BUZZ IN BRIEF
Dear All,

This month there is so much lerv in the air it's surprising there's any oxygen in the atmosphere. Instead it's all taken up with molecules of longing, desire, heartbreak, forgiveness, regret, romance, flirting, sex and every conceivable complication and obstacle you can think of. On land and on sea, even in Antarctica! Just about the only place that's free of romance this month is outer space. Now there's a thought.

He may not be an astronaut but Don Tillman, the genetics professor in The Rosie Project is definitely not on the same planet as his colleagues when it comes to his love life.

How he addresses that makes for a hugely likeable debut reminiscent of the very best Hollywood screwball comedies and should come with a laughter guarantee.

While I like a bit of boy meets girl, boy loses girl... as much as the next person, it's actually other kinds of  love that stole my heart this month. The beautifully calibrated father daughter dance in Ten Things I learned About Love satisfied my liking for lists and treads very tenderly around a dynamic that could so easily have stumbled into sentiment. And then there's dangerous love, love as addiction, captured with clarity in High Sobriety. A (ahem) cocktail of memoir and journalistic investigation into the role of alcohol in Australian life, it manages to be entertaining and important about  an epidemic we all know exists but can't seem to tackle effectively.

So take your pick from this selection and spread the L word, whatever it means to you.

Kind Regards

Caroline Baum

by Graeme Simsion

Caroline Baum: When rights to a debut novel are sold in more than thirty countries, you know a book is generating serious buzz. I am glad to say that this feel-good debut delivers what the hype promises. It's as light as perfectly baked scone, narrowly avoiding saccharine pitfalls, achieving just the right combo of airiness and substance for the perfect rom-com recipe.

From the moment we meet Don Tillman, professor of genetics, it's clear we've got a special case on our hands. He's got that awkward slightly aspergers-ish personality that has become so popular with writers of late. Think of him as the grown up version of the boy in Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Boy in the Night Time. His very set habits include eating lobster on Tuesdays and wearing daggy quick dry clothes to save time.

Don's problem (he tells us in his matter of fact deadpan, literal tone) is that he has never been on a second date. With his mathematical brain, he devises a scientifically researched questionnaire to find the perfect partner. Smokers, drinkers and latecomers need not apply.

Except that Rosie is all of these things and more. So how to explain the attraction he feels for a woman who ticks none of the right boxes but presents Don with a compelling scientific quest of her own to find her biological father that presents him with thrillingly unpredictable scenarios?

Irresistibly charming, genuinely funny and cleverly plotted this is intelligent romance for grown ups whose arteries have not hardened with cynicism.

by Khaled Hosseini

And the Mountains Echoed is a deeply moving new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another and how the choices we make resonate through history. A multi-generational family story revolving around brothers and sisters, it explores the ways in which they love, wound, betray, honour and sacrifice for each other.

With profound wisdom, depth, insight and compassion - and moving from Kabul, to Paris, to San Francisco, to the Greek island of Tinos - Hosseini writes about the bonds that define us and shape our lives, the ways that we help our loved ones in need and how we are often surprised by the people closest to us.

Khaled Hosseini, author of the global bestsellers The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has spent six years writing And the Mountains Echoed, which Bloomsbury editor-in-chief Alexandra Pringle describes as 'a big book in every sense of the word. He has told half a century of history, of a land and a people, through so many different characters, all of whom the reader loves and cares for'.

THE ONE HISTORY BOOK YOU MUST READ THIS YEAR
Click here for more details or to order RETURN OF A KING
by William Dalrymple

Caroline Baum: Could there be a more timely and topical history than this five hundred page doorstop this year? I doubt it.  Bringing his trademark combination of scholarship and lively prose to the vexed question of the first British conflict in Afghanistan, the contemporary parallels are all too clear. Westerners have failed to grasp the terrain and the tribal loyalties of this endlessly contested place to their great cost. The Afghans, resilient and canny, shrug off every assault as if were a tiresome gnat.

Six years in the writing, what makes Dalrymple's approach unique is that he has gained unprecedented access to archives in the form of diaries, letters and other documents from the Afghan side of the entanglement, together with Mughal Indian and Russian Tsarist sources, creating a richly entertaining and gripping tapestry of intrigue, strategy and counter move in what was to become known by the British as the Great Game.

