BOOK OF THE MONTH
Click here for more details or to order A MAD AND WONDERFUL THING
by Mark Mulholland

Caroline Baum: Remember that phrase from Jerry McGuire 'You had me at hello'? Well, this book did that. It reeks of Irish charm, without laying on Oirish cliché.

Intense and unashamedly passionate and romantic, this is the story of Johnny Donnelly, a  young man blessed with charisma and charm,  beloved by all who know him. He falls hard for the beautiful Cora Flannery but keeps a secret from her: in his other life, he is an IRA sniper, shooting British soldiers. When tragedy strikes, Johnny has to choose his loyalties and find a new way to love his country.

Written with playful, light and poetic language that embraces music, a proud history, a beloved and wild landscape and the country's darker torment, the novel shifts mood effortlessly from tragedy to love story as swiftly as the Irish weather. It tackles  the great moral paradox of  its central character with deftness and sensitivity and changes gear, ramping up the drama to an unexpected thriller-style climax. A sparkling debut that celebrates the vitality, resilience and humanity of Ireland.

by Robert Glancy

Caroline Baum:
Do you read the fine print? No, thought not. No one does. Well here's a hilariously sharp satire - a modern day cautionary tale - about what happens when the fine print comes into focus with unforeseen consequences. After his car accident, Frank remembers nothing except that he is a lawyer who specialises in contractual fine print. He does not recognise his briskly efficient and ambitious wife Alice and he's not sure about his brother Oscar's decision to take the family business into partnership with an arms manufacturer. Footnoted with fine print observations and asides, this is a clever, sure-footed debut, an absurdist romp about second chances that will remind readers the devil is in the detail.

Booktopia's John Purcell loves this book and has raved about it on the blog. So to echo his sentiment I could just have saved myself the trouble and written: what he said.)

AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Click here for more details or to order MAKING SOAPIES IN KABUL
by Trudi-Ann Tierney

Caroline Baum: Aussie women are a pretty gutsy lot, the kind you want in a crisis. There's nothing they won't tackle and take in their stride. Trudi Ann Tierney is the perfect example of that combo of practicality, humour and toughness that is so typical of the national temperament. So when her job minding a bar in Kabul while the owners take some much needed R and R morphs into producing television drama for Afghan viewers, no worries. She's on it.

Her staff are inexperienced and her actors can't read, which makes learning their lines awkward. Oh, and she's also delivering subtle public messages about bomb-making courtesy of her shadowy masters... It does help that she can drink like a fish and appears to thrive in a climate of stress and near farcical absurdity, prepared to risk her life on hair-raising drives through mine-infested, avalanche-prone country.

She tells it like it is, bringing life in Ka-bubble, as it is known to the diplomats, do-gooders and security contractors who fly in and out to get their fix of adrenalin to the page with raw candour.

by TaraShea Nesbit

Caroline Baum: When the scientists involved in the Manhattan Project were shipped out to the desert, their wives went too. Not knowing what was awaiting them and unable to tell their families where they were going or how long for. When they got there, their homes were not ready, nothing worked and they had no resources except each other. Nesbit makes the bold move of narrating the story in the first person plural - we - presenting the women as a group, and then fracturing the ensemble off with individual anecdotes about one woman's baby, another's infidelity... It's a brilliant stroke and despite my initial doubts about how long she could sustain this voice for, it works, suggesting the solidarity of the disparate women marooned in the desert, constrained by secrecy, united in their isolation and evoking the norms of the Cold War era of convention and propriety.

A really imaginative treatment of women who have previously been invisible to history, animated with sympathy and insight.

Caroline Baum: A classic older woman seduction story told by a twenty year old man stranded at a station on his way back to Paris from a disastrous holiday with his girlfriend. When Elodie Lavelle strolls into the station, she turns his life inside out with her extravagant indulgence, her overt sensuality and her air of mystery. He is captivated.

I can't say I warmed to this: neither the narrator nor his object of desire appeared all that plausible to me so that I felt I was in the grip of just another young man's fantasy that was all about stylish surfaces and illicit sex. Looking at the dust jacket photo of the author I see he is very young, like his narrator, which may explain the gaucheness and forced dialogue.

Caroline Baum: In Anita Heiss' latest, likeable and breezy novel, five women, best friends (Tiddas means friend in northern Koori) for decades, meet to talk about each other's lives at their book group. Romance and career dilemmas, baby yearnings, all get aired and shared with laughter and tears over chai lattes and in between sessions of retail therapy and Bikram yoga.

