MIND YOUR LANGUAGE
We've reached the point in the year when there's such an abundance of great books to choose from it can become dizzying... in the end, the books that stand my test (if you haven't got me in the first seventy pages, chances are, you are not going to) succeed because of one thing: language. The ability to make something not only live on the page but leap out at me, is the gift of arranging words in magical configurations that tickle my brain into saying 'ok, this one's a keeper, I'm hooked, let's see where this takes us'.

Click here for details or to order I'm not a snob about language: I like it blunt, racy, robust, earthy, as much as I like language that is lyrical and poetic. On some days I like it to be energetic, on others languid. I just want to know the writer has distinctive dexterity. The books I've chosen this month demonstrate that singular ability whether they are telling you how to forage for seaweed or what it's like to be a famous American bank-robbing gangster. Some of the words might be common to both, but the algorithms of imagination make them into totally different, unique creations.

That's the endless fascination of language, and its infinite powers of seduction. I hope you'll find something here that works its spell on you.

When it comes to language, there are few writers in this country who use it with such surgical precision and skill. Clipped, spare prose  like hers is deceptive: so unvarnished you think anyone could do it, until you try. All the bells and whistles we use to add colour to our sentences, all those adjectives and adverbs we cling to for comfort, she strips away, reducing everything to its bare human essence. There's a forensic rigour to her writing, a ruthless self-imposed  honesty that can make you wince. If you haven't read any Garner, now is a good time to get to know this unique voice. If you are familiar with her work, why not revisit it or pick out a title you always meant to read but never got round to or introduce a friend, sister, or daughter to her. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the birthday of a modest woman who prefers to stay under the radar.

by Judith Lucy

Caroline Baum: I wasn't sure whether Judith Lucy's deadpan drollery would work as well on the page as it does in her stand up shows and TV series. But the good news is it does. She had me giggling helplessly in chapter one, and it doesn't let up.

She doesn't spare herself. In fact she lays herself bare in all her drunken mess as she stumbles and staggers her way towards spiritual enlightenment. Intoxicated, needy, confused, vulnerable and endowed with a heightened sense of absurdity which just about rescues her from toppling over the edge, she is raw in her revelations without it ever feeling ickily self-indulgent as it would if she were some gushy over-sharing US soapie star .

You don't have to be on a search for meaning or interested in religious belief to find this highly entertaining -  sceptics and heathens included.

by Di Morrissey

Family and conscience. Money and marriage. The Golden Land is a story built upon classic themes in a modern Australian dimension. It powerfully brings together tragedy and trauma on both public and personal scales.

Di Morrissey skilfully explores the little known, troubled history of Burma through a contemporary story of an ordinary Australian family facing all too recognisable hardships.

The Golden Land contrasts the truth about Burma against some truths about our own golden land, Australia. Di Morrissey's superb sense of setting and the connection with the characters rings true in every scene, showing the integrity, strength and complexity of her writing.

The historic and present day connections between Burma and Australia are gently woven throughout the plot with the settings mixing the exotic with the contemporary.

Natalie is a truly sympathetic heroine; sometimes naïve, but always strong and loving, a devoted young mother forced to make tough decisions. Natalie's journey, both physically and emotionally, changes her outlook on life, and it is a journey readers will be glad to share.

Natalie is a young Gold Coast mother with a loving husband, two small children and a happy lifestyle. While helping her mother move house, she finds a little box containing a Burmese artefact. When Natalie learns its unique history through a letter left by her great-great uncle, it ignites an interest in its country of origin and her uncle's unfulfilled plans for this curio.

Her investigations collide with her own dramatically changing circumstances and create a catalyst for a moral dilemma that challenges the core of her marriage as she finds herself immersed in two very different golden lands.

But Jack Spayd is offered a ticket out in the form of a Hohner harmonica, won by his brutal drunken father in a late-night card game. Jack makes music as a way of escaping his surroundings, and his talent leads him to a jazz club and, eventually, to the jazz piano.

