BUZZ IN BRIEF
It's not deliberate, but this month belongs, with one exception, to women.

Women from Africa, America, Germany and our own backyard, telling stories that are sometimes shocking in their rawness and candour, sometimes so achingly tender and intimate that you feel you are intruding just by reading them, as if you were peering nosily into the characters' innermost selves.

Women writing about women and why it's time to sit at the table; women writing about men: men they have loved, men they have lost, men they live with, men they give birth to, men who make war, men who make a cup of tea. In voices that are strong, indignant, elegiac, sharp, passionate, angry and mournful. Oh, and there are also a couple of men who liked to dress as women for good measure.

Never has our shared humanity been more explored, with books that come to us from cultures we may never  get the opportunity to visit or know in other ways. So travel into these stories to share what you recognise and explore what is unfamiliar. You are in good hands.

Kind Regards

Caroline Baum

BOOK OF THE MONTH

by Ashley Hay

Caroline Baum: It's 1948. When her husband Mac is killed at work on the railway line between Sydney and the small NSW coastal settlement of Thirroul, Anikka Lachlan gets no adequate explanation of the incident but has no time for self-pity. She has a spirited daughter Isabel to raise and must find a way of earning a living.  So she becomes the local librarian at the Railway Institute.

Instead of life shutting down, it opens up to her gently, thanks to the friendship of neighbours and the tight knit community's acknowledgment of her resilience and dignity. There's the shy poet Roy McKinnon, who is finding it difficult to return to normality after the war but who comes to borrow books. And there's the more abrasive Frank Draper, haunted by his own failures as a doctor to care for those who have survived. While aching with her private loss and remembering Mac's courtship, Annika senses that  the living need rescuing from loneliness and loss. In a memorably effective scene in which Annika hosts Christmas lunch for her friends, Hay displays masterly control and lack of sentiment while creating a genuinely heartwarming gathering.

Her carefully calibrated restraint only serves to heighten the story's emotional impact played out against the dramatic backdrop of the Illawarra escarpment and its rugged coastline. The beautifully structured narrative is enhanced by Hay's measured and nuanced prose, demonstrating that just because people are quiet and modest in their behaviour does not mean they do not feel things deeply and passionately. An intensely satisfying story with deep emotional resonance that shines with compassion and tender understanding of the human heart.

SUPREMELY SATISFYING READ
Click here for more details or to order THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS
by Claire Messud

Caroline Baum: There is something so bracing about a good rant, something so satisfying about anger on the page but it is rare for a writer to be able to pull it off with sustained heat and panache. In her fourth novel, American writer Claire Messud really lets fly in the scorching narrator's voice of Nora, a woman soured into disappointment by her mid life infatuation with a family.

Unmarried and childless, Nora is reassessing where her potential and aspirations evaporated, leaving her  to cling only to her status as the most popular teacher at an elementary school. She is bitter, lonely and at odds with the world when the Shahids seduce her with their exotic cosmopolitanism.

Sirena, in particular, captivates her. An artist, she takes her work seriously. Is it too late for Nora to do the same? Will their friendship revive her own ambitions? Sharply observed, with psychologically astute insights into the nature of friendship, envy and creativity, this is a supremely satisfying read about art and relationships full of uncomfortable squirming truths by a writer who is unafraid of the darker side of human nature.

CONFRONTING
Click here for more details or to order WRECKED
by Charlotte Roche

Caroline Baum: Just as the author's debut Wetlands did, Wrecked is designed to shock: a flamboyantly X rated sexually graphic account of damaged goods gone feral within a twenty first century marriage where pornography, therapy and money signal extreme neurosis and psychological collapse.

Based closely on the author's own experience of a horrific accident on the way to her wedding which destroyed all hope of normality, this is an abrasively confronting, deliberately repellent and disturbing book, defiant, ugly and savage. Strictly for readers who enjoy voyeuristic perversity and scatological detail.

BLAIN'S BEST WORK BY FAR
Click here for more details or to order THE SECRET LIVES OF MEN
by Georgia Blain

Caroline Baum: Great title, isn't it? Gets you in straight away.

Georgia Blain has always been one of those unshowy writers that people often describe as 'quiet'. Her material is everyday, sometimes even banal. But she gets to the heart of the matter in this collection of stories that drills into the interior lives of people you feel you know: disappointment, regret, tentative connection, turning points, defining moments are all explored with understated sensitivity.

