Click for more detail or to order Monsieur CadichonMONSIEUR CADICHON: MEMOIRS OF A DONKEY by COUNTESS DE SEGUR, translated by STEPHANIE SMEE

Monsieur Cadichon is a lively and intelligent donkey who wants his readers to know that although he was naughty in his youth and was punished severely, he is now reformed. His main aim is to refute the stereotypical image of donkeys as ignorant and stubborn and reveal, through his stories, the true, gentle and wise nature of donkeys. Cadichon's antics are guaranteed to make you laugh! Cadichon can also be vengeful when overworked and underfed. His retaliations and plans for revenge will have readers shaking their heads in disapproval but ultimately, as Cadichon encounters love and acceptance through his adventures, we come to admire his bravery and loyalty.

Last year, the countess' books from mid 19th century France were sensitively translated into English and beautifully packaged and they became the must-have gift books for 7 to 10 year olds. All perfect to read out loud, Monsieur Cadichon is the latest to be finally available to English speaking readers.

There is a reason why children have been reading these books for well over one hundred years and that is because they are timeless.

To celebrate the publication of the story of the donkey, all customers ordering Monsieur Cadichon before December 20 will go into the draw to win one of two sets of the countess' very popular previous titles - Sophie's Misfortunes, Camille and Madeleine and The Holidays.

ORIGINAL SHAKESPEARE
Click for more detail or to order First Folio of ShakespeareI have never had the opportunity to present anything like this before, and I probably won't again.

For most of us, English literature starts and ends with Shakespeare. Your Rowlings and Reillys will come and go, but in 500 years time, we will still be referencing and performing Shakespeare.

Back in print, for the first time in a generation, is the peerless First Folio of Shakespeare: Norton Facsimile edition. This is a photographic facsimile reproduction of each of his plays, as they were originally published in 1623, only 7 years after his death.

As a special Booktopia exclusive, each copy of the First Folio of Shakespeare comes with a free copy of The Art of Love , a gorgeous hardback illustrated edition of the most beautiful love passages in Shakespeare's plays and poetry, with an RRP of $49.95.

Only one thousand of these Norton First Folio facsimiles are being produced, and only a very small proportion of them are coming into the country sometime around December 10. I already have orders for nearly 100 but there are a handful left for those of you who are quick.

Meticulously bound and boxed, this weighty book is an artefact of literary history. 900 pages reproduced lovingly by the Folger Shakespeare Library, which houses the largest collection of its type in the world, this is the most exact version of original Shakespeare in existence. It has become the benchmark for scholars and actors world over. It is also a stunningly beautiful collector's piece.

The original First Folio of Shakespeare - one of a handful left in the worldThere is a fascinating story behind this full-size photographic facsimile of all of Shakespeare's original comedies, tragedies and histories. Originally, the plays were printed on a hand-operated press, two pages at a time. Mistakes were made and  there are many variations in the original material. This collection, (pictured right), which includes 36 plays, 18 of which were unperformed in Shakespeare's life, was reprinted 3 times in the first 100 years, which is really quite remarkable. Twenty-nine of these original first editions are in the Folger collection and they have been gone through line by line so that what we have today in the facsimile edition is the most accurate version of the original.

Do go through to our site so you can see inside the book. And stop to watch the clip as well so you can really get a sense of importance of this wonderful volume.

For lovers of literature, lovers of history, and for collectors, this is simply a must.

NEW FICTION FOR DECEMBER
Locked On

Can you hear the waves breaking on the sand yet? Can you smell the smoke from the barbie? Yes, holiday season is almost upon us and that means it is time for the big, stretch out, relaxing read.

Topping the charts of December releases will be Tom Clancy's Locked On. Another one that is going to be in everyone's Christmas stocking will be Diana Gabaldon's The Scottish Prisoner, in which she neatly brings together both the Outlander and Lord John fantasy series giving Lord John and Jamie equal billing as characters.

For fast and furious action there is Crichton's Micro, a new Lisa Marklund and Assassin's Creed (out the day after the new game).

The phenomenally successful The Land of Painted Caves   is finally coming in a new more affordable paperback and there are bind-ups and treasuries aplenty from your favourite authors.

As you can see from the selection below, this isn't the time for the quiet, introspective read - but I have added in a few of sleepers like The Thread, The Seamstress and my personal favourite Perlmann's Silence, for those of you who can't quite come at James Patterson.

