Booktopia SF & Fantasy Buzz
October 2013 | Edition 9
Welcome to the October Science-Fiction & Fantasy Buzz
At last, at last! The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch is here at last! Well, not quite yet - but this October it will be published and it is awesome. It's now one of my top three fave books of 2013!

It's with a resounding cheer that we wish heartfelt congratulations to John Scalzi on his winning of the Hugo Award for Best Novel. We've told you to read Redshirts a couple of times in the Buzz, so if you haven't yet, now is the time.

There is more news on sci-fi television goodness with word that The Expanse, the six-volume space opera series (of which only three have been written and published) by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (aka George R. R. Martin's personal assistant) under the pen-name James S.A. Corey , has been optioned for television. Set in the 22nd Century, The Expanse depicts tensions in a colonised solar system and rumblings of war. Government and corporate conspiracies abound, as does the discovery of alien life.

And now, on with the Buzz.

Kind regards

Mark Timmony

by Scott Lynch

This has to have been one of the books I have been most excited to get my hands on this year. Fans around the world have been patiently waiting for the next instalment of Locke and Jean's adventures. From the get-go Lynch established himself, on the strength, flair and originality of his work, as a name that rested quite comfortably in the same echelon as George R. R. Martin.

Lynch has a gift for creating a vibrant, neon-lit world full of epic grandeur and poignant decay. He sweeps the reader across pages of action, intrigue and adventure, teasing the long-con (or in some cases not so long) out of hundreds of pages before the always thrilling and always significant twist that is the grand reveal at the end. He is one of the few writers who mixes an equal amount of swash-buckling adventure with cerebral plotting and character interaction.

Brilliantly picking the plot up from where he left us hanging at the end of Red Seas Under Red Skies , Locke and Jean find that the reach of the Bondsmagi is as long and as encompassing as folk lore would have us believe and their actions in The Lies of Locke Lamora truly come home to roost in this book. As does the often mention but never seen love of Locke's life - the strong, beautiful and razor sharp, Sabetha.

Much like the vaunted alchemists of his world Lynch mixes a cocktail of back story inbetween seat-of-your-pants paced life or death scenarios that leave you breathless in your chair and sleep deprived as you burn the midnight oil to find out 'what happens next!'. And the finale of this tale, while not the cliff-hanger of Red Seas, opens things up in a way you won't see coming, and will not disappoint!

What I've just read: Stealing Light by Gary Gibson is the first novel in The Shoal Sequence, a space opera trilogy which is complete. It's very fast-paced, readable, filled with cool gadgets and tech and is - at times - rather violent. It's really good!

What I am reading: The Obsidian Heart by Mark T. Barnes. Woohoo! I got a reading copy of this one - it's due mid October - and wow. Just wow. Easily as good as book one, maybe even better as you are getting further into the story. I don't know. I can't decide! I am loving this series.

What I'm reading next: The Ragged Man by Tom Lloyd. I finally finished my re-read of the first three books in Lloyd's epic series, now it's time to get into the next chapter. This will not be a re-read, and I am very much looking forward to it.

By Ian C. Esslemont

Ian C. Esslemont, Steve Erikson's co-creator of the Malazan world, continues his own story running parallel to the books Erikson wrote, weaving his own magic while staying true to the creation they both had a hand in birthing. Blood and Bone is dark and gritty, and the site of a major convergence drawing ascendants, mages, warriors, and shape-changers to its pages like flies.

The story takes place around the same time as Erikson's The Crippled God, on the island of Jacuruku, and shows longtime readers more of the site of Kallor's ancient empire and the location of the ceremony that called down the Crippled God. It is a big novel and while Esslemont uses the frame work that he and Erikson have created it's more focused and less dependent on the story Erikson has already laid out.

Esslemont's own talent, style and creativity shines through. This is a Malazan book, but an Esslemont novel. It is big, with a complex plot and multiple storylines carefully handled and coupled with a compelling pace. Esslemont definitely sits high on my list of exciting writers of epic fantasy.

By David Dalglish

Though this title is a 'debut' it is not the first book Dalglish has ever written or sold, it is however the first he has sold via a major publisher.

David Dalglish found bestselling stardom self-publishing his epic fantasy works as ebooks. A viable option these days as ebooks are becoming a larger and and large 'test market' for publishers and scouts all the time.

A Dance of Cloaks was originally a standalone created to show how Aaron becomes the person some readers may have met in Book 2 of the epublished Half Orc series. Dalglish had also been inspired by George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones and wanted to create a world where no-one was safe and the reader needs to read to find out what happens next.

The story is twisted and complex, making - to my mind - a fantastic read, and one that is hard to put down. And if his online popularity is anything to go by I think this might be the start of a very promising career.

Assassin or protector; every choice has its consequences.

Thren Felhorn is the greatest assassin of his time. Marshalling the thieves' guilds under his control, he declares war against the Trifect, an allegiance of wealthy and powerful nobles.

His son, Aaron, has been groomed since birth to be his heir. Sent to kill the daughter of a priest, Aaron instead risks his own life to protect her from the wrath of his guild. In doing so, he glimpses a world beyond poison, daggers, and the iron grip of his father.

Two SF masters team up for this near-future thriller built around the conspiracy theory that NASA is keeping secrets about the Apollo program.

The stringing along release of information, much like a police procedural, builds a well told tale with authentic characters whom readers will find it easy to empathise with and a conclusion that is imaginative but also believable.

Be warned, get comfortable before opening this book. You are in for a very enjoyable ride.

"Houston, we have a problem."

Formerly a cynical, ambitious PR man, Jerry Culpepper finally found a client he could believe in when he was hired as NASA's public affairs director. Proud of the Agency's history and sure of its destiny, he was thrilled to be a part of its future.

But public disinterest and budget cuts changed that future. Now, a half century after the first Moon landing, Jerry feels like the only one with stars in his eyes.

Then a fifty-year-old secret about the Apollo XI mission is revealed, and he finds himself embroiled in the biggest controversy of the twenty-first century, one that will test his ability, and his willingness, to spin the truth about a conspiracy of reality-altering proportions...

Whether you have read it or not you will most likely have heard of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Written in 1985 and a Hugo and Nebula award winning novel, Ender's Game has been made into a movie which will be gracing the big screen shortly.

Ender's Game is fast-paced and becomes steadily more intense as the book goes on, with a twist that I was too engrossed to see coming, and several other tantalising discoveries follow.

Andrew "Ender" Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. Ender may be the military genius Earth desperately needs in a war against an alien enemy seeking to destroy all human life. The only way to find out is to throw Ender into ever harsher training, to chip away and find the diamond inside, or destroy him utterly. Ender Wiggin is six years old when it begins. He will grow up fast.