The lifestyle is upwardly mobile, the setting is urban Brisbane and the woman are justifiably proud of their status, earning power and confidence while never forgetting that their bonds of sisterhood have been passed down through a culture of strong women.

Caroline Baum: Detective Nhu Kelly, known as Ned by her colleagues, is a mess after being shot. But she's out on the streets of Cabramatta, working the new Asian crime wave of heroin, home invasions and hits. To the cops, her Vietnamese heritage is an asset, but to her, still damaged and prone to terrifying flashbacks, it is also a burden, freighted with assumptions and expectations.

Reeking of authentic insight into the effect of post-traumatic stress, this is gripping and gritty stuff from a writer who spent over a decade as a detective and clearly knows her territory - not only about procedure, but about human psychology.

The picture Newton paints ain't pretty and may leave readers wondering why any woman would join the police force. She brings real complexity and compassion to the character of Ned, creating a portrait of isolation, anxiety and conflict that is sometimes uncomfortable to read it feels so real. Ned is obsessed with a score she needs to settle, but is she sufficiently recovered to make the right decisions and rebuild her life?

MEMOIR
Click here for more details or to order MISTER OWITA'S GUIDE TO GARDENING
by Carol Wall

Caroline Baum: How confusing. I started reading this as a novel and only realised a few chapters in that it must be a memoir. Titles and covers can be misleading!

American southerner Carol Wall has reached a typical crossroads in her mid-life. She lives comfortably in a prosperous and close knit community. She has overcome cancer, and her marriage is strong. To her embarrassment, one day she notices that her garden is looking distinctly neglected, compared with her neighbour's which looks spectacular, thanks to the attention of Giles Owita, a gardener from Kenya.

Before long, Giles Owita is transforming far more than Carol's garden. What she learns from his friendship will help her face the challenges of life with greater awareness, gratitude and grace.

For some, the southern sentimentality of this very personal story may be a little too cloying and some may find its lessons too simple, but for others they will be entirely appropriate and meaningful depending on where you are on your journey and how readily you accept a garden as a metaphor for life.

Caroline Baum: ... and your enemies closer, so the saying goes. A deliciously nasty story of a marriage wrecked by a best friend turned predator.

Natty and Sean run a boutique hotel in the Lake District. She is a Type A personality with an obsession with fastidiousness and efficiency and runs her family like a sergeant major. He is all laid back charm and boyish good looks and wishes his wife made more time for sex. So when Natty is called away urgently and her best friend Eve offers to stay and look after the kids, you know what's going to happen. Except that there are plenty more twists to the tale ahead.

Crisp as new bed sheets, taut as a fresh facelift, this is a satisfyingly twisted story of malice and havoc.

Caroline Baum: After a few wrong turns, Lily and her friend Simone decide to go on a sabboytical or man break. Lily needs to focus on her TV production career on a cooking show but when the new on camera cook turns out to be a dish, her romantic fasting diet intentions are tested by an unexpected rival.

Zoe Foster may have a Miles Franklin winner as a father (who discouraged her from being a writer) but her talent is very much her own. Playful, hip and fun, she has the chick lit thing down pat - plenty of glamour, social media, goss, casual sex and girlfriend issues. Her ear for dialogue never lets her down and the likeable freshness of her own high profile as part of a media golden couple comes through on the page. This is her moment.

Caroline Baum: A collection of thoughtful, often cerebral short stories with a cosmopolitan perspective from a Lebanese writer who now lives in Sydney.

His characters are often solitary: a sniper in Beirut, a traveller on a plane musing on fellow passengers, a priest anxious for promotion, a lord mayor on a way to deliver a speech... we share their interior lives as fragments of a bigger canvas of humanity on the move. People uprooted, people in transit, both past and present. Prose full of nuance and ambiguity.

Fierce in her opinions, a survivor of the wars that have ripped her home apart, she is also tart, crabby, vinegary and erudite - an intimidating, formidable combination but also an inspiring one for her undimmed vitality and solitary resilience.

As you'd expect from a book with this title, this novel is soaked in sex. Not so much the act of it, but obsessional teenage thinking about it, imbuing the act with an almost metaphysical stature. Narrated by a voyeur classmate who studies the It Couple at his WASP liberal American boarding school, it is told in cool, polished prose that seethes with an undertow of longing and jealousy. You just know things are going to end badly.

