Welcome to the March Science Fiction and Fantasy Buzz
There have been rumblings on the World Wide Web that those of us waiting for The Winds of Winter, the sixth volume of A Song of Ice and Fire will definitely not see the book published in 2014. However, a 2015 release is possible. Not really a surprise I know, but still...

However there is always another book on the horizon and Richard Morgan has confirmed that he has completed The Dark Defiles, the concluding volume of the Land Fit For Heroes trilogy which began with The Steel Remains . By all accounts this book is a doorstop - my favorite kind!

This month we have been very lucky to have the astoundingly busy (and organised) Brandon Sanderson schedule us in and answer Booktopia's Ten Terrifying Questions - how cool is that? Check them out below.

And now, on with the Buzz.

Kind regards

Book of the Month

by Brandon Sanderson

At last, at last! It's here at last! Book two in Brandon Sanderson's epic fantasy saga The Stormlight Archives hits the shelves this month. Sanderson hasn't subjected us to quite as long a wait for this book as some authors, do it's true, and it's not like he hasn't been working on anything else in the meantime (you know, like completing The Wheel of Time for Robert Jordan's estate), but when you get a new book that really impresses you... you just want the next one now, right?

Exactly.

If you are a fan of epic fantasy you will adore Sanderson's Stormlight Archive. If you have read Robert Jordan, Kate Elliott, Peter V Brett Michelle West or George R.R. Martin - and this list goes on - then trust me, you will want to get your hands on this.

The world of Roshar is one of stone and storms. Wild tempests of enormous power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

To say I have been eagerly awaiting my copy of Words of Radiance is an understatement. This work is an immense undertaking that will span another eight volumes (he's contracted for ten books by his publisher for this series), and given the tricks he's learnt from completing Jordan's own epic I am very confident that Sanderson will pull this off without disappointing. Also, given how prolific he is (he's kinda like a writeaholic) our wait between books will - hopefully - not be too long.

Be sure to read Sanderson's answers to our Ten Terrifying Questions below. And if you haven't purchased book one, The Way of Kings, then now is the perfect time for you to do so.

Six years ago, the Assassin in White, a hireling of the inscrutable Parshendi, assassinated the Alethi king on the very night a treaty between men and Parshendi was being celebrated. So began the Vengeance Pact among the highprinces of Alethkar and the War of Reckoning against the Parshendi.

Now the Assassin is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives.

Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl.

Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined.

Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable.

WHAT I'VE BEEN READING
What I've Been Reading: The Dreaming Void. I have embarked without hesitation into Peter F. Hamilton's The Void Trilogy . It is brilliant. I can't believe it has taken me this long to get around to it. Needless to say I do not believe I will be late to a new Hamilton novel again. Part science fiction/part medieval fantasy (but not really -you have to read it to understand) these series is almost like two books in one. Two separate stories that are utterly entwined. It's great!

What I'm currently Reading: I am at this moment making my way through book two of The Void Trilogy, The Temporal Void and re-reading The Way of Kings in preparation for book two - Words of Radiance.

What I'm Reading Next: I am still waiting on Words of Radiance (any day now!) but I am also eyeing Blood of Dragons. I think it's time Robin Hobb and I had a catch up.

By Jo Spurrier

One of Australia's bright new stars Jo Spurrier's sequel to her debut novel Winter Be My Shield doesn't disappoint. Picking up the story Spurrier strides forward expanding on threads where only peripheral in book one and continues to open up the incredible wintry world that is so real your hands will freeze while holding the book.

Many writers can suffer from 'second book syndrome', where in the second book reads like a place-holder for the third/final book in the series. Fear not, you will experience no such lethargy here. Spurrier bursts into  action from page one and doesn't let up as we race forward towards the Demon Spire and the hidden trove of knowledge that the Akharian's are searching for. Characters who were secondary in Winter Be My Shield find their feet in unexpected ways and one villain suddenly becomes more much interesting and sympathetic.

I highly recommend this series, Jo Spurrier is truly a talent the Australian genre scene should be proud of.

Sierra has always battled to control her powers, but now her life and Isidro's depend on keeping her skills hidden from the Akharians as they draw closer to Demon's Spire.

In the relics left by Ricalan's last great mage, Isidro hopes to find the knowledge Sierra needs to master her powers, but instead uncovers his own long-buried talent for magecraft.

When Sierra's untrainable powers turn destructive, she has nowhere to turn for help except to the uncertain mercy of an old enemy. But what will Rasten do when she returns to his hands at last?