Dalrymple brings into the light warriors and warlords whose names we do not know, but whose deeds remain vivid in the collective memory of the Afghanis. To attempt to conquer a country without knowing its stories, suggests Dalrymple, is to be condemned to failure.

Demanding and dense, Dalrymple takes no shortcuts. But though the narrative sometimes threatens getting bogged down in detail, who can resist such anecdotes as that of Ahmad Shah, widely considered the founder of the modern state of Afhanistan in 1747, who when  his nose was eaten away by leprosy or possibly cancer, simply replaced it with a diamond studded substitute?

Caroline Baum: When two old friends, Bernie (female) and Jack meet many years after a student fling, things get hot and heavy pretty quickly, even though he's married. After the affair ends badly, Bernie seeks refuge in Jack's brothers arms - a move that you know will only make things worse. Later, she consoles herself in casual and increasingly deviant and dangerous sex. An explicit but un-erotic story about the darker side of lust and longing that sheds light on the sordid side of internet dating.

BAY OF FIRES
by Poppy Gee

Caroline Baum: Sarah Avery has returned to her family beach shack on Tasmania's isolated Bay of Fires, battered and bruised by the end of a relationship and having quit her job. So she's nursing problems of her own when the body of a young tourist washes up on the beach, just a year after another young girl went missing. Soon the close knit community   turns in on itself, as prejudices and secrets come to the surface. When Hall Flynn, a Hobart journalist is sent to report on the murder investigation, he finds every local has a theory and a suspect. Meanwhile his attraction to Sarah provides an unsettling distraction.

This impressively atmospheric debut calibrates its suspense to build slowly in a gradual escalation of paranoia and suspicion like the increasingly weighty atmosphere of a menacing storm on the horizon. Throwaway remarks, veiled references, furtive behaviour and clumsy flirtations mount as the community becomes increasingly edgy and claustrophobic. Sarah is a satisfyingly complex character: moody, sharp-tongued, private and fragile, unsure of her femininity, certain only of her competence when it comes to fishing.

Gee has spent many summers with her family at their shack on the Bay of Fires, which helps explain why the detail in this suspenseful story rings true. Her fresh voice has the quality of Tasmanian sea air: bracing and wild.

Caroline Baum: In the early 1930s, three women sail from Norway to Antarctica, two of them willingly and one of them less so. Each has her own complex motives and ambitions. Which of them will lay claim to being the first woman to set foot on the icy continent? Based on extensive historical research and her own voyage, Blackadder constructs three female characters who resemble icebergs in that each reveals only a fraction of her real desires while navigating the social niceties and conventions of shipboard life.

Incidental appearances by other real life women of the era from Marie Stopes to Amelia Earhart are a little contrived, but the era and setting provide plenty of opportunity for frosty exchanges and thawing hearts.

Caroline Baum: Now this is a really good set up: Renn Ivins is a Hollywood actor of stature and charisma. But how do his friends and family see him? This cool, almost forensic novel examines his impact on the lives of everyone in his orbit: his children, girlfriends and ex wives, creating a multifaceted, layered narrative of influence, affluence, ego, vanity, success, envy, the paralysis that comes with privilege, the resentments that tarnish the sheen of success, the disappointments that underscore wasted opportunities. A polished behind the scenes journey into the hollowness of celebrity, the title a reference to the sort of gossipy fodder that masquerades as journalism in the tabloids.

THE SOUND OF THINGS FALLING
by Juan Gabriel Vasquez

Caroline Baum: I can't improve on what UK literary editor Boyd Tonkin said about Vasquez: 'it's as if mature Le Carre had wandered in the narrative labyrinths of Borges'. Suddenly there is a new Colombian writer to get excited about, grappling with the country's turbulent past and breaking with the magical realism tradition (which I adore, don't get me wrong) which has defined writing from the region for so long.
When a young lawyer Antonia Yammara befriends Ricardo Laverde in a Bogota billiard hall, he realises the ex pilot has a secret. But no sooner has their friendship begun than Ricardo is shot dead on a street corner, witnessed by Yammara. Compelled to find out about Ricardo's past, Yammara leaves the city behind and revisits the place and time when drugs first came to define the Colombia we all came to know so well through news reports and movies.