APRIL TITLE: AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Click here for more details or to order BOYHOOD ISLAND
by Karl Ove Knausgaard

I've read volume one of My Struggle and am halfway through part two so I had to skip ahead to this new volume of the Knausgaard epic autobiography, which marks its halfway point. Maybe it's because I saw him speak last year at Sydney Writers Festival and yes, he is a tall handsome Viking who looks like an older version of Brad Pitt. But what was so memorable was his honesty and vulnerability, his willingness to admit to shame and other socially awkward and traditionally private emotions: he set a new benchmark for the examined life.

The plaudits for this work as it is gradually translated into English keep coming (you know you are doing something right when Zadie Smith is a fan). It is sweeping, intense, and incredibly intimate. This third instalment is all saturated colour like an early Kodak snapshot from an old family album. I see a boy running between sand hills on an isolated island in a Norwegian summer. For some reason I imagine him in a bright red knitted sweater, but that's just me. Knausgaard gives us plenty of detail but also leaves the reader room to fill in the gaps.

As a young boy he is full of curiosity about the world and has that wonderful sense of safety and freedom within his community as he explores its boundaries and discovers what makes him, his family and friends tick. He learns to navigate his father's harshness and that not all fathers are alike. The prose is pared back, unadorned, as plain as a stripped pine table, but utterly compelling and addictive. I can't wait for more.

John Purcell: Highly recommended. If you like Raymond Carver and Annie Proulx you'll probably find, as I have, something very special in the pages of Willy Vlautin's The Free - John Purcell, The Booktopia Book Guru.

Blurb: The life he knew before the bomb no longer existed. That Leroy Kervin was gone. Willy Vlautin's stunning fourth novel opens with Leroy, a young, wounded, Iraq veteran, waking to a rare moment of clarity, his senses flooded with the beauty of remembering who he is but the pain of realising it won't last. When his attempt to end his half-life fails, he is taken to the local hospital where he is looked after by a nurse called Pauline, and visited by Freddie, the night-watchman from his group home for disabled men.

As the stories of these three wounded characters circle and cross each other, we come to learn more of their lives. The father who caused her mother to abandon them both, and who Pauline loves and loathes in equal measure, the daughters Freddie yearns to be re-united with and, in a mysterious more...

by Robert Musil

First published in 1906, young Torless is sent to a bleak military boarding school which is vast change from his accustomed, comfortable, free-thinking home.

As the nineteenth century draws to an end, young Torless is sent to a military boarding school for the sons of the nobility on the eastern outreaches of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Far from his comfortable, free-thinking bourgeois home and left to his own devices, he experiences the joy, pain and self-doubt of adolescence. He is confronted with desire and love, but also his own cruelty, as he finds himself participating in his fellow pupils' bullying campaigns. A dark Bildungsroman which shocked its readership at the time, Robert Musil's first novel is a fresco of psychoanalysis, philosophy, eroticism, snobbery, sado- masochism and schoolboy humour, a hothouse of alternately repressed and unchained desires that prefigure the carnage of both World Wars.

Or was it simply another hoax, the desperate ploy of a poor, ambitious young writer, just as he had been, who schemed, just as he had schemed, to captivate the fickle attention of the public by tying a painter to the taffrail of a famous mystery ship?

A ghost ship appears in the mist.

To a struggling author called Arthur Conan Doyle, it is an inspiration.

To Violet Petra, the most infamous mystic of her age, it is a reminder.

To the death-obsessed Victorian public, it is a preoccupation.

And to one family, tied to the sea for generations, it is a more...

SHORT STORIES
Click here for more details or to order ALL THE RAGE
by A. L. Kennedy

A dozen stories: a dozen ways of looking at love, or the lack of love. Over five previous collections, A. L. Kennedy has shown herself to be a master of the short form, with a perfect way with sentences and a voice so distinct as to be instantly recognisable.

Here, as before, lies the battlefield of the heart, where characters who have suffered disaffection, alienation or emotional damage somehow emerge - haltingly, awkwardly - into the astonishment of intimacy. And here, too, are the ones who will not shake off the hurt and the loss, who will not come through.

The extraordinary title story takes place on a railway platform, with a couple waiting for a train that never comes, and opens out into the husband's shocking admission of years of deceit, and a devastating portrait of more...