Jack is a virtuoso and hits the road, enchanting audiences in Canada, wartime Europe and Las Vegas, where he is caught up in the world of elite poker and falls under the spell of his boss, the enigmatic.

Bridgett Fuller. Vegas is a hard town ruled by the Mafia, but Jack prospers, until his luck turns bad and he falls foul of the Mob. Forced to run for his life from Vegas, he must also leave the woman he adores. His adventuring takes him to the far reaches of Africa, to a rare and valuable bird that may seal his fate - and to the love of a very different woman.

by Kyle Sandilands

The most hated man in Australia.
And the most popular radio host in the country.
Love him or hate him, there is only one Kyle Sandilands.

This is the book Kyle's fans have been waiting for, straight from the man himself. From his difficult childhood in Brisbane, through to his steely determination to succeed in radio and the successes and disasters he's experienced along the way, Kyle tells his full life story with disarming honesty.

The King of Controversy also spills the beans on the various on-air "incidents" that he has become notorious for - taking the blame when it's deserved (which is often) and giving us the sometimes surprising real stories behind the multitudinous "Vile Kyle" headlines.

Along the way Kyle shoots straight from the saddle on everything from celebrity gossip and his famous co-host Jackie O, to his failed marriage to pop star Tamara Jaber and allegations of misogyny, as well as giving us an insider's view into the cut-throat breakfast radio.

Funny, frank and very revealing, Kyle's memoirs give us a very different view of one of Australia's best-known and most controversial media figures.

EUREKA: THE UNFINISHED REVOLUTION
by Peter FitzSimons

In 1854, Victorian miners fought a deadly battle under the flag of the Southern Cross at the Eureka Stockade. Though brief and doomed to fail, the battle is legend in both our history and in the Australian mind. Click here for more details or to orderHenry Lawson wrote poems about it, its symbolic flag is still raised, and even the nineteenth-century visitor Mark Twain called it: "a strike for liberty".

Was this rebellion a fledgling nation's first attempt to assert its independence under colonial rule? Or was it merely rabble-rousing by unruly miners determined not to pay their taxes.

In his inimitable style, Peter FitzSimons gets into the hearts and minds of those on the battlefield, and those behind the scenes, bringing to life Australian legends on both sides of the rebellion.

by Ian Rankin

Caroline Baum: Poor old Rebus. Old being the operative word. His generation's methods have been superseded by profilers and the internet and he's feeling his age. He's being investigated by Complaints because he drinks with a crim, and he's languishing on the outer in the Cold Cases unit because management find him so bloody-minded and unorthodox. He has no time for the ambitious sharp-suited types who relish getting their faces on TV at press conferences. Fighting his way on to the team investigating a series of disappearances all linked by their common location he runs into internal hurdles and obstacles with few allies.

Rankin performs a nimble two-step, ramping up the tension within the police force while delaying the  crime narrative, so that the first body does not appear until more than halfway through the novel - but you don't mind the wait because there's so much interesting manoeuvring going on and Rebus' cynical take on his colleagues drips with withering sarcasm. A polished and utterly satisfying experience, whether you're a hardcore fan or a new recruit.

Caroline Baum:
Another narrative that shifts between two time frames, this time a very ancient past on an imagined Scottish island, and  the present in the same spot. With her love of strong female character already well established as the creator of television's McLeod's Daughters, Evans indulges her love of history  in this story of religious conflict between Vikings, Picts and Christians, juxtaposed with the present day's Freya Dane's unanswered questions about her archaeologist father's life. An atmospheric, windswept story that brings the year 800 AD to life in vivid, brutal detail.

The four dead guards didn't concern Mitch Rapp as much as the absence of the man they'd been paid to protect. Joe Rickman wasn't just another foot soldier. For the last eight years Rickman had run the CIA's clandestine operations in Afghanistan. It was a murky job that involved working with virtually every disreputable figure in the Islamic Republic. More than a quarter billion dollars in cash had passed through Rickman's hands during his tenure as the master of black ops and no one with a shred of sense wanted to know the details of how that money had been spent.

