FOREVER
WORST CASE
Only $7.95, including the first chapter of her upcoming bookJENNIFER WEINER

If you like Marian Keyes, you will love Jennifer Weiner.

Best Friends Forever depicts the nuances of female friendship with Jennifer's trademark humour and heart.
A story about betrayal and loyalty, family history and neighbourhood secrets, living through sorrow, finding love where you least expect it, and the ties that keep best friends ... forever.
Addie Downs and Valerie Adler were eight when they first met and decided to be best friends forever. But, in the wake of tragedy and betrayal during their teenage years, everything changed. Val went on to fame and fortune. Addie stayed behind in their small Midwestern town. Destiny, however, had more in store for these two. And when, twenty-five years later, Val shows up at Addie's front door with blood on her coat and terror on her face, it is the start of a wild adventure for two women joined by love and history who find strength together that they could not find alone.
"A glorious mix of mystery, relationship mending and delightful romance. Written with warmth and wit by the In Her Shoes author. This is a great read you won't want to miss". Woman's Day.
Jennifer Weiner is one of the most beloved and successful writers of contemporary women's fiction in the US and a Number 1 New York Times bestselling author with over 3 million copies of her books in print. She is also the name behind the movie In Her Shoes (a 2005 blockbuster movie starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine).
No one does female friendship better and Best Friends Forever covers the ups and downs of a long-time friendship between two very different women, with an emotional and unexpected conclusion.

Detective Michael Bennett is a classic Patterson hero. With all the suspense, action and excitement of an Alex Cross story, this brand new Bennett instalment sees the one of the one of New York's wealthiest families snatched off the street and held hostage. But rather than being the subject of demands for money, the prisoner is led on a risky and potentially fatal psychological game of cat and mouse where one wrong turn could lead to annihilation. At stake is the existence of the city of New York itself.

James Patterson is always a rip-roaring read, but at this price, he is absolutely irresistible.

Plus The Heretic's Daughter for free - save 60%THE TRAITOR'S WIFE + A FREE COPY OF THE HERETIC'S DAUGHTER by KATHLEEN KENT

Kathleen Kent first remembered hearing about Martha Carrier from her mother and grandmother. Carrier was hung in Salem Massachusetts in 1692, going to her death still refusing to admit to being a witch.
Kent, a tenth generation descendant of Carrier, paints a a haunting portrait, not just of Puritan New England, but also of one family's deep and abiding love in the face of fear and persecution in her novel The Heretic's Daughter.
Now in the pre-quel, The Traitor's Wife, Kent takes us back to Cromwellian England and establishes Martha's story from the beginning,  Free with The Traitor's Wifeincluding the secret history of her husband Thomas who had to flee across the seas to the new world.

In an exclusive Booktopia offer, for a limited time only, all orders of The Traitor's Wife will be supplied with a free copy of The Heretic's Daughter - 2 books worth $65.98 for a very special price of $25.95.

MORE DETAILS....ANITA SHREVE

The typical Anita Shreve novel, if there is such a thing, has a catastrophe at its core. Sometimes it's an old catastrophe while at other times it explodes on the page in front of you.
"I'm interested in the consequences of a single, reckless act," Shreve says. "If a driver kills a pedestrian, or if a woman looks across a crowded room at the wrong man, there's a ripple-effect on the lives of the people around them."
The secret of her popularity seems to be that she writes about ordinary people reacting to extraordinary event and Rescue certainly follows that template. Rookie paramedic Peter becomes embroiled in the life of a former patient, only to find himself nineteen years later still trying to come to terms with it all. This is a novel of trespass and forgiveness, and of a family turned inside out.

