Welcome to the September Crime and Mystery Buzz

There's no helping it, we're sliding into the busiest months of the publishing year. From here to Christmas there will be more book launches than days in the calendar. It is the boom time for struggling writers, underpaid reviewers and librarians - over the next few months they will gorge themselves on free nibbles and cheap booze, fattening themselves for the lean late summer months.

Right now the big names in Crime Writing are jostling for position. No one wants to launch too soon, no one wants to leave it too late. To launch and be eclipsed by a bigger name! To hesitate and miss a golden opportunity!

To my thinking those who release books in September are the smart ones. It is the lull before the storm, when your voice can be heard.

Here are the best books due for release of the next few weeks.

Kind Regards

John Purcell,

Summer, 1545. England is at war. Henry VIII's invasion of France has gone badly wrong, and a massive French fleet is preparing to sail across the Channel. As the English fleet gathers at Portsmouth, the country raises the largest militia army it has ever seen. The King has debased the currency to pay for the war, and England is in the grip of soaring inflation and economic crisis.

Meanwhile Matthew Shardlake is given an intriguing legal case by an old servant of Queen Catherine Parr. Asked to investigate claims of "monstrous wrongs" committed against a young ward of the court, which have already involved one mysterious death, Shardlake and his assistant Barak journey to Portsmouth.

Once arrived, Shardlake and Barak find themselves in a city preparing to become a war zone; and Shardlake takes the opportunity to also investigate the mysterious past of Ellen Fettipace, a young woman incarcerated in the Bedlam. The emerging mysteries around the young ward, and the events that destroyed Ellen's family nineteen years before, involve Shardlake in reunions both with an old friend and an old enemy close to the throne. Events will converge on board one of the King's great warships, primed for battle in Portsmouth harbour: the Mary Rose...

Happy Birthday to P.D. James!
Click here for more details or to buy P.D. James novels P.D. James recently turned ninety!

Asked whether there would be another Dalgliesh novel, PD James answered, 'I'm not sure yet. Life has been so busy I have only done 10,000 words in six months. I don't want the standard to drop and I don't want a reviewer to be saying: "It's a remarkable book, for a 91 year-old." And I don't want them to say: "It's not vintage PD James." If I'm not doing it as well as I have done it in the past, then there is no point in my doing it at all.'

Book of the Month
Click here for more details or to buy Star Island STAR ISLAND by Carl Hiaasen

Carl Hiaasen's first book for adults in four years has gone straight to the top of the New York Times Bestseller List! (for Hardcover Fiction)

22-year-old pop star Cherry Pye is attempting a comeback from her latest drug and alcohol disaster. Ann DeLusia is Cherry's 'undercover stunt double', standing in for Cherry whenever the singer is too wasted to go out in public.

But, one night, Ann-as-Cherry is mistakenly kidnapped from a Miami hotel by an obsessed paparazzo named Bang Abbott. Now the challenge for Cherry's handlers (comprising the world's pushiest stage mother; perverted record producer; nipped-and-tucked twin publicists; weed-strimmer-wielding bodyguard) is to rescue Ann while keeping her existence secret from the public.

Will Bang achieve his fantasy of a private photo session with Cherry? Will Cherry sober up in time to lip-synch her concert tour and promote her new album, Skantily Klad? And will Ann escape from Cherry's shadow?

The New York Times says: Trying to follow the plot, which involves a supporting cast of crooked politicians and predatory developers, is a little like walking a puppy. But the outlandish events soar on the exuberance of Hiaasen's manic style, a canny blend of lunatic farce and savage satire.

If you've never read a Carl Hiaasen novel, you're in for a treat.