At first glance it looks as if Rickman has been kidnapped, but Rapp knows certain things about his old friend that cause him to wonder if something more disturbing isn't afoot. Irene Kennedy, the director of the CIA, has ordered Rapp to find Rickman at all costs. Rapp must navigate the ever-shifting landscape of Afghanistan as the Taliban, Iranians, Pakistanis and Russians all plot to claim their piece of the war torn state.

With Afghanistan crumbling around him, Rapp must be as ruthless as his enemies and as deceitful as people in his own government if he has any hopes of completing his mission.

AUSTRALIAN FICTION
Click here for more details or to order THE SECRET KEEPER
by Kate Morton

Caroline Baum: In the boom years, Australian publishers occasionally sent book reviewers and other media types gifts, but those days are long gone. So I was surprised to receive a red document wallet with my copy of Kate Morton's The Secret Keeper, and wondered how that was meant to induce me to read this 580 page doorstop. Not wishing to sound ungrateful (though I probably do) but isn't a good book gift enough?

Having got that off my chest, I can see why Morton has such a huge following. She's obviously a natural storyteller: The story begins with a compelling opening, in 1961 when sixteen year old Laurel witnesses her mother Dorothy plunge a knife into the chest of a visiting stranger. When we meet Laurel again  in the present day, she is a celebrated actress (think of a lesser version of Helen Mirren) revisiting the family home, where a photograph prompts her to wonder  about her mother's wartime past.

There's a decisive moment of choice and surrender that comes with reading, the turning point when you can feel that a book has decisively got its hooks into you and you have no choice but to yield to its gravitational pull. Morton understands that all too well and knows how to create a web of mystery, romance and drama that makes for the perfect escapist holiday read.

THE CONVERSATION
by David Brooks

Caroline Baum: Set in Trieste, this elegant, refined duet a man and a woman, both dining alone at a restaurant engage in  the kind of conversation that only happens when anonymity creates its own kind of intimacy. She tells him about a problem with a relationship and they begin a tentative dance of discovery through carefully calibrated anecdotes of personal revelation tinged with a tantalising hint of flirtation.

Restrained and refined, this is a cerebral rather than a physical seduction, carefully constructed as an elaborate game around the theme of desire and memory with Trieste serving as a metaphor for the border one chooses to cross when entering the territory of love.

by Caroline Overington

Sisters of Mercy by Caroline Overington is the haunting story of two sisters - one has vanished, the other is behind bars...

Snow Delaney was born a generation and a world away from her sister, Agnes.

Until recently, neither even knew of the other's existence. They came together only for the reading of their father's will - when Snow discovered, to her horror, that she was not the sole beneficiary of his large estate.

Now Snow is in prison and Agnes is missing, disappeared in the eerie red dust that blanketed Sydney from dawn on September 23, 2009.

With no other family left, Snow turns to crime journalist Jack Fawcett, protesting her innocence in a series of defiant letters from prison. Has she been unfairly judged? Or will Jack's own research reveal a story even more shocking than the one Snow wants to tell?

With Sisters of Mercy Caroline Overington once again proves she is one of the most exciting new novelists of recent years.

Caroline Baum: If you want a story with comic wallop, this is it. On his way home Emmy award-winning TV executive (and prize shit) George kills two people. Later in what appears to be a sudden attack of insanity, he murders his wife, having found her sleeping with his brother Harry, an academic struggling to enthuse his faculty and students with his research on the life of Richard Nixon.

Now Harry is the custodian of George's two children and required to attend the psychiatric facility where George is being treated with some fairly unconventional methods.

You can see the potential for the blackest satire here; none of it is subtle, but it mocks contemporary American life with savage, acidulated and relentless wit. This is the toxic family writ large, addictive in its awfulness, pushed to extremes, lacerating in its critique of contemporary values, tempered with occasional tenderness and instances of forgiveness, brilliantly entertaining in its cruelty.

NEW FINNISH GRAMMAR
by Diego Marani

Caroline Baum:  By sheer coincidence, this book too, like The Conversation above, is set in Trieste, a favourite location for writers grappling with ambiguity and identity, given its shifting status: once a jewel in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now belonging to Italy.

