BOOK OF THE MONTH
Click here for more details or to order THE ROAD TO MIDDLEMARCH
by Rebecca Mead

Caroline Baum: If only this book had existed when I was set George Eliot's classic to read at school. Rebecca Mead's infectious enthusiasm and scholarly insights are impossible to resist, drawing the reader back to Middlemarch like a magnet.

Admittedly, Mead, a senior writer for the New Yorker, is a self-confessed Middlemarch tragic. She read the novel first aged seventeen and has read it again every five years since.
That's serious fandom.

For her, Middlemarch is like a running spring, constantly refreshing and replenishing her with new wisdom and pleasure. In this book Mead shares not only the joy of reading Eliot but of understanding why Eliot wrote it as she did.

Guiding the reader with expert judgement, Mead embarks on a pilgrimage through the book, visiting all Eliot's sources and archives, investigating the mismatched marriage of Dorothea and Casaubon and all the other characters who people its landscape like a literary detective; through her extensive correspondence and journals, she discovers fascinating insights into Eliot herself and her unconventional personal life as an eminent Victorian. Throughout, Mead maintains a light touch, never gets bogged down in her research, keeping her erudition entertaining. This is a truly satisfying sensitive work that celebrates the rewards of patient, careful and deep reading and re-reading, essential for anyone who cares about literature.

AMERICAN FICTION

 by Armistead Maupin

Caroline Baum: It had to happen. Anna Madrigal, the transgender landlady at Barbary Lane whom we have loved since Tales of the City has grown older, along with her bohemian tenants and just like the rest of us. In fact, forty years on, she's now ninety two! She and her friends now have iPads and use Facebook and twitter, and the gay couples are as married as the straights.

Few authors know their characters as well as Maupin, who writes with tender wry affection for this motley community and their very Californian foibles.

If you have to say goodbye to characters you love, this is the way to do it.

Click here for more details or to order CARTHAGE
by Joyce Carol Oates

Caroline Baum: There's something relentless, and bleak and taut that makes Joyce Carol Oates' Carthage compelling as a snapshot of small town American angst. It's the story of what happens when Cressida Mayfield - a young woman who is the intelligent sister as opposed to the pretty one, goes missing - and the last person she was seen with was her sister's fiancé, newly returned form the war in Iraq where he was severely disabled.

Oates has long been an explorer of the dark soul of her country. Here she focusses on the implosion of a family, wielding her controlled prose like a scalpel, dissecting the flesh and the psyche and degrees of responsibility of the Mayfields with detached and chilly precision. It's disturbing, unsettling and lethally effective, though I wouldn't call the experience enjoyable.

by Alice Hoffman

Caroline Baum: The early twentieth century in New York attracted its fair share of hucksters and opportunists according to Alice Hoffmann, who did extensive research to write this colourful blend of history and romance. She certainly knows how to bring Coney Island in 1911 to life, with its strange mixture of émigrés and freak show artists, its shady characters and its idealists.

At the heart of her story are Coralie, an exceptional swimmer who appears in her father's museum as a mermaid and Eddie, a young Russian Jewish immigrant who witnesses the horrors of a factory fire and becomes involved in the mystery of a young woman's disappearance. Hoffman fans will not be disappointed: this is a potent, intense mix of drama and mystery set against the tawdry effects of Coney Island.

AMERICAN FICTION/ROMANCE
Click here for more details or to order THAT PART WAS TRUE
by Deborah McKinlay

Caroline Baum: Mature age romance can be sentimental and icky if too much sugar is part of the mixture. Happily this is not the case in this gentle, genteel novel about two people on their own.

When British country divorcee Eve Petworth writes to Jackson Cooper to praise a scene in one of the bestselling novels that has earned him his enviably comfortable Hamptons lifestyle, she begins a correspondence that blooms into friendship. Eve is caught up in her overbearing daughter Izzy's wedding plans, while Jack is dating an attractive woman who is successful, straight-talking and independent.

Both Eve and Jack share an amateur interest in food, which becomes an easy natural topic of their correspondence, as they get to know each other at a safe distance. But will they ever meet?