Vasquez opens this gripping psychological thriller with an unlikely image of a hippopotamus in notorious drug dealer Pablo Escobar's  private zoo. It's the kind of unexpected imagery that signals the writer's fresh take on the events that destroyed his country for a generation.

Click here for details or to orderTEN THINGS I'VE LEARNT ABOUT LOVE
by Sarah Butler

Caroline Baum: This is such a tender, poignant book that I feel I should pick it up gently so as not to bruise its already wounded characters.
Alice has come home from months in Mongolia to discover that her father is dying, with only weeks to live. Her two sisters are very much in charge, leaving her feeling helpless and sidelined.
Meanwhile Daniel, a homeless man, walks the streets of London, thinking about what he would like to say to the daughter he has never met. Instead, like a bower bird, he collects little treasures for her, harvested from the litter of the city's streets, leaving them as modest offerings on her doorstep.
There is so much opportunity for mawkish sentimentality here , but Butler avoids every false note and even manages some gentle, perfect pitch humor thanks to  Alice's list-making habit.
It's hard to believe this is Butler's first novel. Every line shines with affection and compassion for her characters as they struggle with loss and regret, loneliness and the true meaning of home.
You might need a tissue.

LOVE IS A CANOE
by Ben Schrank

Caroline Baum: With the abundance of romance themed titles this month, it's refreshing to find a book that stands out from the pack. It's about marriage and  about the clichéd hokeyness of self-help couples' counselling books, but it's also about the pressures of modern day publishing.

When Stella, an ambitious young editor, comes up with a promotional competition in which a couple get to spend the weekend with Peter, the greying author of a republished marriage guidance classic, she has no idea of the consequences of her marketing strategy. Trouble is, the couple in question, the rather attractive Eli and the intensely irritating Emily are navigating a marital shipwreck that  may require more than glib homilies about canoeing to save it from sinking. As for Peter, he has his own relationship 'issues' to resolve.

Everyone in this modern day fable is deeply flawed, despite their obvious intelligence and good intentions. Their lack of emotional insight is endearing and funny and Schrank gently skewers the narcissism and anxieties of middle class America.

HUMAN REMAINS
by Elizabeth Haynes

Caroline Baum: When police analyst Annabel Hayer (a sort of backroom researcher) discovers her neighbour's decomposing body, she is appalled that no one had noticed the woman's absence. She soon discovers a disturbing number of similar cases in which the victims of all ages seem to die of natural causes.

Two things make this crime thriller interesting: firstly, it introduces us to a level of police operations that  has so far remained under the radar, because of its un-glamourous desk job status. But Haynes' description of how  data is collated to extract patterns that can provide valuable clues for detectives comes from her own experience as an analyst and hits just the right note of authenticity without becoming bogged down in pedantic procedural detail.

Secondly, Haynes deploys psychological skill and subtlety in conveying Annabel's sense of personal loneliness and her alienation and isolation at work, where she believes herself to be disliked and excluded. Despite her obvious competence, does her feeling of being unpopular make Annabel vulnerable?

THE BOOKTOPIA BOOK GURU'S PICKS - INTERNATIONAL FICTION
Click here for more details or to order THE UNIVERSE VERSUS ALEX WOODS
by Gavin Extence

BBGuru: This book is a delight. It takes one of the darkest subjects available to a writer, our own mortality and examines it with such grace, intelligence and empathy that we look without flinching. Part The World According to Garp, part Sophie's World this is a book which asks us to venture beyond the safe zone but holds our hand and comforts us as we go.

The Universe Versus Alex Woods is suitable for your thoughtful teen, your lively grandparents and everyone in between. It deserves the kind of success enjoyed by The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

Blurb: A tale of an unexpected friendship, an unlikely hero and an improbable journey, Alex's story treads the fine line between light and dark, laughter and tears. And it might just strike you as one of the funniest, most heartbreaking novels you've ever read.

Alex Woods knows that he hasn't had the most conventional start in life.

He knows that growing up with a clairvoyant single mother won't endear him to the local bullies.

He also knows that even the most improbable events can happen - he's got the scars to prove it.

What he doesn't know yet is that when he meets ill-tempered, reclusive widower Mr Peterson, he'll make an unlikely friend. Someone who tells him that you only get one shot at life. That you have to make the best possible choices.