AN OBJECT OF BEAUTY
APHRODITE'S HAT
more details STEVE MARTIN

When people think of Steve Martin, they usually think of the stand-up comic whose absurdist routines in the 70s have slowly morphed into somewhat more plodding and predictable big screen roles in recent years. Less known about Martin is his musical career as a composer and a gun banjo player. Even less known is his writing - screenplays, plays , nonfiction and novels, of which Shopgirl is the most well known.
I've just read his take on the (almost) contemporary New York art scene, a novel called An Object of Beauty, which charts the rise and something (I'm not going to give it away) of art dealer Lacey Yeager, a charming and driven underling at Sotherby's whose ambition and vision set her apart....
An Object of Beauty can certainly be enjoyed as light read with an unusual setting and a good dollop of suspense - an art thriller (as opposed to a corporate thriller). It also has elements of chic lit - ambitious woman charming her way to the top. In fact however, it is a lot more than that. It is a really good primer about how the art scene works and it is an acutely observed interpretation about the ebbs and flows of power in a contemporary society. In fact, An Object of Beauty is an unusual concoction - a bit left of centre, not quite what you expect. It has a whole lot of disparate elements that make it interesting - rather like the author himself.

Unfortunately only the hardcover is available from our supplier at the moment but we have set the price of the hardcover to the same price as the paperback until the paperback is back in stock in February 2011. PLEASE NOTE: You will be able to buy the paperback in your local bookstore. They bought all the stock!

more detailsSALLEY VICKERS

Well, here's a box of delights. A book of stories mostly about Love, and mostly about Love on its away days to Venice or Rome, in grand hotels and art galleries, love in a silk nightie with a chilled glass of something fizzy in its hand. The settings and the smart, articulate protagonists give them all a surface glamour, but underneath that surface, the emotional and technical range of this collection is both impressive and delightfully disorienting.
A story that starts as an urbane account of a romantic assignation in Rome turns into a spooky "night visitation" tale that could have come from Irish folklore. A delicate depiction of the erotic charge between client and therapist turns into a drama about the aftermath of war.
Vickers is more interested in the mystery that is other people. Can even love ever really penetrate that mystery? Do we ever really know another person? Vickers's background in psychoanalysis means that she brings precision and detail to this potentially baggy emotional question.
We are living through a golden moment in the history of the short story. Short stories are the only form of entertainment left where you don't quite know what to expect. That's certainly part of the pleasure of this collection: you have no idea where these stories are going to take you. It's like playing a blindfold trust game with a particularly well-groomed, well-spoken trickster. Frank O'Connor famously said that it was possible for a bad writer to write a good novel, but only a really good writer could write a decent short story. Vickers' first collection proves beyond doubt that she's a really good writer.

With each of my books I find myself mentally revisiting some of my best and worst times as a paramedic, and Violent Exposure was no exception. The situations paramedics deal with every day can be tremendously traumatic, and I still feel it's a kind of catharsis to write about some of the things I went through, but at a distance, as I mould them to suit the story then give them to the characters.
Violent Exposure  is the fourth in my series featuring Sydney police detective Ella Marconi alongside paramedics. When Suzanne Crawford is found stabbed to death and her husband Connor is discovered to be missing, it looks like just another tragic case of domestic violence to Detective Ella Marconi. But as the investigation progresses, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems.

more details...ANTONIO TABUCCHI

Dr Pereira is a heroically unheroic figure. A lonely widower in late middle age, he is the culture editor of a small Lisbon newspaper. At work he is given an office in a separate building from the rest of the staff. He has only one friend, Silva, a university professor in a seaside spa town, and his most intimate relationship is with a photograph of his dead wife. He prides himself on rising above the political upheavals taking place in late Thirties Europe. Events, however, force him into a greater engagement with the world and it is with those events and their consequences that this intellectual thriller is concerned.
Pereira Maintains is not only the title of the novel but its first and last phrase, as well as one that recurs at regular intervals throughout the book. Thus the reader is constantly aware that the novel is the record of Pereira's testimony, perhaps to his captors after the interconnected acts of violence and defiance that conclude the book.
Pereira Maintains is a concise, intense and original novel. Tabucchi now takes his place alongside Irène Némirovsky, Sándor Márai and Stefan Zweig as one of the great Continental rediscoveries for English-speaking readers of recent years. Unlike those others, though, he is happily still around to enjoy the plaudits.