A mild, unrushed bittersweet examination of how new relationships can begin in the later stages of life.

HISTORICAL FICTION
Click here for more details or to order THE VISITORS
by Sally Beauman

Caroline Baum: There can be few stories about archaeology as thrilling as Howard Carter's discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamum in the Valley of the Kings in 1922.

It's so full of suspense and intrigue that it has many of the perfect elements of fiction. Sally Beauman cleverly mixes together a large cast of real life figures with an equally large cast of equally flamboyant fictional ones in the stylish hotel lobbies and dining rooms of colonial Egypt as the drama plays out in the desert.

Yes there is a bit of cultural stereotyping and a few clichés at play here, but they are minor and harmless and don't get in the way of a satisfyingly immersive read that's entertaining and lots of authentic juicy detail about the dig, how it was financed and the media frenzy it generated.

BIOGRAPHY
Click here for more details or to order SHEILA
by Robert Wainwright

Caroline Baum: If you feel like a guilty pleasure read that is full of juicy gossip and society scandal in high places you will love this biography of Sheila Chisholm an Australian beauty you've never heard of who mixed with British royalty including the future king of England and Hollywood celebrities like Rudolph Valentino.

This is a meticulously researched biography that tells a fascinating story without fawning and breathless sycophancy, providing far more than a she-slept-with-so-and-so-and-she- dined-with-so-and-so account of a life that went beyond glamour.

The overwhelming sense one gets of what made Sheila so popular in society circles was that apart from her beauty, she was obviously loyal, discreet, fun, athletic, resilient and generous. Her friendships were lasting as well as dazzling and she used her position to become an influential charity hostess, making the most of the unique opportunities life offered her.

MEMOIR

by Mandy Sayer

Caroline Baum: Mandy Sayer's third volume of memoir about her marriage to acclaimed black poet Yusef Komunyakaa is like a car crash - you just can't look away. It begins with a shocking episode of violence that helps prepares the reader for the emotional rollercoaster ahead. Told with raw candour, it documents a passionate, toxic relationship in which jealousy, suspicion and dishonesty wreck the hopes of a couple who should have everything, given their love and their talents. But there is too much baggage here. Loss, mental illness, racism and poverty erode intimacy and corrode what started off as shiny.

Despite this, Sayer begins to write herself into another life. Slowly but surely as Yusef wins the Pulitzer and becomes more and more successful, she too finds her voice, gains recognition and confidence and steps away from  the lies and paranoia to emerge from the wreckage strong and determined.

FOOD

by Natalie Young

Caroline Baum: One day Lizzie Prain, a fifty something housewife living in a cottage in the British woods, decides to murder and eat her husband Jacob. She does so methodically, following the encouraging notes she has written herself about how to get over her disgust.

This very dark premise sounds like a real recipe for success but it did not work for me. I found Lizzie's voice insufferable. She irritated me so much I would happily have boiled her myself.

I only mention it because this book is bound to attract attention given its shock value, and I am sure other readers will find its grotesque mixture of the nasty and the homely appealing.

For me it's not a patch on books in the food and crime genre like The Debt to Pleasure by John Lanchester.

by Brian Conaghan

Caroline Baum: I'm going to say what everyone else is going to say: this novel does for Tourette's what Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time did for Asperger's. Dylan Mint (great name) is a wonderfully realised creation, a boy with a wonderfully fruity turn of phrase and a great attitude. Of course he gets the wrong end of the stick about a lot of adult things, and these misunderstandings provide playful, funny, bittersweet plot twists and turns but it's his pre-teen personality with its hormonally surges and involuntary outbursts of obscenities that makes this such an entertaining read.

by Hanif Kureishi

Caroline Baum: I was looking forward to this as a new novel by Kureishi is a literary event. Well I am sorry to say it doesn't work for me although the basic premise is a good one: Harry, a young writer is commissioned to write a biography to boost the career and profile of Mamoon, an eminent  Indian born writer whose reputation is fading with age. Harry's publisher wants a salacious story full of headline generating scandal but Mamoon has something different in mind altogether.

