Young Adult Fiction is on fire right now! Suddenly we're awash in exciting new releases. The pile of books beside my bed has taken on an alarming resemblance to The Leaning Tower of Pisa and will most likely end up crushing me to death. But you know what? I don't even care because ... books!

This month we have offerings from some of the most popular authors in the genre such as Lauren Oliver, Claudia Gray and Tehereh Mafi - as well as Australian favourite, Jaclyn Moriarty.

We also have a whole slew of big name authors like Kathy Reichs, David Baldacci and Elizabeth George. These guys are all well known Crime authors who have each proven their genre-switching chops writing for Young Adults.

Last but not least, this month brings us a wide range of stunning debuts. So many talented new additions to the genre (namely Sally Green and Leslye Walton).  Really, I'm loving everything this year has offered us in Young Adult Fiction so far.

PLUS: Buy a copy of Joanne M. Harris' The Gospel of Loki before March 30th to go in the draw to win a signed limited edition hardcover proof copy for you or a friend.

Ooh, and buy Angelfall by Susan Ee, before March 30th to go into the draw to win one of 5 signed copies of the sequel World After!

Keep it coming, 2014!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Click here to order HALF BAD
by Sally Green

Every so often you hear about a book that's being touted as a "global sensation". Usually in such cases the film rights have been snapped up before the book has even been published, the author is often described as "the next J.K Rowling" and the general consensus seems to be OMG this is it! The New Craze! The Next Big Thing! And so on, and so forth. We've heard it all before, right?

And yet it doesn't seem to matter how many times I hear it, whenever a book like this comes along I get caught up in the hype. My expectations soar to ridiculous heights. I find myself thinking, "This book is going to change my life! It will blow my mind and rock my world. It will save the rainforests and end world poverty! God bless this miraculous book!"

Of course, I'm nearly always disappointed.

It's not the book's fault. No book could ever live up to such high expectations. However Half Bad by Sally Green might just be the exception to this rule.

I'm almost reluctant to give a synopsis of Half Bad.
Anything I say is only going to make it sound like a re-telling of Harry Potter. The truth is, comparisons to Harry Potter are unavoidable here. Both books are about teenaged boys with magical powers. Both boys have suffered tragic pasts and find themselves burdened by unwanted notoriety.

And yet despite the obvious similarities, Half Bad is in fact a fresh and imaginative take on a familiar theme.
At no point does it come off clichéd or unoriginal. Instead, it's a gripping page turner set in a very convincing world and starring a complex and compelling main character.

Will Half Bad live up to the hype and become the next big craze? I can't really say for sure. These things can be hard to predict. What I can say is that Half Bad will not disappoint. I completely understand why people are so excited about this new trilogy
and I'lll be glad to see it capture the hearts and mind of a new generation of teens.

Blurb:
In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and fifteen-year-old Nathan, who is both.

Nathan's father is the world's most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides. Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his sixteenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch-or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust-not even family, not even the girl he loves?

In the tradition of Patrick Ness and Markus Zusak, is a gripping tale of alienation and the indomitable will to survive, a story that will grab hold of you and not let go until the very last page.

MARCH PICKS
by Lauren Oliver

Lauren Oliver, best selling author of the Delirium trilogy, is back this month with a nail-biting thriller bound to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Panic
is an intense read. It's also a stand-alone novel, which brings joy into my heart. In this world packed full of book trilogies and movie franchises, it's a relief to come across a solid stand-alone story with a satisfying conclusion. You will find no cllffhanger endings here! Although, the book does happen to begin with someone jumping off a cliff ...

How's that for a teaser?

Blurb: Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a poverty-stricken town of twelve thousand people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high but the potential payoff is even higher. She'd never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game; he's sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he's not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, the possibility of first love for each of them - and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

In this gritty, spellbinding novel, bestselling author Lauren Oliver delivers a gripping narrative of friendship, courage, survival, and hope.

Click here to orderTHE STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL SORROWS OF AVA LAVENDER
by Leslye Walton

WARNING! This book is not for the faint of heart. It will play merry havoc with your emotions. It will charm and beguile you, only to turn around and rip your soul to shreds. It will devastate and delight you in equal measure.

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrow of of Ava Lavender is a truly astonishing debut. It's the kind of book you will devour in one sitting and then spend weeks afterwards trying to figure out how you feel about it. Is it the best book you have ever read, or does it make you wish you were never born so you could avoid the heartbreak of reading it? It's a tough call.

Proceed with caution...

Blub: Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.

Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava - in all other ways a normal girl - is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naive to the twisted motives of others.

Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the summer solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava's quest and her family's saga build to a devastating crescendo.