THE THREAD by VICTORIA HISLOP

THE SEAMSTRESS by MARIA DUEŇAS
Click for more detail or to order The Thread

Why she is not more popular in this country I cannot fathom, but The Thread is just the novel to put Victoria Hislop on the  map in Australia, just as she dominates in the UK.
Victoria Hislop's third novel, the appropriately titled The Thread , is pleasingly complex. The story traces several generations of a fictional Greek family called Komninos against the historical backdrop of the rise and fall of Greece's second city, Thessaloniki, in the 20th century. To make things even knottier, most of the characters have some connection to the textile industry, and while for some this is booming, for others it remains a labour of love.
The most fascinating element of the book develops out of the history of Thessaloniki itself. Historically, the city has an impressive heritage at stake. Tracing her foundation back to the family of Alexander the Great, she became, to the Byzantine empire, a jewel second only to Constantinople.
The catastrophic fire of 1917, which razed much of the city, is a turning point in Hislop's story. After witnessing the destruction of their grand sea-view villa, the Komninos family is forced to take up residence in a poorer quarter - a melting pot of Christians, Muslims and Jews. The loss of much the city's architecture is juxtaposed with a sequence of meetings and scenarios that will reverberate across future generations of this family.
The Thread is at once commercial and literary - the perfect summer. No wonder it has been chosen as the Australian Women's Weekly great read of the month.

This story of  a seemingly ordinary woman who uses her talent and courage to transform herself first into a prestigious couturier and then into an undercover agent for the Allies during World War II has been a runaway bestseller in Europe and America (where it is known as The Time in Between).
Now translated into 20 languages, it comes with the blessing of both Mario Vargas Llosa and Kate Moreton (now there's an interesting combination). The Seamstress is one of those rare, richly textured novels that  reminds us how it feels to be swept away by a masterful storyteller.
María Dueñas, 47, never intended to write a bestselling novel. She never even dreamed of becoming a fiction writer. A professor for almost 20 years, with a Ph.D. in English philology, Dueñas says she was perfectly happy teaching at the University of Murcia in Spain until she was inspired by her mother's experience of adventure, romance and political conspiracies to research the historical background of a fictionalised tale of intrigue.
The novel is set in Madrid, North Africa, and Lisbon, from the start of the Spanish Civil War through WWII. Dueñas' mother was born in 1940 in the Spanish protectorate of Morocco. Drawing from the testimony of her family, Dueñas used their memories to create the atmosphere for the novel before broadening out with research around the Spanish administration and in particular, the intriguing  Juan Beigbeder, the high commissioner of the protectorate in Morocco.

FREUDIAN SLIP by MARION von ALDERSTEIN
PERLMANN'S SILENCE by PASCAL MERCIER

A clever and classy title, from a clever and classy woman. Von Adlerstein is old enough to have wanted to marry Errol Flynn when she was a teen and young enough to have been both a fashionista and a feminist since she burst into advertising and publishing in the 60s. She hasn't stopped influencing us since.
Freudian Slip is her first novel and it is set in Sydney. Full of "Lunch at Beppi's/ Cocktails in the boardroom" scenes, it is a great primer on advertising in the sixties when it was every man - or woman - for themselves. Marion should know all about that - she was there at the time.

From our guest reviewer, Booktopia's Sarah McDuling:
Reading The Freudian Slip has confirmed what I have long suspected. I was definitely born in the wrong time. There is a wonderful sense of authenticity about this engaging debut novel, most likely because Marion von Adlerstein is the real deal. She is not merely paying homage to a bygone era but drawing on personal experience to evoke a real sense of time and place. In this instance, the time is 1963, the place is Sydney and the result is a charming Chick Lit romp with a retro twist. This is the kind of addictive summer read that will no doubt provide many a nostalgic pang to those lucky enough to have experienced Sydney in the 1960s. For those who only wish they were that lucky, The Freudian Slip is even better than an episode of Mad Men.