It's obviously a satirical fable, but it lacks the necessary sharpness and bite. The dialogue feels stilted and fake. Of course it's tempting to see Mamoon as a cross between Rushdie and Naipaul but that's not enough to save this piece of literary mischief from feeling slight, trite and trivial. Sorry, but I have to be honest (and save you the time I wasted).

by Noel Beddoe

Caroline Baum: This crime novel is set in the badlands of Port Kembla, the industrial heartland of Wollongong. Cringilla is a cultural melting pot, full of migrant workers who have lost their job at the steelworks or the port.

When a young boy is killed in a targeted shooting there, his mates on the street Jimmy and Piggy, who witnessed the crime, are rattled. But they also need to protect their new venture: a fledgling drug business. Detective Gordon Winter's investigation reveals hidden bonds of loyalty and secrets that threaten both his professional and personal life. And how does all this tie up with the sexual assault on Luz Solomona, the most beautiful girl in town?

This is a slow burn, big on place and atmosphere, short on plot and pace, that reminded me of the film The Combination.

Caroline Baum: Detective Bart Moy is back in the country town where his elderly, cantankerous ailing father lives when a boy goes missing. But it seems no one has reported a missing child. Moy keeps looking. He's lost a son of his own.

What I like about this is it's not just a crime novel. It's also a thoughtful meditation on father son relationships and a really subtle exploration of what it means to come back to a small place where everyone knows you and your business.

AUSTRALIAN FICTION
Click here for more details or to order ASKING FOR TROUBLE
by Peter Timms

Caroline Baum: Distinguished art critic Peter Timms reveals a sharp talent for fiction with this astringent debut novel in which school bullying turns into something with far reaching consequences.

The story is told through the eyes of Harry Bascombe: he's a shy boy with a not quite right in the head brother, a highly strung mother and an ineffectual father. He's no good at sports and he has few friends. He'd rather forget his childhood but now a nosey researcher for a history program about a murder case comes calling, forcing Harry to remember what he would rather forget and to attempt to put things right.

What makes this such a satisfying read is the combination of well observed characters and period detail, the evocation of the fifties and its social conventions, the paranoia about communism, the excitement around the Olympics, the innovation of television and Harry's vinegary point of view.

Caroline Baum: When her husband dies young, Celia, becomes the owner of a small apartment building and chooses her tenants carefully. Privacy and harmony are paramount. But then Hope moves in and everything changes. On the run from a failed marriage, she is in thrall to a sinister, violent man and her noisy affair disrupts the building's peace. Then another elderly tenant disappears. Celia's curiosity about the people sharing her home sucks her into re-engaging with life with consequences she could never imagine.

This psychological portrait of grief is a very confident debut, with a polished, controlled style, and a quietly building undertow of erotic tension that reminded me of Hitchcock's Rear Window.

by David Grossman

In Falling Out of Time, David Grossman has created a genre-defying drama--part play, part prose, pure poetry--to tell the story of bereaved parents setting out to reach their lost children.

It begins in a small village, in a kitchen, where a man announces to his wife that he is leaving, embarking on a journey in search of their dead son. The man-called simply the "Walking Man" --paces in ever-widening circles around the town. One after another, all manner of townsfolk fall into step with him (the Net Mender, the Midwife, the Elderly Maths Teacher, even the Duke), each enduring his or her own loss. The walkers raise questions of grief and bereavement: Can death be overcome by an intensity of speech or memory? Is it possible, even for a fleeting moment, to call to the dead and free them from their death? Grossman's answer to such questions is a hymn to these characters, who ultimately find more...

The funeral of Charles Henry Topping on Manhattan's Upper East Side would have been a minor affair (his two-hundred-word obit in The New York Times notwithstanding) but for the presence of one particular mourner: the notoriously reclusive author A. N. Dyer, whose novel 'Ampersand' stands as a classic of American teenage angst.

But as Andrew Newbold Dyer delivers the eulogy for his oldest friend, he suffers a breakdown over the life he's led and the people he's hurt and the novel that will forever endure as his legacy. He must gather his three sons for the first time in many years-before it's too late.