So when, aged seventeen, Alex is stopped at Dover customs with 113 grams of marijuana, an urn full of ashes on the passenger seat, and an entire nation in uproar, he's fairly sure he's done the right thing . . .

BETWEEN FRIENDS
by Amos Oz

BBGuru: Simple, direct and strangely affecting, Between Friends sneaks up on the reader and holds us tightly, demanding we stay quiet and watch. Amos Oz leads us into a world many of us will never know. Read in one or two sittings this collection of inter-linked short stories reads like a novel whose central character is an ideal. The use of short stories to tell the tales of individuals living in a community is reminiscent of Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and, closer to home, Olga Masters' A Long Time Dying. A great Sunday afternoon read.

Blurb: 'On the kibbutz it's hard to know. We're all supposed to be friends but very few really are.'

Amos Oz's compelling new fiction offers revelatory glimpses into the secrets and frustrations of the human heart, played out by a community of misfits united by political disagreement, intense dissatisfaction and lifetimes of words left unspoken.

Ariella, unhappy in love, confides in the woman whose husband she stole; Nahum, a devoted father, can't find the words to challenge his daughter's promiscuous lover; the old idealists deplore the apathy of the young, while the young are so used to kibbutz life that they can't work out if they're impassioned or indifferent. Arguments about war, government, travel and children are feverishly taken up and quickly abandoned u and amid this group of people unwilling and unable to say what they mean, Martin attempts to teach Esperanto.

At the heart of each drama is a desire to be better, more principled and worthy of the community's respect. With his trademark compassion and sharp-eyed wit, Amos Oz leaves us with the feeling that what matters most between friends is the invisible tie of our shared humanity.

AUSTRALIAN STORIES

by Jill Stark

Caroline Baum: A binge drinking health reporter. Yep, you read that right. During the week Jill Stark writes about Australia's alcohol soaked culture and at the weekend she writes herself off.

But Stark has a formidable constitution , allowing her to function professionally and party hard  without major mishap. She also turns out to have a pretty strong will. So when she decides to go on the wagon, she  throws herself into it wholeheartedly: from dating to the footy, stone cold sober. The reaction from friends and colleagues is illuminating.

In this frank memoir, Stark broadens the canvas from her own personal challenge and demons to an examination of Australia's complex love affair with drink, paying particular attention to the recent alcopop debate. Entertaining, thought-provoking and unafraid to stare straight into the the ugly face of intoxicated Australia, this is an important book that should trigger the public conversation we need to have about the impact of alcohol on who we are.

LOVE WITH A CHANCE OF DROWNING
by Torre Deroche

Caroline Baum: A feel-the-fear-and-do-it-anyway memoir: Torre de Roche is an urbanite with a longstanding fear of deep water. So of course when she falls in love over cocktails with a sailor called Ivan and he asks her to join him on his modest yacht to sail across the Pacific, she agrees despite not knowing a tiller from a poop deck.

What follows is an often funny, often scary epic documenting every mooring, every mishap ( the mildew episode is particularly striking), every storm and every sunset in an unlikely and very confined romance.

Anne H. Putnam

Caroline Baum: Obesity is the hot topic for 2013. Last month kicked off the trend with Big Ray. In a few months time there's  Big Brother, Lionel Shriver's no doubt astringent take  on the subject to look forward to.

This month it's this oh-so appropriately titled memoir. After agonising throughout her teens about her weight, Anne Putnam has gastric band surgery at the age of seventeen (at the same time as her dad, though they don't get a job lot discount). The operation does not sound pleasant.

Nine years later, she realises that although she may have changed her shape, she has not changed her attitude to her body. She's still obsessing  about  being a normal size, whatever that means.

To be honest, this book frustrated me no end: in all the author's anguish, there was no mention of her endocrine system and of whether she ever consulted anyone about hormone imbalance or glandular conditions, nor did she seem to consider going to talk to a therapist about her body image problem and her obsessively self absorbed pre-occupation. I wanted to shout at her 'try thinking about world poverty or about someone who has needs greater than your own' but I doubt she'd have heard.

At the same time, Putnam writes with a fluent and almost embarrassing degree of naked candour about personal humiliations, rejections, crushes and adolescent fumblings that many readers will relate to.

MADNESS
by Kate Richards

Madness is a real world for the many thousands of people who are right now living within it. It never apologises. Sometimes it is a shadow, ever present, without regard for the sun. Sometimes it is a well of dark water with no bottom, or a levitation device to the stars.