Click here for more details or to order THE BOY WITH THE PORCELAIN BLADE
By Den Patrick

Wow. This book impressed me a lot. Hugely atmospheric, it reads like a cross between the gothic feel of Mervyn Peake set within a grotesque caricature of Renaissance Italy. It has a decadent decay within it's pages and is filled with a sense of mystery that is utterly gripping in a fascinating world.

The king is insane and has withdrawn from society to his private Keep. His steward, the Majordomo, rules in his stead, while the Great Houses of the aristocracy hatch plots and jostle for power. And amongst them all are the Orfano, the misshapen 'witchlings' who are abandoned on the nobles' doorsteps at birth.

Our guide into this world of Machiavellian conspiracies and mysteries is Lucien de Fontein, one of the Orfano. Born with no ears, he has grown up hated and feared, and trained in the art of the sword. The novel opens on the day he is to face his Final Testing, which will allow him to graduate from the titular porcelain blade to a steel weapon.

The Boy With The Porcelain Blade alternates between action sequences of Lucien fighting for survival and flashbacks to his youth. Patrick teases out revelations in each flashback and ends every action scene on a cliff-hanger in such way that the novel is always a riveting read.

If you enjoy Scott Lynch, Robin Hobb or Patrick Rothfuss you will be lost in The Boy With The Porcelain . Den Patrick's writing is rich with detail, an ornate style that fits perfectly with the baroque setting, while fast-paced plotting ensures it doesn't get overwhelmed with nuance.

An original and beautifully imagined world, populated by unforgettable characters.

Lucien de Fontein has grown up different. One of the mysterious and misshapen Orfano who appear around the Kingdom of Landfall, he is a talented fighter yet constantly lonely, tormented by his deformity, and well aware that he is a mere pawn in a political game.

Ruled by an insane King and the venomous Majordomo, it is a world where corruption and decay are deeply rooted - but to a degree Lucien never dreams possible when he first discovers the plight of the 'insane' women kept in the haunting Sanatoria.

Told in a continuous narrative interspersed with flashbacks we see Lucien grow up under the care of his tutors. We watch him forced through rigorous Testings, and fall in love, set against his yearning to discover where he comes from, and how his fate is tied to that of every one of the deformed Orfano in the Kingdom, and of the eerie Sanatoria itself.

By Glenda Larke

For those of you who have been patiently waiting for a new novel from Glenda Larke your wait is finally over.

This month sees the release of The Lascar's Dagger, book one of The Forsaken Lands trilogy. Set in a fantasy world that is more akin to the 17th Century in technology and feel than more usual medieval, Larke weaves a cunning tale of religion and the machinations of empire, as great trading fleets discover and exploit new lands.

An absolute master of world building Larke combines the greed for riches to be found in a burgeoning spice trade with native magics and the politcs of religions at war. She has the gift of George R.R. Martin to create an immense world through throw-away lines and character histories that just grows in the background until you are living and breathing a while new world as though you were actually there.

With astounding ease Larke weaves plots twist and turn, and driving tension abounds as characters leap off the page. Glenda Larke is master storyteller. If you have never read her before then you have a load of great books to get through and this is a very good place to start.

Read her. Now.

FAITH WILL NOT SAVE HIM.

Saker looks like a simple priest, but in truth he's a spy for the head of his faith. It's a dangerous job, and more lives than merely his own depend on his secrecy.

When Saker is wounded by a Lascar sailor's blade, the weapon seems to follow him home. Unable to discard it, nor the sense of responsibility that comes with it, Saker can only follow its lead.

It will put him on a journey to strange shores, on a path that will reveal terrible secrets about the empire, about the people he serves, and likely lead to his own destruction.

The Lascar's dagger demands a price, and that price will be paid in blood.

By Sebastien De Castell

Something new and a little different is the debut from Sebastien de Castell

If you like swords and duels and intrigue and betrayal and all for one and one for all you are gonna love this.

De Castell tells his story in a fluid, inviting prose. It is much more a 'classic', adventure-style fantasy mixed with the grittier, darker fantasy of Joe Abercrombie and Mark Lawrence, than the chunky epic fantasy's I normally go for , but a fun read just the same. With its 'musketeers' feel I almost imagine this would be the type of fantasy novel that Dumas might write.

De Castell has a great wit, melding sarcasm and humour, a dashing sense of style, I would hazard a guess, as dangerous skill with the sword as he has with the pen.

Falcio is the first Cantor of the Greatcoats.

Trained in the fighting arts and the laws of Tristia, the Greatcoats are travelling Magisters upholding King's Law.

They are heroes.

Or at least they were, until they stood aside while the Dukes took the kingdom, and impaled their King's head on a spike.