So begins a wild, transformative, heartbreaking week, as witnessed by Philip Topping, who, like his late father, finds himself caught up in the swirl of the Dyer family. First there's son Richard, a struggling screenwriter and father, returning from self-imposed exile in California. In the middle lingers Jamie, settled in Brooklyn after his twenty-year mission of making documentaries about human suffering. And last is Andy, the half brother whose more...

For decades, nothing disturbed our peaceful equilibrium. Until Fred arrived. Until he took one of us from among from us and made her different. Until he showed us what our world was made of...

Will it be Dokuzen, with its dreams of a slave empire, or will it be Vales, armed only with Rhiannon and her magic - and the truth about why the rulers of Dokuzen claim to be elves? Into this mix comes Sendatsu. Rejected by his true love, hated by his father, hunted by his former best friend, he now burns with the desire to build a better world for his children. Betrayal follows lies which follows more betrayal as the true power behind the vicious struggle is revealed. The fate of all the lands rests on a sword's edge ...

I'D EAT THAT
by Callum Hann

I remember crusty just-baked bread, rubbed with juicy tomato flesh, swimming in a puddle of thick green olive oil. I am seven years old. I sit on a stool in my grandmother's house. It is the height of summer in a seaside village in the south of Greece. We little Aussies devour 'tomato sandwiches' as the family chats and laughs and swats flies ... From the first heady taste of tomatoes on home-baked bread in her mother's village in Petalidi, to sitting at a taverna some 30 years later in Ithaka with her young family, Spiri Tsintziras goes on a culinary, creative and spiritual journey that propels her back and forth between Europe and Australia. These evocative, funny and poignant stories explore how food and culture, language more...

PHILOSOPHY
Click here for more details or to order THE NEWS
by Alain De Botton

The news is everywhere and we check it constantly - but what is it doing to our minds?

The news occupies the same dominant position in modern society as religion once did, but we rarely consider its impact on us. In this dazzling new book, Alain de Botton, the bestselling author of Religion for Atheists, takes twenty-five archetypal news stories - from an aircrash to a murder, a celebrity interview to a political scandal - and submits them to unusually intense analysis.

He raises questions like: How come disaster stories are often so uplifting? What makes the love lives of celebrities so interesting? Why do we enjoy politicians being brought down? Why are upheavals in far off lands often so . . . boring?

De Botton has written the ultimate manual for our news-addicted age, one sure to bring calm, understanding and a measure of sanity to our daily (and sometimes even hourly) interactions with the news machine.

Farmageddon: the quiet revolution of mega-farming that is threatening our countryside, farms and food

In the post-war years there was a humanitarian desire to feed people effectively and cheaply. But now the insidious creep of industrial agriculture, powered by the remorseless drive to get more for less, has taken hold. Farm animals have slowly disappeared from fields; the countryside is turning to wildlife desert, and mysterious and potentially deadly viruses have entered our food chain.

Farmageddon is a wake-up call to change our current food production and eating practices. Philip Lymbery takes an investigative journey behind the closed doors of a runaway industry and strives to find a more...

In Australia's public schools, students are now routinely exposed to evangelism from very conservative Christian groups. Marion Maddox uncovers the surprising impact of these groups on once secular public schooling, and the ways in which governments have been persuaded to support their cause.

Fewer Australians now practise a religion or believe in God than ever. Yet our governments increasingly push conservative Christianity on our children.

Nearly forty per cent of secondary students attend a private school, which are overwhelmingly Christian. Canberra funds them heavily, and sends evangelical Christian chaplains into both public and more...

'All bubbles collapse,' warns Harry Dent. Australia emerged remarkably unscathed from the last great global recession of 2008/09. But with heavily overvalued real estate and repidly falling commodity and resource prices, are we heading for an economic downturn?

As a leading economic forecaster, Harry Dent relies on a not-so-secret weapon: demographics. Dent can tell a client exactly when people will spend the most on a bag of chips, or a car. And he can explain why our economy has risen and fallen with the peak of spending generations, and why we now face a growing demographic cliff with the accelerating retirement of the Baby Boomers around the world.