more details THE FEAR by Peter Godwin

The tragedy that is contemporary Zimbabwe was been chronicled meticulously by expatriot Peter Godwin who slipped back into the country just in time to watch what was hoped to be the demise of Robert Mugabe. Instead of collapse, he witnessed what became known as The Fear. In a continent that has had more than its share of despotic regimes which rely on torture, corruption, persecution and cronyism, Mugabe's tyranical grip on power surpassed just about every thing. Godwin's style is both accessible and credible, which makes his account of very recent events only too real.

more detailsALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER: MEMOIR OF A SIXTIES REVOLUTIONARY by MICHAEL HYDE

Michael Hyde spent the sixties opposing Australian and US involvement in the Vietnam War - a conflict at the heart of that turbulent decade. As opposition to the war grew exponentially, tens of thousands of young people took up the fight against it and the social ills of racism, poverty and inequality.

Michael's personal journey from Christian pacifist to student revolutionary was as wild as the sixties itself. Trips to the Cultural Revolution in China and to Cambodia to meet the Viet Cong, breaking the law, demonstrations, arrests, living on the run, communal houses, music, drugs and sexual liberation were all part of the roller coaster of rebellion.

The young radicals wanted to make the world a better place and they weren't about to be deterred. This is one of the first stories of that era reported through the eyes of someone right in the thick of it, someone who lived every moment of the Sixties, someone who was there and who remembers.

Moratorium bad boy, and partner-in-crime with Albert Langer, Hyde's account is timed for the recovery of his ASIO file.

MIND GAMES

MORE DETAILSMARTIN COHEN

We are in The Brain That Changes Itself territory here. Cohen 's  healthy  self-depreciatory style  helps to make often complex ideas light and entertaining to read.

This book is very much in that vein of bringing philosophy to the masses and encouraging people to think. It's somewhat ironic that in an age where information is more prevalent than ever before, the (inter)net effect of this is to make people think less about things, not least as we don't seem to have time to think as we are too busy taking all the information to think about it. Of course, there's a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put one in a fruit salad. Cohen's aim is to get the reader to stop and think about 'stuff' and to think about the process of thinking.

Having spoken to someone who recently went to London and saw this exhibition, I know the book will be absolutely fascinating. What a fantastic idea - the world as we know it summed up in 100 key pieces from the British Museum. A dramatic and original approach (including at the exhibition the opportunity of actually holding a 250,000 year old stone tool from Olduvai Gorge, which almost makes it worth the trip in itself), MacGregor crosses the globe and the centuries and reexamines our story through the objects we have made.

A REAL TREAT FOR CHILDREN
THE FLEURVILLE TRILOGY by the COUNTESS DE SÉGUR

Part of the joy of working in this business is being able to bring great books into the homes of readers. When those books are for children, it is even more of a privilege.

The Fleurville Trilogy is a very special collection of children's books that were first published in France 150 years ago. Written by Sophie Feodorovna Rostopchine, the Countess de Ségur between 1857 and 1869, the trilogy is still finds an enthusiastic audience among young readers today, and indeed, they form part of that body of compulsory readimg material which is said to help form the national identity.

François Mauriac has described her characters as following him into his bedroom at night to populate his dreams, much as they have done for generations of children. It has also been suggested that her work constitutes a children's human comedy, rather like Balzac's Comédie Humaine does for adults.

The triology paints a picture of a well-to-do family under the Second Empire, describing the perennial childhood issues through stories of solidarity, curiosity and the shifting alliance of friendship .

To date, the Countess' books have sold more than 30 million copies although until now she has remained almost entirely unknown in the English speaking world. They have recently been translated by an Australian, Stephanie Smee who came across the books in 2006 through the literary supplement of Le Figaro which profiled the Countess' legacy.

These charming editions make a lovely set. For confident readers of 7 plus, or a shared read aloud favourite for younger children, the three books make a lovely gift. If there is a place in your heart for Pippi Longstocking, Wind in the Willows, Milly Molly Mandy and Winne the Pooh, there is sure to be room for The Fleurville Trilogy.