This is Blain's best work by far, mature and modest. It reminded me of the short stories of Helen Garner and Cate Kennedy in the way it honours unremarkable lives and daily gestures.

Click here for more details or to order AMERICANAH
by Chimamands Ngozi Adiche

Caroline Baum: Chimananda Ngozi Adichie demonstrates why she deserves her reputation as one of the world's most exciting talents with this sprawling yet intimate portrait of the contemporary Nigerian diaspora. Following two teenage sweethearts Ifemelu and Obinze who have left their country for the opportunities of the US and Britain, Adichie captures their acute sense of displacement, cultural disorientation and loneliness as they make their way in strange worlds.

She clearly loves her characters and that love becomes infectious watching these two brave souls navigate their way back to their country and to each other. At times funny, at times poignant, Americanah documents their progress and missteps with sensitivity, tenderness, humour and telling details (decoding  the whole business of braided hair for example, in a way that is very reminiscent of Zadie Smith)

Adichie observes behaviour attitudes and language like an anthropologist to make important but subtle points about race and identity but is never-heavy handed. Her characters breathe and connect with complete believability and she makes us see the world through their eyes as only the best writers can.

A COMPLEX AND DIFFICULT PERSONALITY
Click here for more details or to order MADELEINE
by Helen Trinca

Caroline Baum: In 1997 Madeleine St John became the first Australian female author to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She didn't win, but the media attention she got at the time introduced her to a new readership. Her body of work is slim and perhaps dismissed by some as slight with its Anglophile middle class preoccupations.

Trinca's biography documents St John's troubled childhood following her mother's suicide and her lifelong hostility towards her father, her unhappy love life, her peculiarly brittle snobbishness and antipathy towards Australia and her fragile friendships. St John comes across as a complex and difficult  personality filled with contradictory impulses and frustrations, at times thoroughly unpleasant and rude to those who cared for her.

St John's The Women in Black, about the life of a shop floor assistant in a department store is admired by fans like Clive James and Bruce Beresford, who long hoped to turn it into a film. But her Booker nomination The Essence of the Thing has slipped back into obscurity. Neither commercially successful nor a literary pioneer, St John is perhaps a surprising subject for a biography but well served by Trinca's sympathetic treatment.

PASSION AND NOBILITY
Click here for more details or to order WAGING PEACE
by Anne Deveson

Caroline Baum: One of our most distinguished activists and humanitarians, as well as an award-winning journalist,  Deveson combines memoir with essay in this very personal hybrid.

Her account of her wartime childhood is well evoked in a series of vivid anecdotes. She then launches into a more discursive examination of the impulse to make war and articulates a heartfelt plea for a greater commitment to peace efforts.

An incurable optimist who has never allowed her hope be corroded by cynicism, Deveson brings passion and nobility to her cause.

WILL RING TRUE FOR MANY
Click here for more details or to order LEAN IN
by Sheryl Sandberg

Caroline Baum: This book has already had so much media attention and been so anticipated there's little left to say. Some critics have derided Sandberg as being as out of touch with reality in the advice she dispenses as Gwyneth Paltrow in her new get-healthy cookbook It's All Good, but I think that judgement is a little harsh. Both women seem to me to be well-intentioned and trying to make up for their enormous sense of privilege.

The CEO of Facebook coined the phrase Lean In as a manifesto for women to engage more and step up to management and leadership roles and the phrase has now gathered enormous traction in the media and  become the cornerstone of a movement.

Sandberg has an appealing delivery and is refreshingly personal about her own stumbles, assumptions and mistakes on the way to the top. Sure, she's now wealthy and successful beyond imagining and can afford all the best help in the world, but at least she's sensitive enough to notice how hard it can be for others, how early women sabotage themselves and to offer practical suggestions on how to redress the situation and modify behaviour .

Her use of the phrase 'relentlessly pleasant' to describe the manner that women must adopt in order not to threaten men as they climb the ladder will ring true for many. She also has some interesting things to say about mentoring, promotion opportunities and receiving criticism.

Caroline Baum: Three stories, three secrets, three marriages.

In a coastal village in Ireland in 1969, a Russian painter and his novelist wife write to one another as they come to terms with a fatal illness.

On Australia's West coast in 2011, a bookseller writes to her gay partner  trying to  understand what happened to their relationship.

In England in 1948, a returned English doctor writes to the love of his life, a German artist he lived with in Vienna in 1938.

Three couples navigating everything from domesticity to war, exploring intimacy and how to make sense of an ending. I don't  know if anyone does write letters like these now, or then, but this is an impressive  debut, a sustained elegy to love lost.