One night in September 1943 a wounded sailor is found on the quay in Trieste. His only identification is the name tag on his jacket, but he remembers nothing about his identity or language.

A Finnish doctor teaches him his language and sends him back to Finland in the hope he can find some clues to his former life.

This is a very peculiar, interior and melancholy tale about the nature of identity and how closely bound up it is with language (the author invented his own mock language, Europanto and has even written columns in it for various European newspapers). It is also about alienation, loneliness and belonging and is infused with a damp chilly mood that is  as sombre and brooding  as a northern winter.

Less romantic than The English Patient , it nonetheless invites comparison with that story of a mysterious war time stranger. An uncompromising oddity for those who love to immerse themselves in a poetic European sensibility, to be consumed with a warming shot of vodka or two.

BACK TO BLOOD
by Tom Wolfe

As a police launch speeds across Miami's Biscayne Bay - with officer Nestor Camacho on board - Tom Wolfe is off and running. Into the feverous landscape of the city, he introduces the Cuban mayor, the black police chief, an ambitious young journalist and his Yale-marinated editor; a psychiatrist who specializes in sex addiction and his Latina nurse by day, mistress by night - until lately, the love of Nestor's life; a refined, and oh-so-light-skinned young woman from Haiti and her Creole-spouting, black-gang-banger-stylin' little brother; a billionaire porn addict, crack dealers in the 'hoods, 'de-skilled' conceptual artists at the Miami Art Basel Fair, 'spectators' at the annual Biscayne Bay regatta looking only for that night's orgy, and a nest of shady Russians.

Based on the same sort of detailed, on-scene, high-energy reporting that powered Tom Wolfe's previous bestselling novels, Bonfire of the Vanities and A Man in Full, Black to Blood is another brilliant, spot-on, scrupulous, and often hilarious reckoning with our times.

BIOGRAPHY/MEMOIR
Click here for more details or to order COUNTRY GIRL
by Edna O'Brien

Caroline Baum: At long last, having sworn she never would, Edna O'Brien has written a memoir. It's been worth the wait. O'Brien is a sumptuously evocative writer, and her life has been  richly lived from her early days with the nuns in County Clare to her first taste of the literati in Dublin and her fateful encounter with Ernest Gebler, the darkly brooding German she marries (the episode in which her family try to prevent her from doing so, involving  the police, an abbot, her father and writer JP Donleavy is pure melodrama and hilarity).

On reading the manuscript for her first novel Gebler announces with jealous fury: 'You are a writer and I will never forgive you.' In their bitter divorce, O'Brien fights to keep their two young sons, and launches herself as a single mother into the literary life of London in the sixties, where her glamour is not seen as the  damning impediment it was in Ireland. She is soon a guest at the coolest parties and shocks the babysitter when she returns home one evening with Paul McCartney who sings  to the children.

Although she writes less about her own work than she does about the social whirl, she is hugely entertaining and expansive, passionate and  game for anything; a generous hostess as well as an enthusiastic guest, mother, lover, friend, prolific journalist and novelist. One can only imagine that she is blessed, along with all her other talents, with prodigious stamina, as she never seems to tire. She also managed to be sexually liberated in a repressive culture, but doesn't use the word feminist to describe herself once.

by May Smith

Caroline Baum: You have to love a diarist who refers to Hitler as an old devil. It reduces him to a rather pathetic neighbourhood nuisance.

Twenty-four year old British school teacher May Smith has no literary pretensions. She's just a young woman living in a small English village who keeps a journal of the mundane to-ings and fro-ings of her family and friends as the war creeps into their lives. It intrudes on her social life although it doesn't seem to diminish her aspirations when it comes to her wardrobe - she's always coveting a new hat, or some trimming for a coat or dress while juggling the affections of two very different young men (about whom she can seem rather callous at times.)

An unsentimental, clear-eyed, authentic snapshot of daily life, rich in detail about awful perms, dreadful weather, endless queues, gas mask school drills and sirens disrupting sleep that demonstrates the uncomplaining resilience of ordinary people under duress.