Madness, a memoir is an insight into what it's like to live with psychosis over a period of ten years, in which bouts of acute illness are interspersed with periods of sanity. The world is beautiful and terrifying and sometimes magical. The sanctity of life is at times precious and at times precarious and always fragile. It's a story of learning to manage illness with courage and creativity, of achieving balance and living well. It is for everyone now living within the world of madness, for everyone touched by this world, and for everyone seeking to further his or her understanding of it, whether you think of madness as a biological illness of the brain or an understandable part of the continuum of the human condition.

Kate Richards is a trained doctor currently working in medical research.

Click here for more details or to order WHAT'S YOUR DOG TEACHING YOU?
by Martin McKenna

Martin McKenna, the Dog Man, has learned plenty from the dogs he grew up with and from the dogs he now owns. He firmly believes that dogs hold the key to human happiness and well being and that they can help us to be better people - if we only learned how to learn from them.
Over the years he has counselled countless people in doggy lore, in how to be more relaxed, more confident, less aggressive, more loyal, how to make the most out of life, how to use routine to clear your head - and many other useful modes of behaviour. In this book he runs through the many lessons dogs can teach us, via colourful anecdotes about hounds and their owners.

Be warned! Not everyone is up to the task of learning from their dog.

by Joyce Dunbar

BBGuru: Great for all ages. This book give us the cat in all its glory. Sure to be a much treasured book. The perfect gift.

Blurb:
Good puss or bad cat?
Jekyll or Hyde?
One and the same?
Who decides?

Puss Jekyll is the soft cuddly cat of the house grooming her fur, but at night she becomes Cat Hyde, hunting mice, all fang and claw. Sleeping in a cosy spot or prowling in the moonlight, lapping milk from a bowl or stalking a defenceless trembling vole, playing with a ball of wool or savaging her prey, graceful and aristocratic or ruthless street fighter, can this really be the same creature?

The beautifully evocative rhytmic and rhyming text is accompanied by luminous coloured-pencil and watercolour drawings that make the reader want to reach out and feel the fur.

This treat for cat-lovers of all ages.

Book two of a high-octane thriller series. Dom has five more Herculean tasks to perform...or lose a pound of flesh. In this instalment Dom has to turn the power off during Earth Hour--for the entire Gold Coast.

Once upon a time, and not so long ago, I didn't have to do this stuff: feign complete surprise, tell endless lies. But now, ever since The Debt, it seems like that's all I do.

With Tristan in hospital and Imogen increasingly suspicious of Dom's behaviour, Dom has had it with The Debt. But this mysterious organisation hasn't finished with Dom. No matter how hard he runs, The Debt is not far behind.
Then he gets the next instalment, and it's even harder than the first. Dom must turn off all of the Gold Coast's lights during Earth Hour. But Dom is learning quickly. He has the ClamTop and a few tricks of his own, and starts plotting how to get into Diabolo Bay Power Station.

Dom's not been tested in this way before, but his brush with The Debt has given this task an urgency he's not faced before. And he's starting to realise that this organisation means business. He's not just racing against time, he's racing for his life.

by Yelena Black

BBGuru: This has the potential to be the book in young adult fiction this year.

Blurb: Dark forces are unleashed by the intense passion of one young ballet dancer in a dark, seductive and highly dramatic thriller.

Dancing with someone is an act of trust. Elegant and intimate; you're close enough to kiss, close enough to feel your partner's heartbeat. But for Vanessa, dance is deadly - and she must be very careful who she trusts... Vanessa Adler isn't so sure she really belongs at the School of American Ballet. But dance runs in her family.

It's been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. Her grandmother and mother were prima ballerinas, and her older sister Margaret was, too. That is, until Margaret mysteriously disappeared from school three years ago. Vanessa is heir to the family's gift and the only person who can fulfil her sister's destiny. She has no choice. But she never could have guessed how dangerous the school is. The infamous choreographer, Josef, isn't just ruthless with his pupils, he guards a sinister secret, one in which the school's dancers - prized for their beauty, grace, and discipline - become pawns in a world of darkness.

When Josef asks Vanessa to dance the lead in the Firebird, she has little idea of the danger that lies ahead-and the burning forces about to be unleashed...