From his first collection, The Same Door, released in 1959, to his last, My Father's Tears, published fifty years later, John Updike was America's reigning master of the short story, 'our second Hawthorne,' as Philip Roth described him. His evocations of small-town Pennsylvania life, and of his own religious, artistic, and sexual awakening, transfixed readers of The New Yorker and of the early collections Pigeon Feathers (1962) and The Music School (1966). by Nick Cutter

He felt something touch his hand... which is when he looked down...

For the scouts of Troop 52, three days of camping, hiking and survival lessons on the remote shores of Falstaff Island will be the closest thing they'll get to a proper holiday this year.

Which was when he saw it...

But when an emaciated figure unexpectedly stumbles into their camp begging for food, the trip takes a horrifying turn. The man is not just hungry, he's sick. Sick in a way they have never seen before.

Which was when he screamed...

Cut off from the mainland, the scouts of Troop 52 face a nightmare far worse than anything they could have made up around a campfire. To survive they will have to fight their fears, the elements... and eventually each other.

FAMILY GUY

by Seth MacFarlane

From the creator of Family Guy, American Dad! and Ted comes a Western with a modern comic spin, following a cowardly farmer who seeks the help of a gunslinger's wife to win back the woman who left him.

Mild-mannered sheep farmer Albert Stark is fed up with the harsh life of the American frontier, where it seems everything and anything can kill you: Duels at high noon. Barroom brawls. Poisonous snakes. Cholera-infected drinking water. Tumbleweed abrasion. Something called 'toe-foot.' Even a trip to the outhouse.

Yes, there are a million ways to die in the wild, wild West, and Albert plans to avoid them all. Some people think that makes him a coward. Albert calls it common sense. But when his girlfriend dumps him for the more...

POETRY

by David Malouf

In his first full volume of poetry since Typewriter Music in 2007, David Malouf once again shows us why he is one of Australia's most enduring and respected writers.

David Malouf's new collection comes to rest at the perfect, still moment of 'silence, following talk' after its exploration of memory, imagination and mortality.

With elegance and wit, these poems move from profound depths to whimsy and playfulness. As Malouf interweaves light and dark, levity and gravity, he offers a vision of life on 'this patch/of earth and its green things', charting the resilience of beauty amidst stubborn human grace.

THE COMPLETE POEMS OF C. P. CAVAFY

THE POETRY OF SEX
by Sophie Hannah
Click here for more details or to order
From the acclaimed author of 'The Lost', a translation that scales new heights in modern poetic rendering. With a masterful eye for irony and an ear for the music of Cavafy's form, Daniel Mendelsohn's translation brings to English the poet who won acclaim from generations of writers, E.M. Forster and T.S. Eliot among them. Spanning the fall of Homeric heroes to the rise of the modern world, Cavafy's poetry collapses the spectra of time, geography and age into intimately personal elegies. Works such as "Waiting for the Barbarians" and "Ithica", famed for their revival of the ancient worlds, continue to address the modern reader in terms of timeless relevance. Here they are accompanied by Cavafy's unfinished more...

'It's the way that you say I don't usually do this.'

Romance and poetry seem to go hand in hand but - implicit, explicit, nuanced or starkly frank - sex itself has long been a staple subject for poets. In fact it's hard to imagine a more fruitful subject for poets than sex, in all its glorious manifestations: from desire and hope, through disappointment and confusion, to conclusion and consequence. And little has changed over the centuries, as Sophie Hannah's anthology vividly demonstrates, from Ovid describing a summer afternoon of love-making to Rosemary Tonks telling the Story of a Hotel Room. Moods and attitudes may vary but the drive persists, as does the desire  more...

There is succulent Pot-Roasted Leg of Lamb with Black Olives served with Courgette Gratin, and Potato and Sorrel Gratin, delicious with just six ingredients. by Zoe Daniel

Zoe Daniel is the ABC's South-East Asia correspondent, based in Bangkok with her husband and young family. She reports on nine countries across Southeast Asia filing copy and stories for TV, radio, online and social media. She was the Africa correspondent from 2005 until 2007 and spent 2009 covering the Khmer Rouge war crimes trials from Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Zoe's frank and brave memoir, Storyteller, deals with the effects of her work (with its stresses and its constant travel) on her marriage, with the physical and psychological effects of a dangerous, confronting job, and the difficulty of slipping back into her 'regular' life after witnessing deeply disturbing events.