Now Tristia is on the verge of collapse and the barbarians are sniffing at the borders. The Dukes bring chaos to the land, while the Greatcoats are scattered far and wide, reviled as traitors, their legendary coats in tatters. All they have left are the promises they made to King Paelis, to carry out one final mission.

But if they have any hope of fulfilling the King's dream, the divided Greatcoats must reunite, or they will also have to stand aside as they watch their world burn...

by Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson

Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson have thrilled fans of Frank Herbert (Brian's father) by writing these books to piece together the developments by which the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mothers, human-computer Mentats, legendary-warrior Swordmasters and interstellar navigators of the Spacing Guild created the universe of the original Dune.

Herbert and Anderson's tight plotting, swift narration and intriguing characters all manoeuvre against a backdrop that are expertly shaping into the vast, complex, fascinating Dune universe we all know and love.

Gilbertus Albans has founded the Mentat School, a place where humans can learn the efficient techniques of thinking machines.

But Gilbertus walks an uneasy line between his own convictions and compromises in order to survive the Butlerian fanatics, led by the madman Manford Torondo and his Swordmaster Anari Idaho.

Mother Superior Raquella attempts to rebuild her Sisterhood School on Wallach IX, with her most talented and ambitious student, Valya Harkonnen ...who also has another goal-to exact revenge on Vorian Atreides, the legendary hero of the Jihad, whom she blames for her family's downfall. Meanwhile, Josef Venport conducts his own war against the Butlerians.

VenHold Spacing Fleet controls nearly all commerce thanks to the superior mutated Navigators that Venport has created, and he places a ruthless embargo on any planet that accepts Manford Torondo's anti-technology pledge, hoping to starve them into submission. But fanatics rarely surrender easily...

The Mentats, the Navigators, and the Sisterhood all strive to improve the human race, but know that as Butlerian fanaticism grows stronger, the battle will be to choose the path of humanity's future-whether to embrace civilization, or to plunge into an endless dark age.

HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO FOR THE TRUTH?

Ball lightning. Weather balloons. Secret military aircraft. Ryan knows all the justifications for UFO sightings. But when something falls out of the sky on the hills near his small Scottish town, he finds his cynicism can't identify or explain the phenomenon.

And in a future where nothing is a secret, where everything is recorded on CCTV or reported online, why can he find no evidence of the UFO, nor anything to shed light on what occurred? Is it the political revolutionaries, is it the government or is it aliens themselves who are creating the cover-up? Or does the very idea of a cover-up hide the biggest secret of all?

By David Weber

David Weber is like one of the titans of Science Fiction, spreading his work over Space Opera, Military SF, Near Future and even some Fantasy.

Midst Toil and Tribulation is the sixth book in the Safehold series, a massive undertaking of huge tomes that stand easily as the Sci-Fi version of A Game of Thrones . This is truly epic Space Opera. For centuries, the world of Safehold, last redoubt of the human race, lay under the unchallenged rule of the Church of God Awaiting. The Church permitted nothing new-no new inventions, no new understandings of the world.

What no one knew was that the Church was an elaborate fraud-a high-tech system established by a rebel faction of Safehold's founders, meant to keep humanity hidden from the powerful alien race that had destroyed old Earth.

Then awoke Merlyn Athrawes, cybernetic avatar of a warrior a thousand years dead, felled in the war in which Earth was lost. Monk, warrior, counselor to princes and kings, Merlyn has one purpose: to restart the history of the too-long-hidden human race.

And now the fight is thoroughly underway. The island empire of Charis has declared its independence from the Church, and with Merlyn's help has vaulted forward into a new age of steam-powered efficiency. Fending off the wounded Church, Charis has drawn more and more of the countries of Safehold to the cause of independence and self-determination. But at a heavy cost in bloodshed and loss-a cost felt by nobody more keenly that Merlyn Athrawes.

The wounded Church is regrouping. Its armies and resources are vast. The fight for humanity's future isn't over, and won't be over soon...

BRANDON SANDERSON ANSWERS TEN TERRIFYING QUESTIONS
Click here to view Brandon Sanderson's author page1. To begin with why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself - where were you born? Raised? Schooled?

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, right in the middle of the United States. The closest you would think of it to would be where Dorothy starts in the Wizard of Oz-Kansas. Nebraska's pretty similar, though I was in a more urban area than that. Everybody always imagines me with the cows and the cornfields-and there were cows and cornfields, but there was also a city there. It was a great place to live. A little out in the middle of nowhere, but it's not like I'm a small-town boy, although I'm not a big-city boy either. I'm kind of suburban middle-America stock.

2. What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why?

When I was twelve I had no idea what I wanted to be, and this was a point of great discomfort and worry to me because I was beginning to think I should want to be something.