GIVE ME EXCESS OF IT
by Richard Gill

Richard Gill is one of Australia's best-known - and best-loved - musical figures. His career has taken him from a music teacher in Sydney's western suburbs to the Music Director of the Victorian Opera, and along the way an involvement with almost every major opera company and orchestra in Australia. To the general public, he's still perhaps best-known for his role in the ABC's Operatunity Oz, and his appearances on Spicks and Specks.

What truly marks Richard out is his passion and enthusiasm for spreading the joy and benefits of music. He is our greatest musical educator, and his life's work - alongside his other roles - has been pushing the role of music in our education system, as well as the education of those who've gone on to choose music as vocation. He brings music alive, and his knowledge and joy in his subject is as brilliantly effective on a class of primary school student as it is to the cast of a major opera.

Give Me Excess of It
is Richard's memoir, tracing his life from school days to the heights (and lows) of conducting and directing an opera company. It's warm, extremely funny, highly opinionated, occasionally rude (where warranted) and always sublimely full of the love of music.

by Ian Thorpe

Ian Thorpe's achievements in the water are nothing short of phenomenal. He has won a record-holding eleven World Championship titles and ten Commonwealth Games gold medals. He has broken twenty-two world records and won five gold, three silver and one bronze Olympic medals. Having been under the spotlight since he was a young teenager, Thorpe retired from competitive swimming in 2006 because of the intense pressure he felt, but five years later he decided to make a hugely publicised comeback.

Ian is one of the world's most successful sportsmen, but it is the way he has managed his triumphs and his commitment to helping others that have earned him respect and admiration internationally. Thorpe's autobiography follows him all the way from his childhood in Sydney right up to the London Olympics. This is a man who has had highs and lows away from the pool, who has led an extraordinary life of an elite athlete that most of us will never know, who has faced up to his own demons, and who has the courage to come back and stake his claim for the ultimate goal once more.

by Janella Purcell

Caroline Baum: Janella makes some pretty big claims for her healthy eating philosophy -  it will improve everything from your weight loss program to your sex life, help you fight cancer, decrease anxiety and prevent ageing.  But you  don't have to subscribe to a completely hardline wholemeal organic philosophy to find some good ideas in this collection.

The thing I like about this cookbook is its eclectic nature, dipping into  a more diverse  selection of cultures than just the standard Asian and Mediterranean cultures for ingredients and recipes like Lummur, Icelandic pancakes or Fakès, a traditional Greek lentil soup. The cannellini bean, pomegranate and quinoa salad sounds like a pretty, refreshing and healthy winner for summer.  Another plus is that many of the recipes are gluten free.

by Ben Shewry

Caroline Baum: Not all cookbooks are meant to be cooked from. Some are more like exhibition catalogues from great art museums. That's the case with this wondrously beautiful creation, part manifesto, part elegy to the pristine nature of New Zealand,  part memoir of a talented artist whose materials happen to be ingredients rather than pigments.

It's hard not to make this kind of very labour intensive rarified restaurant gastronomy seem precious and pretentious, but the text, full of candour and simplicity, dispels that reservation with its sincerely eloquent down to earth philosophy and appeal to take care of the environment that nourishes us.  You can't buy integrity at even the fanciest providore, but that's really what Ben Shewry's approach is all about.

Uncompromising in every aspect of production, this is a book to treasure as an object and to plunge into as a source of inspiration - not for the recipes but for the values, care and  creativity that  leap off every page. A stunning achievement.

by Belinda Jeffery

Caroline Baum: When it comes to cooking, forget about chatty text or personality chefs, all that matters is can you trust the recipe not to let you down?

Nowhere does that matter more than when you are dealing with the often temperamental ingredients that go into deserts- sugar and chocolate that can burn, eggs that can fail to aerate, butter and flour that refuse to co-operate because your hands are too warm or the day is too moist or the surface you are working on is wrong or your oven is not hot enough. So many variables, so many potential hazards.

