Booktopia Food & Drink Buzz
October 2010 | Pre-heat the oven
Welcome to the October Food and Drink BUZZ
We all love our food. There is no doubting it. But I reckon, in the last six months, our love of food has broadened to become a deep love of culinary possibilities. Our taste buds are hungry for new things. Out tummies are willing us to be daring. Our eyes are becoming more picky, wanting our diet to look, as well as taste, great.

Blame TV shows like MasterChef, celebrity chefs like Nigella, Jamie Oliver, Pete Evans;  blame all the fine restaurants, like Quay, competing for our attention, but, if we're honest, we know we only have ourselves to blame, for more and more of us are turning dull dinners into minor masterpieces. Australians are back in the kitchen and this time, we're loving it!

October is Food Festival month, too, the biggest being Crave: The Sydney International Food Festival running from 1 to 31 October.

There has never been a better moment for Australian foodies. The best of the worlds fare, the best of our own, is at our finger tips.

Let's enjoy it!
Get cooking!

Kind Regard

Click here for more details or to buy Kitchen: Recipes from the Heart of the Home Nigella Lawson

The expansive narrative and the rich feast of recipes make this a natural successor to Nigella's classic first book - a kind of 'How to Eat... everyday' for the twenty-first century, with a wealth of photographs from the instructive to the glorious - and a tie-in major BBC TV series in the autumn.

A big, compendious, comfortable, informative and utterly engaging book, Kitchen brings us feel-good food for cooks and eaters, whether Express-style and exotic-easy during the week, or leisurely and luxuriating (in the spirit of How to be a Domestic Goddess and Feast) at weekends or for occasions. Divided into two parts - Kitchen Quandaries and Kitchen Comforts - Nigella gives us the wherewithal to tackle any situation and satisfy all nourishment needs. But real cooking is often about leftovers, too, so here one recipe can lead to another...from ham hocks to pea soup and pasties, from chicken to Chinatown salad.

This isn't just about being thrifty but about demonstrating how recipes come about, and giving new inspiration for last-minute meals and souped-up store cupboard suppers. As well as offering the reader a mouthwatering array of new recipes, both comforting and exciting - from clams with chorizo to Guinness gingerbread, from Asian braised beef to flourless chocolate lime cake, from Pasta alla Genovese to Venetian carrot cake - Nigella rounds up her kitchen kit must-haves (telling us, too, what equipment we don't need) and highlights individual ingredients - both basic essentials and modern-day life-savers. But above all, she reminds the reader how much pleasure there is to be had in real food, and in reclaiming the traditional rhythms of the kitchen, as she cooks to the beat of the heart of the home, creating simple recipes to make life less complicated.

Click here for more details or to buy Risotto with Nettles Anna Del Conte

Born in Milan, Anna del Conte grew up in Italy in a gentler time.

When war came to Italy everything changed: her family had to abandon their apartment and the city for the countryside, where the peasants still ate well, but life was dangerous...

As a teenager, Anna became used to throwing herself into a ditch as the strafing planes flew over, and was imprisoned, twice. Her story is informed and enlivened by the food and memories of her native land - from lemon granita to wartime risotto with nettles, from vitello tonnato to horsemeat roll, from pastas to porcini.

Anna arrived in England in 1949 to a culinary wasteland. She married an Englishman and stayed on, and while bringing up her children, she wrote books which inspired a new generation of cooks.

This is a memoir of a life seen through food - each chapter rounded off with mouthwatering recipes.

Recipes for easily accessible, fresh-from-the-garden Italian food from a Calabrian native and "bountiful good cook" (The Atlantic).

At the tip of Italy's "boot" lies Calabria. It is a beautiful, mountainous region populated by fishermen and small farmers. Rosetta Costantino grew up in this rugged landscape-her father a shepherd and wine maker and her mother his tireless assistant.

When her family immigrated to California, they re-created a little Calabria on their property, cooking with eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers from their garden, fresh ricotta made from scratch, and pasta fashioned by hand. A frugal people, Calabrians are master preservers, transforming fresh figs into jam, canning fresh tuna in oil, and sun-drying peppers for the winter. Now Rosetta shares her family's story and introduces readers to the fiery simplicity of Calabrian food. The first cookbook of a little-known region of Italy, My Calabria celebrates the richness of the region's landscape and the allure of its cuisine. This is a cookbook for our time: a reminder of how ingenious and resourceful cooks can create a gorgeous local cuisine.

The Glycaemic Index is a measure of how fast carbohydrates are broken down by your body and therefore how fast they raise blood sugar levels. And your diet is easier to follow! Foods are divided up into low, medium and high GI. Low-GI foods are slow to digest, making you feel less hungry and helping you lose weight. The GI of a dish can be affected by a number of factors - fibre and fat content, preparation and cooking method - but dietitian Mabel Blades has simplified it so all you have to do is follow her advice and watch the weight fall off.

The GI diet will revolutionise your eating habits. With over 100 delicious and specially crafted recipes, including carbs that will help you stave off those hunger pangs, this is the easy way to lose weight and eat well.

Audrey Gordon is one of our best known and respected cookery writers. She started her career as lifestyles editor at Formal Living magazine, before moving on to Implausible Homes  where she forged a reputation for no-nonsense, practical food commentary. Three times voted Britain's Sternest Cook, Audrey's first book Pressure Cooking was an instant classic, as was her follow up Fussy Food . Since then she has produced a string of titles, including: Let's Blanch! Cooking with Lamb, Cooking with Beef, Cooking with Children, Audrey's Kitchen, A Taste of Audrey and Audrey's Aromas (now out of print).

Now, join Audrey Gordon as she eats her way through central Italy. Audrey Gordon's Tuscan Summer features over 50 mouth-watering recipes, along with several others involving tinned beans, that capture the very essence of Tuscan cuisine.

'My book is essentally a practical guide that will help you plan and carry off everything from a lazy Sunday brunch with friends to a formal sit-down banquet for 300 lactose-intolerant, diabetic vegans with severe peanut allergies...'

Choose from quick and easy snacks like artichoke soup and bruschetta, through to more time-consuming dishes, such as Audrey's signature 73 Day Slow Roasted Pork that will delight the fussiest of diners. As well as mouth-watering recipes, Audrey presents evocative reflections on the timeless beauty of every day Tuscan life, along with her thoughts on the inadequacies of Italy's motorway system.

This book is a hilarious send up of a certain kind of cook book. Nigella beware! Perfect for any lover of good food and wicked fun!