The bestselling author of Sweet Poison shows us how to get the better of an education system that is costing a fortune in fees, yet failing to deliver.

David Gillespie has six kids. When it came time to select high schools, he thought it worth doing some investigation to assess the level of advantage his kids would enjoy if he spent the required $1.3 million to send them all to private schools.

Shockingly, the answer was: none whatsoever.

Intrigued, David continued his research, only to discover he was wrong on most counts - as are most parents - when it comes to working out what factors deliver a great education. He discovered that class size doesn't matter, your kids aren't any better off in co-ed than single-sex schools (and vice versa), composite classes are more...

A collection of essays on writers and writing by the Booker-shortlisted novelist and critic.

Writing about real lives takes various forms, which overlap and may be combined with each other: biography, autobiography, biographical criticism, biographical fiction, memoir, confession, diary.

In these thoughtful and enlightening essays David Lodge considers some particularly interesting examples of life-writing, and contributes several of his own. The subjects include celebrated modern British writers such as Graham Greene, Kingsley Amis, Muriel Spark and Alan Bennett, and two major figures from the past, Anthony Trollope and H.G.Wells. Lodge examines connections between the style and the man in the diaries of the playwright Simon Gray and the cultural criticism of Terry Eagleton, and recalls how his more...

When Edmund White moved to Paris in 1983, he was forty-three years old, couldn't speak French and knew just two people in the entire city, but soon discovered the anxieties and pleasures of mastering a new culture. When he left, fifteen years later, to return to the US, he was fluent enough to broadcast on French radio and TV, and as a journalist had made the acquaintance of everyone from Yves St Laurent to Catherine Deneuve to Michel Foucault. by Antonella Fenech Kroke

Located at the heart of the Italian peninsula, Florence was already a center of commerce and fine craftsmanship by 1252, when it began to mint its own currency, the gold florin, the "dollar of the Middle Ages." The great wealth amassed by the Medici, the Strozzi, the Pitti, and other merchant and banking families was in some part responsible for the flowering of the arts, literature, philosophy, and science in the period that followed, a phenomenon that even then was recognized as, and called, a renaissance. The legacy of this great epoch, both tangible and spiritual, ensured that Florence would remain a beacon of culture through its succeeding centuries of ducal rule, eventually becoming an essential stop on the Grand Tour and a font of inspiration for figures like Stendhal and Ruskin.

Once the epitome of soigné worldly glamour, the words "jet set" conjure images of exotic global destinations and golden beaches; clandestine rendez-vous on opulent yachts; star-studded parties in palatial mansions, the women in couture gowns and glittering jewels, the men in debonair tuxedos. The people of the jet set were the last vestiges of a leisured and cultivated age, a world of taste and culture, elegance and beauty.

Swans: Legends of Jet Society captures the spirit of this world, in which more...

by Valentino, Claire Catterall

Valentino: Master of Couture is an exhibition at the Somerset House co-organized by Valentino himself, who selected over 130 dresses for the exhibition.

The book focues as much on Valentino and his glamorous lifestyle as it does on his legendary dressmaking techniques and atelier. (The overwhelming success of Matt Tyrnauer's film "Valentino: The Last Emperor" attests to the public's hunger for "behind the scenes" glimpses of Valentino's life). The designers had unprecedented access to Valentino's personal archive, and the selected visual material includes more...

by Carol Meldrum

Finding the perfect man can be difficult, but this great new book has the answer - knit your own!

First decide what you want your knitted boyfriend to look like. Decide on his height, build and skin colour and then turn to the hairstyle gallery. There are woolly beards, moustaches, quiffs or dreadlocks to choose from.

Then decide what he does for a living. Like a man in knitted uniform? Make your boyfriend into a chef, doctor, a fireman or a policeman. Prefer something a little smarter? Knit a suit, tie and briefcase and make him into a lawyer, banker or accountant. Or if you want something more exciting, we have patterns to make an astronaut, rock star, surfer or even an explorer.

Can't decide? Mix and match our clothing patterns to create a whole wardrobe. And the best thing about a knitted boyfriend? He doesn't answer back!