A foreign correspondent's memoir like no other ... this is also the story of a mum and the universal juggle of career and family, as much as it is a foreign correspondent's memoir.

by Jason K. Foster

AUSTRALIAN. The ANZAC tradition was forged on the killing fields of Gallipoli in 1915 and the legend grew throughout the decades at places such as Tobruk, Singapore, Kokoda and Long Tan. A Century of ANZACS is a pictorial history of Australia's involvement in more than a hundred years of war, conflict and peacekeeping, starting with colonial wars in New Zealand and South Africa in the 1800's, right up to our modern peacekeeping roles in Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. With introductions that provide an overview of each conflict in which Australia and New Zealand have served, A Century of Anzacs includes hundreds of rare and evocative images of courage, sacrifice and duty. The book is a tribute to the men and women who served their country in the past, and the present day soldiers and personnel who continue the ANZAC tradition on the international stage.

by Ben Watt

An extraordinary achievement. A moving, funny and beautifully written memoir by musician, DJ and writer Ben Watt which carefully chronicles his parents' lives, their marriage and their decline into old age

Ben Watt's father, Tommy, was a working-class Glaswegian jazz musician, a politicised left-wing bandleader and composer, whose heyday in the late 1950s took him into the glittering heart of London's West End, where he broadcast live with his own orchestra from the BBC's Paris Theatre and played nightly with his quintet at the glamorous Quaglino's. His mother, the daughter of a Methodist parson, Romany, schooled at Cheltenham Ladies' College, was a RADA-trained Shakespearian actress, who had triplets in her first marriage before becoming a leading showbiz feature writer and columnist in the sixties and seventies. They were both divorcees from more...

LITTLE FAILURE
by Gary Shteyngart

A MILE DOWN
by David Vann
Gary Shteyngart's loving but mismatched parents dreamed that he would become a lawyer, or at least an accountant, something their distracted son was simply not cut out to do. Fusing English and Russian, his mother created the term Failurchka-'Little Failure'-which she applied to her son. With love. Mostly.

A candid and deeply poignant story of a Soviet family's trials and tribulations, and of their escape in 1979 to the consumerist promised land of the USA, Little Failure is also an exceptionally funny account of the author's transformation from asthmatic toddler in Leningrad to more...

Work so that you can keep working. It seemed a proposition that could easily end in suicide. I wanted to escape this. I wanted to free myself from the working world and have time to write. And I wanted adventure. Grendel could never free me, but this boat could.

David Vann has loved boats all his life. So when his academic career seems to be stuck in the doldrums, he leaps at the opportunity to start an educational charter business, teaching creative writing workshops aboard a sailboat. But a trip to Turkey sees him dreaming bigger-and before he knows it, he is at the helm of his own ninety-foot boat, running charters along more...

by David Malouf

A collection of personal essays and writing from David Malouf to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Topography, geography, history. Multiculturalism, referendums, the constitution and national occasions. Parental and grandparental romances, the sensual and bountiful beauty of Brisbane, the mysterious offerings of Queenslander houses, and leaving home. The idea of a nation and the heart of its people. Being Australian and Australia's relationship to the world. Putting ourselves on the map.

All these subjects, and more, are explored from the generous, questioning and original perspective of David Malouf.

At the heart of these pieces is the idea of home, where and what it is. What they illustrate is the formation of a man, an Australian and one of the best writers this country has produced.

AN EYE FOR NATURE
by Penny Olsen

Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, this catalogue celebrates the groundbreaking avant-garde artists whose works embody the spirit and decadence of fin de siecle and Belle Epoque Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec and La Vie Moderne is a celebration of the work of a generation of avant-garde artists at the turn of the nineteenth century in Paris who fought for artistic liberation against the strict codes of the Academy. Like the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists who preceded them, the Nabis, Incoherents, Symbolists, and Naturalists sought to reinterpret a rapidly changing society that was no longer easily definable.

In the work of artist William T.Cooper, platypuses swim in green underwater worlds, waves throw up blankets of spray, embers glow in the aftermath of a bushfire, a Thylacine emerges from the shadows, sniffing the air. But it is his paintings of birds which set Cooper apart-his raucous cockatoos, colourful parrots, animated turacos and flamboyantly displaying birds of paradise.

Often placed in meticulously studied landscapes, these intricate bird portraits reveal Cooper's close observation not only of his subjects' appearance, but their habits, poses and behaviour. In this biography, Penny Olsen traces the path of Cooper's life and more...