First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

Click here to order THE GOSPEL OF LOKI
by Joanne M. Harris

Buy a copy of Joanne M. Harris' The Gospel of Loki before March 30th to go in the draw to win a signed limited edition hardcover proof copy for you or a friend.

Norse mythology is so hot right now. We can thank Marvel for that. The Thor movies have introduced us to a muscle-bound Chris Hemsworth as the mighty God of Thunder, and the impossibly charismatic Tom Hiddleston as  Loki - The Trickster God.

All things considered, this really is the perfect time for internationally renowned author Joanne M. Harris to publish a book recounting all of Loki's many and varied misadventures.

By far and away the most wonderful thing about The Gospel of Loki is the voice Joanne M. Harris has given her delightfully immoral anti-hero. I'm not always a great fan of first person narrative but I have to make an exception for  The Gospel of Loki because this is how first person narration should be done! Loki's character shines through in every line, dripping sarcasm, twinkling with mischief and humming with that special kind of unrepentant arrogance so often found in archetypal "trickster" characters like Robin Goodfellow and Peter Pan.

This is a character who, when asked if he can achieve the impossible, routinely replies, "Of course. I'm Loki." He's gloriously conceited, packed full of swagger and playful cheek. He's a lovable villain, a mischievous bad-boy, a fiendish puppet master who knows just how to manipulate people. It doesn't take much. Just a whisper into someone's ear, a well-timed and seemingly offhand comment and voila! Disaster ensues!

And yet, the true genius of Harris' Loki is that he is so dammed lovable. Despite his inherent wickedness, you just can't help rooting for him.

Harris gives us a Loki who is constantly mistreated by his fellow gods. Always an outsider, always rejected, always everybody's convenient scapegoat.  This of course makes him the ultimate underdog. No matter how evil his plots become, or what depths of wickedness he sinks to, the reader cannot help cheering him on because ... well ... he's Loki.

AT THE MOVIES
by Veronica Ross

It's been a long wait for the fans, but at last the time has come. The Divergent movie is hitting cinemas this April!

If you're somehow unaware of the massively popular, bestselling Divergent series, allow me to enlighten you. Here's what you need to know:

In a dystopian version of Chicago, people are  separated into five different factions. Each faction embraces a way of life based on rigorously controlled character traits and values.

Those belonging to the Dauntless faction are fearless adrenaline junkies. The Abnegation faction takes selflessness to a whole new level. People in Candor always tell the truth, while Erudite is a faction full of super-smart nerdy types. As for the Amity Folk, they're basically happy-clappy hippies who love everyone.

Are you following me so far?

Now our heroine, Tris Prior, has a secret that no-one must ever find out. She possesses character traits from more than one faction. This makes her Divergent. She cannot be pigeonholed because she's a wildcard, an unpredictable free-thinking rebel who cannot be defined. In other words, she's awesome!

The Divergent trilogy came to a dramatic end last year with the release of the final book, Allegiant. Fans will understand what I mean when I say that reading  Allegiant is like the mental equivalent of being kicked in the face ... except in a good way. It's a pretty shocking book, is what I'm saying. This series is very intense and I can't wait to see how Tris's story plays out on the big screen.

Also, it must be said, I'm looking forward to see Theo James in the role of Four (AKA Tobias). I mean, wow. That's some genius casting right there.

Now come on! Does that not look amazing? And what a stellar cast, including well-known stars like Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd and Maggie Q - as well as a whole crop of talented young up-and-comers like Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller.

Divergent
is due for release in Australia on the 10th of April.

Side Effects May Vary is a tender and witty novel about life and death, love and friendship - written with unflinching honestly.

Blurb: When sixteen-year-old Alice is diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, she vows to spend her final months righting wrongs. So she convinces her best friend Harvey, who's loved her forever, to help with compiling a crazy 'just-dying-to-do' bucket list, that's as much about revenge as it is about redemption.

But just when Alice's scores are settled, she goes into remission. Now she must face the consequences of all she's said and done and discover just what happens when we say our 'final' words, only to find that life isn't through with us yet.

Here it is! The highly anticipated conclusion to The Juliette Chronicles!

Now, okay, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Hmmmm. The cover of that book is very ... interesting."

Yes. I can't argue with that. .

You'll just have to trust me when I say this is definitely one of those times when you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. This series is extremely popular and with good reason. It's an action-packed dysptopian adventure, loaded with mega-swoony romance. Absolutely perfect for fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent.

Blurb: With Omega Point destroyed, Juliette doesn't know if the rebels, her friends, or even Adam are alive.

But that won't keep her from trying to take down The Reestablishment once and for all. Now she must rely on Warner, the handsome commander of Sector 45. The one person she never thought she could trust. The same person who saved her life. He promises to help Juliette master her powers and save their dying world ... but that's not all he wants with her.