Which is why I trust Belinda Jeffery. I know she'll hold my hand through every technique, navigating any perils, until I have not only reached safety but achieved the desired effect of finishing a meal with a sweet flourish. From the simplest fruit assemblies to complex  cakes, I know I can count on Jeffery not to forget a crucial step (my cookbook bugbear), and to share her experience without forgetting that not everyone shares her abilities. A tempting, gorgeous and classic collection.  Tea custards with toffee topping anyone?

by Karl Kruszelnicki

Welcome to the wonderful world of Doctor Karl: where oddities are embraced, facts reign supreme, curiosity is king and brightly coloured shirts are compulsory!

In his brand new book, our much beloved and National Living Treasure Doctor Karl Kruszelnicki applies his trademark straight-talkin'-no-high-falutin' scientific sense to a brand new range of Big Questions that you never knew you even wanted to ask, but now desperately need to know the answers to.

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately forgotten the reason you're there? A solid thought convinced your legs to move, but by the time you reach your destination, you realise the thought has abandoned you en route. No, it's not dementia. It's the doorway.

Impress your friends (and potential dates) by being able to answer such questions as:
  •  Why the sky is blue?
  •  Why is it dark at night?
  • Why does lunacy erupt under a full moon?
  • What's the truth about Spinach and Popeye?

Click here for more details or to order CHAPPELLI: LIFE, LARRIKINS & CRICKET
by Ian Chappell

This wonderful collection of stories showcases all the characters and events from the extraordinary life of an Aussie sporting immortal.

Ian Chappell has plenty of strings to his bow - legendary captain of the Australian cricket team; incisive and forthright sports commentator; fearless negotiator with media magnate Kerry Packer; and slightly less fearless runner with the bulls in Pamplona. To name only a few.

In Chappelli: Life and Larrikins, 'Chappelli' takes us on a relaxed, often hilarious, always fascinating journey through his life in cricket and beyond, featuring encounters with everyone from Shane Warne to Sean Connery, from Bradman to Benaud.

Why did Packer call Ian 'the most difficult bastard on Earth'? What were the gut-wrenching consequences when Ian accused Dennis Lillee of being a medium-pacer? Why was Ian warned about frogs when he ran with the bulls? And why exactly did Doug Walters buy a shirt with six pockets during a tour of Sri Lanka?

WIN A COPY FOR A FRIEND!
Click here for more details or to buy THE PHAIDON ARCHIVE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

Born of the traditions of fine art and printing, graphic design is a form of visual communication that seeks to inform, identify or promote through the combination of word and image. But unlike the written word or a work of art, a graphic design operates exclusively in the context in which it will be seen, and mediates between the wishes of the client and the expectations of the public. Moreover, a graphic work is created for mass reproduction.

Order your copy from Booktopia before 30 November 2012 to go in the draw to win a copy for a friend or colleague (or for yourself, let's be honest here). Be sure to click here to watch the video to get a fuller understanding of this extraordinary product!

The field of graphic design, as we know it today, has its roots in two developments: the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century and the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, both of which contributed to the process of graphic reproduction. Today, trade, commerce, communications and culture continue to feed the need for graphic design, and technological developments - most notably the computer - are constantly broadening its possibilities. Click here for more internal images...Of all the arts, graphic design comes closest to our contemporary daily life, as we interact with graphic design on an almost continuous basis.

Five hundred graphic designs created since the advent of mechanical reproduction, are showcased in this archive - from the Gutenberg Bible and Nuremberg Chronicles of the fifteenth century, to the cutting edge magazines, posters and ephemera of today. It is the authoritative selection of newspapers, magazines, advertisements, typefaces, logos, corporate design, record and CD covers and moving graphics from around the world, which have created a benchmark for excellence and innovation.

Compiled and researched by experts, and illustrated with up to six images per entry, including rarely seen historical and contextual material, The Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design is the ultimate reference guide for the design professional and enthusiast alike. Designed with exceptional production details and rich with information, this book also becomes an object that appeals to the creativity and imagination of the reader.