Plagiarism - the word, not the concept - did not enter the English language until 1597. Some 20 years earlier the crime of plagium , meaning kidnapping or, as the Oxford English Dictionary puts it, "man-stealing", became recognised in English law. Therefore the taking of another person's thoughts, writings or inventions and calling them one's own seems to have been considered in the 16th century a kind of identity theft.
In our time, however, plagiarism has become a dirty word, especially in academic circles. In the case of the widowed, unhappy and lonely Dr Philipp Perlmann, a distinguished linguistics professor and the protagonist of Pascal Mercier's new novel, it is the breaking point that allows the troubled scholar a deep, rich, complex search for the meaning of self.
During one of many learned conferences, Perlmann is approached by a representative of the Olivetti company, who wishes to engage his services to set up a research group with a linguistic theme. Money and means are available, and the choice of participants will be Perlmann's. The meeting of the team will take place at a quiet seaside town near Genoa, a beautiful resort overlooking the sea. Reluctantly, and not quite certain why he is reluctant, Perlmann agrees. But as the day of the first conference approaches, as the participants begin to arrive, his meagre confidence fails him. He no longer knows why he is here, what he is supposed to be doing, what he is expected to say. Perlmann falls into a mental and physical silence from which he painfully draws a few words and gestures. Unable to find a way out of his agony, unable to come to terms with the grief of a life whose purpose he cannot fathom, Perlmann borrows the thoughts and words of another man. He resorts to plagiarism.
Throughout the days preceding the conference, Perlmann has with him a paper by a Russian linguistic, Vassily Leskov, on how memory is informed by language. Suddenly, when he can't avoid stating the subject of his own (unwritten) presentation, Perlmann gives Leskov's subject as his own. With the help of a dictionary, he translates the Russian paper and copies it for the other participants. Then Leskov announces his arrival. The story acquires here a Hitchcock-like suspense. Suicide and murder are contemplated. Complications multiply. Perlmann's anguish grows. The day of the presentation dawns.
What might have been, in less talented hands, an amusing literary thriller is, in Mercier's prose, superbly translated by Shaun Whiteside, something far more complex.
Mercier's previous novel, the deservedly popular Night Train to Lisbon, showed great intelligence and story-telling power; Perlmann's Silence is a bolder attempt, and reaches greater depths.

WHITE PEARL by KATE FURNIVALL

SORRY by ZORVAN DRVENKAR

From the author:
I am thrilled with the cover which says it all - the sweltering heat of Malaya, a young woman caught up in the danger of enemy airplanes and the passion of a love affair that changes the course of her life forever.
To explore Malaya (yes, I know it's Malaysia now but in 1941 when the book is set, it was called Malaya) was an exciting change after my last three books in Russia . I loved the challenge of learning to understand somewhere completely new to me, a different culture, a different world. I chose Malaya and I chose 1941 because it was a time when this astonishingly beautiful country was poised on the brink of catastrophe and when internal conflicts were preparing to tear the country apart as it tried to throw off the heavy yoke of colonialism.
So what's the story about?
Connie Hadley is my heroine. Warm and passionate but flawed. As the glamorous wife of a plantation owner, her life appears pampered and comfortable. But she is hiding a devastating secret that could destroy her marriage. Her world is blown apart on the day of the infamous attack on Pearl Harbour, when the Japanese army also invades Malaya. Connie takes the decision to flee on the family's yacht, The White Pearl, so she sails with her husband and son and a handful of friends in search of safety.

From Words without Borders:
Rare is the thriller that surpasses the limits of genre fiction. But Zoran Drvenkar's Sorry is one such book: a thriller on its face, but also a thoughtful study in guilt and innocence, violence and redemption. It alternates among the first, second and third persons, with almost each of the eight chapters bifurcating into "After" and "Before" sections. Drvenkar flirts with postmodern forms and high jinks but manages to avoid sounding gimmicky. These narrative inversions are organic to a story that abounds in unexpected turns and keeps the reader exactly as blind as the characters themselves.
Four friends are introduced to us in an early chapter. They are young and ambitious, but also bored. So one of them comes up with the strange business idea to sell apologies-literally to apologize, on a contract basis, for others' misdeeds. It is this somewhat bizarre ambition that leads to their intersection with the killer. You are the killer.
"You" are the most important character-the most complicated and the one most in need. It is You who hires the four young new entrepreneurs to craft an apology for the first, then second, murders you commit. The deaths of all who perish in the book-and there are plenty-affect the innocent, the guilty, and the accidental bystander. And yet, for all the havoc you've wreaked, You are only looking for retribution. Once you exact it, You would like to apologize: for the two murders you must commit to exact a revenge for an indignity suffered during childhood at the hands of the murdered two.

LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS: A MISCELLANY by MANDY KIRKBY & VANESSA DIFFENBAUGH
Click for more detail or to order Anyone who loved Vanessa Diffenbaugh's Language of Flowers (and by that, I really mean, anyone who read it) a few months ago, will want this delightful little gift hardback accompanying volume which explains and illustrates the meanings of floral tributes.

In fact, restricting this book to Diffenbaugh's fans would do it a disservice. It is charming and informative.

While everyone knows that red roses signify love, few may realise that an entire language of flowers exists with every bloom, foliage and plant having a particular emotion attached, be it hazel for reconciliation, wisteria for welcome or ivy for fidelity.

This unique language was created by the romantic early Victorians who carefully planned every bouquet and posy so as to deliver a desired message.

Bringing the language to a new generation, this beautifully illustrated miscellany contains fifty profiled flowers, a dictionary searchable by emotion, and ideas for creating bouquets and arrangements for specific occasions. This gift book is an unusual present that any flower lover will want to own.