VICTORIAN PEEPSHOW

Caroline Baum: Fancy a bit of Victorian peepshow?

Well here's a juicy bit of scandal that set British tongues wagging. It's the true story of Miss Fanny Park and Miss Stella Boulton who turn out not to be women at all but young men who like to dress as women. Arrested and subjected to a sensational show trial in London in 1870, their story involves peers, politicians and prostitutes, exposing the underbelly of nineteenth century London.

Meticulously researched from trial transcripts and contemporary newspaper reports, this is an entertaining and sometimes salacious courtroom drama.

Caroline Baum: Jim, a fighter pilot, crashes his plane on the edge of London at the height of the Blitz. Iris, a young woman on fire-watching duties, stands on a Bloomsbury rooftop in the company of renowned poet T.S Eliot observing the night skies for enemy planes.

When Jim and Iris meet, they fall in love quickly though he is still troubled by what we would now call Post Traumatic Stress. Can they make a life together? And what role will Mr Eliot play in their relationship? (Interestingly, this is the second time that Caroll has brought TS Eliot into his fiction - he did it first in The Lost Life)

This deceptively simple story owes its power to Carroll's lyrical prose style. It's slow, unhurried and very much about interior lives.

FROM THE AUTHOR OF OLD FILTH
Click here for more details or to order LAST FRIENDS
by Jane Gardam

Caroline Baum: This is the last in the Old Filth (Sir Edward Feathers, a Hong Kong QC) trilogy - a very British series of books that examines the professional rivalry and friendship of legal sparring partners.

I haven't read the first two, so the tone of this one took a while to settle into together with working out who the characters are and what their past history is. But once you get past that, this is a poignant, bittersweet and often very touching comedy of manners and class, with moments verging on farce.

It is a little bit too self conscious in its choreography and is very much about a disappeared generation of colonial types, so it may have limited appeal and readership amongst Anglophiles of a certain age, but the writing has some moments of sparkling wit and surprising tenderness.

Berlin, 1933. Warning bells ring across Europe as Hitler comes to power. Clara Vine, an attractive young Anglo-German actress, arrives in Berlin to find work at the famous Ufa studios. Through a chance meeting, she is unwillingly drawn into a circle of Nazi wives, among them Magda Goebbels, Anneliese von Ribbentrop and Goering's girlfriend Emmy Sonnemann. As part of his plan to create a new pure German race, Hitler wants to make sweeping changes to the lives of women, starting with the formation of a Reich Fashion Bureau, instructing women on what to wear and how to behave. Clara is invited to model the dowdy, unflattering clothes.

Then she meets Leo Quinn who is working for British intelligence and who sees in Clara the perfect recruit to spy on her new elite friends, using her acting skills to win their confidence. But when Magda Goebbels reveals to Clara a dramatic secret and entrusts her with an extraordinary mission, Clara feels threatened, compromised, desperately caught between her duty towards - and growing affection for - Leo, and the impossibly dangerous task Magda has forced upon her.

By Kate Forsyth

John Purcell: This book captivated me from the very first scene. An historical novel with a lot of heart which will appeal to lovers of Austen and the Brontes as well as those in love with Kate Morton and Philippa Gregory. Makes a great gift.

Blurb: One of the great untold love stories - how the Grimm brothers discovered their famous fairy tales - filled with drama and passion, and taking place during the Napoleonic Wars.

The Wild Girl tells the story of Dortchen Wild. Growing up next door to the Grimm brothers in Hesse-Cassel, a small German kingdom, Dortchen told Wilhelm some of the most powerful and compelling stories in the famous fairytale collection.

Dortchen first met the Grimm brothers in 1805, Click here for details or to order when she was twelve. One of six sisters, Dortchen lived in the medieval quarter of Cassel, a town famous for its grand royal palace, its colossal statue of Herkules, and a fairytale castle of turrets and spires built as a love nest for the Prince-Elector's mistress. Dortchen was the same age as Lotte Grimm, the only girl in the Grimm family, and the two became best friends.

In 1806, Hesse-Cassel was invaded by the French. Napoleon created a new Kingdom of Westphalia, under the rule of his dissolute young brother Jérôme. The Grimm brothers began collecting fairytales that year, wanting to save the old stories told in spinning-circles and by the fire from the domination of French culture. Dortchen was the source of many of the tales in the Grimm brother's first collection of fairy tales, which was published in 1812, the year of Napoleon's disastrous march on Russia.