By eighteen I wanted to be a writer. The transformation happened when I was fourteen and I read a book called Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly . So by eighteen I was soundly in the "I'm going to be a writer somehow" stage, but my mother managed to convince me that writers don't make any money and that I should go to school in chemistry so I could be a doctor and write on the side. I applied to university as a chemistry student, which I lasted one year before I changed to English.

At thirty, I had sold my first book, and all I wanted at that point was to be able to continue to write books and make a living at it. I didn't want the first book to flop. By thirty I knew I was going to have a shot at being a writer. I didn't know if that shot was going to pan out or not.

Click here for more details or to order3. What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you do not have now?

A lot of writers talk about being trapped at a certain age. They'll write for teens and say that they identify most with that age group, for example. I joke that I was born forty, and even though I haven't quite hit forty yet, I've always felt old. I don't know what that says about me, but the trick is remembering myself at eighteen.

Perhaps the most shocking thing I remember at eighteen is this: I'd done very well in school all through my life without really trying. I thought college would be about the same. And then I discovered-as many bright, young individuals do-that college isn't the same as high school. You actually have to work! I had a pretty rough first semester.

4. What were three works of art - book or painting or piece of music, etc - you can now say, had a great effect on you and influenced your own development as a writer?

I'm surprised at how much reading Les Misérables as a high school student has affected me as a writer. It is a fantastic piece.

When I was a teenager, I had a book called The Art of Michael Whelan. I would flip through it and imagine stories for the pieces of art, particularly the pieces in the Passage sequence. Years and years later, pieces of those stories I imagined are still popping up in books that I'm writing.

I was poor as a college student, but I didn't want to pirate music. So I listened to a lot of video game music, particularly through a website called OverClocked Remix, where they do cool remixes and symphonic interpretations of video game music. There are a few pieces there like one called "Metal Gear May Cry" that I was writing a lot of my books to during the years I was trying to break in. I would point you toward those. They're pretty awesome.

5. Considering the innumerable artistic avenues open to you, why did you choose to write a novel?

There weren't multiple artistic avenues open to me. I've played an instrument, I've taken visual arts classes, and none of them have had the same spark as writing. I discovered books and writing, and something changed inside of me because something about those fantasy novels touched me in a way that nothing else ever has.

Click here for more details or to order 6. Please tell us about your latest novel 'Words of Radiance'

Words of Radiance is the sequel to The Way of Kings. Each book of the Stormlight Archive I want to focus on one character really deeply. Now, the other characters will appear, will have great storylines and plots, but I'm going to do a flashback sequence with each character, showing their past and who they are, and so this book is Shallan's book. Shallan is an artist and a natural historian who has some tendencies toward deception, which we found out in the first book, where she had not been completely 100% truthful with the person who was mentoring her. In fact, she was planning to rob her. The second book has how Shallan came to that place and who she is, her history, her coming into her own as a character. It is a big, thick wonderful epic fantasy filled with artwork and all sorts of interesting adaptations of the epic fantasy form, which is my attempt to see what I can do and where I can go with a fantasy novel.

7. What do you hope people take away with them after reading your work?

I hope that they get the same sense that I got in reading my favourite books when I first discovered the genre. I still get this, but it's more rare-that sense of wonder and satisfaction, where you put the book down and say, "Wow. That experience was a delight."

Click here for more details or to order8. Whom do you most admire in the realm of writing and why?

I admire two writers greatly right now. Terry Pratchett because I very much admire his ability to blend philosophy, strong characterization, and humour in a way I've never seen anyone do before. Usually when someone writes humour, they skimp in the other areas. They don't have strong characters or the books are simply silly with no meaning, and Pratchett is able to do it all; I am in awe of his ability to do that. The other author I admire a great deal is Guy Gavriel Kay . I admire his workmanship, the beauty of his prose, and his ability to do very new and different things with the fantasy genre, using depth of worldbuilding inspired by various Earth cultures in a way that I don't think anyone else is doing.

9. Many artists set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?

My ambitious goal is to finish The Stormlight Archive-a ten-book series-in a way that it doesn't lose steam, get sidetracked, or feel like the middle-to-late books are weaker than the opening books. This is something that is a difficulty for long-form epic fantasy series, and it's a challenge I wish to meet.

Click here for more details or to order 10. What advice do you give aspiring writers?

The most important thing you can do is to just practice your writing. A lot of people say that they want to be writers, but then you ask how many books they have completed, and they have not written any. They've started a bunch. You want to be a writer? Spend your time writing. Learn what works for you. I would point you toward Writing Excuses, my online writing advice show, in which I give much more in-depth advice. My university lectures are also posted online.