A NATION IN THE MAKING: AUSTRALIA AT THE DAWN OF THE MODERN ERA by ALASDAIR MacGREGOR

GREAT AUSTRALIAN OLD-TIMERS: MAGNIFICENT STORIES FROM MIGHTY AUSTRALIANS by SANDY THORNE

This is an absolute find! The works of two early Australian photographers which have remained largely unseen for more than one hundred years have been lovingly put together in one big hardback, giving us a record of city and country life from a time before any of us can remember.
The Tyrrell Collection consists of 7903 glass plate negatives from the studios of Charles Kerry (1857-1928) and Henry King (1855-1923) who had two of Sydney's principal photographic studios in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Tyrrell Collection, which until now has been housed as separate plates in the Powerhouse Museum archives, provides an important record of city and country life at the time with a number of broad themes: Sydney and suburbs; south coast; Blue Mountains; transport; rural New South Wales; shipping; caves; sports; Indigenous peoples of Australia and the South Pacific.
A Nation in the Making brings to the reading public the very best of that iconic, yet largely unknown, collection.

From the author:

Old-Timers is a collection of condensed life stories from twenty fascinating Australians who have led unusual lives, or achieved a great deal. They are from vastly different backgrounds but they are all people who have lived for a long time, and experienced huge challenges, triumphs, and tragedies; known fear, great danger, desolation and joy. They are all magnificent characters in their own style. As my personal writing style is conveying dry Aussie humour on paper (as well as on-stage), there are many laughs amongst the admiration, tears and trauma.
From the publisher:
Meet Ron Canlin, who one day began sculpting the sandstone walls of his opal mine. Ten years later, every drive and tunnel in Ron's claim is full of wonderful sculptures - the eighth wonder of the world. Or Peter Venables, with his flowing white beard, puffing his pipe like a character from the pioneering 1800s, whose teams of Clydesdales plough, sow and harvest the crops they eat. Or Janie Marshall, contract musterer, ex-amateur jockey, known as 'F...kin' Jenny' after her favourite word, which she roars frequently-even in front of the parson! She's as outback as a road train full of emus, and you'll love reading her story.
In Old-Timers, jillaroo, opal miner and bush humorist Sandy Thorne has assembled twenty vital snapshots of Australian life that inspire and enthral with their energy, originality and genuine pioneering spirit.

EVERYDAY KINDNESS: SHORTCUTS TO A HAPPIER AND MORE CONFIDENT LIFE by STEPHANIE DOWRICK

WISDOM: LIFE LESSONS FROM AN AUSTRALIAN LEGEND by RON BARASSI & JAMES MONEY (illustrator)

Described as having an original, powerful mind, Stephanie Dowrick challenges people to have an interior life and to be introspective. And she does it in a thoroughly non-sentimental, pro-active fashion. Her greatest asset is her own very distinctive voice, a clarity and directness of address which creates an immediate empathy with the reader.
About her latest book, Everyday Kindness, she writes a kinder life will always be a happier one.  It relies on self-responsibility (which relies in turn on our willingness to grow up). It will also be a far more interesting and engaged than a life lived selfishly or resentfully... Your chances of success soar once you think about kindness as a context for all your other attitudes and actions, as the driving force of your existence and not as something you hoard or offer only when it's time to be impressive.
Inspiring stuff indeed.

A VOYAGE TO AUSTRALIA: PRIVATE JOURNAL OF JAMES BELL

DEAD MEN'S SILVER: THE STORY OF AUSTRALIA'S GREATEST SHIPWRECK HUNTER by HUGH EDWARDS

You get some absolute crackers of books at this time of year -  A Voyage to Australia being one of them.
James Bell, aged 21 in 1838, took six months to get to Australia on The Planter. Along the way, he witnessed the loss of crew and livestock, drunken brawls, an orgy or two and a good deal more. His diary languished unknown for 150 years before surfacing recently and here it is now, in a lovely hardback edition with a great dust jacket and end papers, at a ridiculously low price.
Bells are jingling!

Edwards says: ′A man may be considered lucky to be associated with one treasure in a lifetime. I have been fortunate enough to have been involved with four treasure ships with perhaps another one to go. Somewhere behind an Abrolhos reef off the WA coast are three tons of silver coin in iron-bound chests. Fingers crossed there!′
Sixty years of diving adventures, through starkly contrasting locations and extraordinary advances in technology, Edwards took his boyhood dreams and turned himself into a master treasure hunter, culminating with being the "primary finder" of the Batavia.
What a life Edwards has had! This book is mandatory reading for anyone with a sense of adventure.