Dortchen's own father was cruel and autocratic, and he beat and abused her. He frowned on the friendship between his daughters and the poverty-stricken Grimm Brothers. Dortchen had to meet Wilhelm in secret to tell him her stories. All the other sisters married and moved away, but Dortchen had to stay home and care for her sick parents. Even after the death of her father, Dortchen and Wilhelm could not marry - the Grimm brothers were so poor they were surviving on a single meal a day.

After the overthrow of Napoleon and the eventual success of the fairytale collection, Dortchen and Wilhelm were at last able to marry. They lived happily ever after with Wilhelm's elder brother Jakob for the rest of their lives.

by Christina Stead

John Purcell: This is one of the most lively, energetic and thought provoking books I have ever read. Forget all you may know about Christina Stead. This book is unlike anything else she wrote. When I finished it the first time I started reading it again straight away. A work of genius.

Blurb: This Christina Stead masterpiece is a novel for our times. Set in the uneasy period between the wars, the story details the high world of finance and the intrigues in a merchant bank that ultimately collapses. Introduction by Alan Kohler.

House of All Nations is Christina Stead's 1938 gripping portrayal of financial world success. Set in an exclusive European bank in the heady days of the early thirties, Stead weaves a remarkable tale of greedy, devious and shady characters, all brought together by their love of money. The director of the bank, Jules Bertillon, leads these gamblers, crooks and prospectors on a treacherous journey navigating political and natural disasters, and using both to his advantage.

House of All Nations has never been more relevant, as Stead's remarkable work speaks loudly about the modern markets.

'You put together two things that have not been put together before. And the world is changed...'

Julian Barnes's new book is about ballooning, photography, love and grief; about putting two things, and two people, together, and about tearing them apart. One of the judges who awarded him the 2011 Man Booker Prize described him as 'an unparalleled magus of the heart'. This book confirms that opinion.

Click here for more details or to order PATISSERIE : MASTERING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF FRENCH PASTRY - 3,200 STEP-BY-STEP PHOTOS
by Christopher Felder

All the classic French pastries made accessible for the home cook, with 3,200 photographs. For every serious home baker, French pastry represents the ultimate achievement. But to master the techniques, a written recipe can take you only so far--what is equally important is to see a professional in action, to learn the nuances of rolling out dough for croissaints or caramelizing apples for a tarte tatin.

For each of the 210 recipes here, there are photographs that lead the reader through every step of the instructions. There has never been such a comprehensive primer on patisserie. The important base components--such as creme patisserie, pate a choux, and chocolate ganache--are presented as stand-alone recipes. Once comfortable with these, the home baker can go on to tackle the famous and more complex creations--such as Eclairs, Saint-Honore, Opera--as well as feel empowered to explore new and original combinations.

An entire chapter is devoted to decoration as well as sauces, syrups, and fillings. Whether used to develop skills or to refine techniques, to gain or simply broaden a repertoire, Patisserie dispels the mystery around classic French pastries, so that everyone can make them at home.

HISTORY
DESERTER
by Charles Glass

SERVANTS
by Lucy Lethbridge

During the Second World War, the British lost 100,000 troops to desertion, and the Americans 40,000. Commonwealth forces from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Britain′s colonial empire also left the ranks in their thousands. The overwhelming majority of deserters from all armies were front-line infantry troops; without them, the war was harder to win. Many of these men were captured and court marshalled, while others were never apprehended. Some remain wanted to this day. Why did these men decide to flee their ranks?

In DESERTER veteran reporter and historian Charles Glass follows a group of British and American deserters into the heat of battle and explores what motivated them to take their fateful decision to run away. The result is a highly emotional and engaging study of an under-explored area of World War II history.

An original look at the social history of the twentieth century, brilliantly retold through the eyes of the household servants.

Servants is the social history of the last century through the eyes of those who served. From the butler, the footman, the maid and the cook of 1900 to the au pairs, cleaners and childminders who took their place seventy years later, a previously unheard class offers a fresh perspective on a dramatic century. Here, the voices of servants and domestic staff, largely ignored by history, are at last brought to life: their daily household routines, attitudes towards their employers, and to each other, throw into sharp and intimate relief the period of feverish social change through which they lived.

Sweeping in its scope, extensively researched and brilliantly observed, Servants is an original and fascinating portrait of twentieth-century Britain; an authoritative history that will change and challenge the way we look at society.
