Booktopia Food & Drink Buzz
April 2011 | Autumn Edition
The Food and Drink Buzz is the most dangerous part of my job. I have to bring forth the best books from the hundreds on offer and those soon to be. Get this wrong and an army of passionate foodies will come down upon my head like a tonne of bricks.

Foodies may look mild mannered but beneath that welcoming smile, beneath that desire to please, lurks a passionate soul who will stop at nothing to serve up or devour the best meal on the night. If I get the following selection wrong, I may be chop suey!

With this in mind, I have tried to walk the middle road between the hardcore foodie and the TV dinner foodie, offering up both the serious and the frivolous, the celebrity chef and the chef chef, the Sunday roast and Coq au Vin...

Some hardcore foodies have embraced the celebrity chef. Some haven't. The coward in me would like to remind you all that food is meant to be fun (he says, ducking for cover).

No more words. Let's eat.

Kind Regards

John Purcell

Click here for more details or to buy Two Asian Kitchens TWO ASIAN KITCHENS by Adam Liaw, Australia's MasterChef 2010

"Before I was 18 I had lived in more than 20 different homes across four countries, and each of their kitchens has left me with unique memories. My family crossed three countries in as many generations, and yet my story is not unique in Australia. As a child, every week I would eat my way around the world.

For me, Hainanese chicken rice is not just a good lunch: it is the latest in a thousand delicious plates of chicken my grandmother has lovingly prepared for our family. When I cook siew yuk, I am replaying the memory of my father carrying roasted pork belly home from the market on any of a hundred Saturday afternoons in Adelaide. A plate of beef with oyster sauce reminds me of all the times my mother served it up next to an equally huge platter of beef stroganoff to feed eight hungry children around the dinner table.

The Two Asian Kitchens in my life are The Old Kitchen and The New Kitchen. The Old Kitchen represents the traditional dishes of my family history - hawker noodles, Japanese yakitori, sour and salty Malaysian laksa. The New Kitchen features modern dishes that draw on the memorable flavours and experiences of my own life as a migrant in Australia."

Click here for more details or to buy The Sorcerer's Apprentices: A Season elBulli

A SEASON elBULLI by Lisa Abend

Elected best restaurant in the world by Restaurant magazine an unprecedented five times, elBulli is where chef Ferran Adrià's remarkable cuisine comes to life-with dragon cocktails that make the drinker breathe smoke and caviar made from tiny spheres of olive oil. elBulli is also the object of culinary pilgrimage-millions clamor every year for a reservation at one of its tables.

Yet few people know that, behind each of the thirtyor more courses that make up a meal at elBulli, a small army of stagiaires-apprentice chefs-labor at the precise, exhausting work of executing Adrià's astonishing vision. In The Sorcerer's Apprentices: A Season in the Kitchenat Ferran Adrià's elBulli, Lisa Abend explores the remarkable system that AdriÀ uses to run his restaurant and, in the process, train the next generation of culinary stars.

Granted more access to Adrià and the elBulli kitchen than any other writer in the restaurant's history, Abend follows thirty-five young men and women as they struggle to master the cutting-edge techniques, grueling hours, furious creativity, and interpersonal tensions that come with working at this celebrated institution. Her lively narrative captures a great cast, including a young Korean cook who camps on the doorstep of elBulli until he is allowed to work in the kitchen; an ambitious chef from one of Switzerland's top restaurants struggling to create his own artistic vision of cuisine; and an American couple whose relationship may not withstand the unique pressures of the restaurant. What emerges is an irresistible tale of aspiring young talents caught, for good or ill, in the opportunity of a lifetime.

Taken together, their stories form a portrait of the international team that helps make a meal at elBulli so memorable. They also reveal a Ferran Adrià few ever see, one who is not only a genius chef and artist but also a boss, teacher, taskmaster, businessman, and sometimes- flawed human being. Today, food has become the focus of unprecedented attention, and The Sorcerer's Apprentices also explores the strange evolution-in less than two decades-of a once-maligned profession into a source of celebrity.

Authors Teresa Oates and Angela Villella are passionate in their quest to preserve the vibrant food culture of their parents' native Calabria, and to introduce new generations to the joys of simple, generous cooking with the freshest produce.

Join them as they record the sacred seasonal rituals of their childhood, from the production of a year's supply of passata using summer's tomatoes, through autumn's ceremonial preservation of vegetables and olives, to the 'making' of the pig in winter, when an entire pig is converted into a pantry full of salumi. Learn how to match pasta types to sauces, how to prepare traditional Italian favourites like minestrone and lasagne, and how to create mouth-watering sweet treats for special family celebrations.

Mangia! Mangia! embraces the one constant of their migrant families' journeys - their food - prepared with an innate wisdom and served with a generosity of spirit. My Favourite Ingredients

by Skye Gyngell

Acclaimed chef and food writer Skye Gyngell's cooking naturally follows the ebb and flow of the seasons, taking advantage of the best ingredients when they are seasonally available. My Favourite Ingredients focuses on what she loves cooking the most - prime foods such as fish and shellfish, cheese, nuts, pulses and grains that always feature in her menus; seasonal favourites including asparagus, cherries, tomatoes and game that she particularly loves; and flavour enhancers like garlic, olive oil, vinegar and honey which are such an important part of her cooking.
