BUZZ IN BRIEF
What are the odds that in one month you suddenly find two new book titles featuring birds? (And neither book is actually about birds at all!) April is an unpredictable month of transition between seasons, so watch out for some surprises including a contemporary reworking of Jane Austen and a gripping portrait of a city experiencing convulsing change. Just when you think you know the world you live in, writers come along and tip everything upside down, making it all so much more interesting.

Kind Regards

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Click here for more details or to order CAPITAL: A PORTRAIT OF TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY DELHI
by Rana Dasgupta

Caroline Baum: I consider Suketu Mehta's Maximum City, a portrait of Mumbai, to be one of the most thrilling books I have ever read about a city. I did not expect it be matched by a portrait of a place many people describe as dull and charmless: the Canberra of India is one expression I've heard when it comes to Delhi. Well, this book changes all that. Gripping, shocking, intoxicating, it captures the rapid change that is turning India upside down, often with alarming consequences. The chapter on the hospital system is truly terrifying and a cautionary tale about greed and corruption for anyone involved in public health. A riveting read.

Caroline Baum: Oh, how I wish this book had existed when I was navigating the stormy water of being a stepmother!  There is wise and comforting advice in this book, no matter what configuration of family you may find yourself in: whether facing hostile ex-wives, or a grieving husband or kids who don't like you. Ten personal stories that come with calm, sensible tips make this a real sanity saver.

by Kate Ceberano

Caroline Baum: She sure is. Kate Ceberano's career has had its fair share of ups and down. She disappeared from view for several years leaving fans like myself feeling a little bereft. Was it her crossover repertoire (from pop to jazz and back again) that confused recording labels as some suggested? The truth is more complex and interesting as she reveals in this candid memoir. It really communicates her energy and passion for performance, her positive philosophy of pick yourself up and start over, and her willingness to try anything. There's also some good stuff about body image and her relationship with her mother when faced with a family secret. It's great to see her back enjoying the success she deserves.

MEMOIR

by Alex Monroe

Caroline Baum: It's rare to read a book by a jeweller. My liking for puns makes me want to call this one a gem. Sorry.

What makes this book so enchanting is that its author, who clearly has a talent when it comes to making exquisite, delicate gold birds, feathers and flowers worn around the necks of his fashionable British and European clientele, also has a genuine aptitude for memoir. His memories of an imaginative, unconventional country childhood are English eccentric at its best. From his earliest days, Monroe had the urge to make things - often using dangerous material to comic and disastrous effect.

AUSTRALIAN FICTION
Click here for more details or to order THE EMPRESS LOVER
by Linda Jaivin

Caroline Baum: Anything that Linda Jaivin writes about China is worth reading. For my money, I prefer her essays to her fiction. Her latest offering is a peculiar hybrid. It's a novel but with many digressions into history and journalistic asides. It is a sort of speculation or confection, a meandering hallway of Chinese whispers.

Shifting between the 1940s and today, it tells the story of an effete scholar who may or may not have been the lover of the Empress Dowager of China, and that of Linnie, an Australian woman who works as a translator  subtitling films in Beijing (which Jaivin herself has done).

Rich with cultural detail and comment, the book  displays Jaivin's enthusiasm and curiosity for the secrets and untold stories of Imperial China and the foreigners who become entangled in its labyrinthine web of intrigue. Her approach is playful, chaotic, disorienting, rich with atmospherics, even if somewhat short on plot. But maybe getting lost is the point.

JANE AUSTEN
Click here for more details or to order NORTHANGER ABBEY
by Val McDermid

Caroline Baum: Well now, this is a bit of fun.

For the second instalment of the Austen project (the first was Joanna Trollope on Sense and Sensibility) British crime writer McDermid injects a very contemporary spirit into Austen's first comedy of manners. Set at the time of the Edinburgh Festival when the city is full of visitors and bustle, she transforms Austen's Catherine Morland into the more modern Cat, a shy girl with an over active imagination.

McDermid updates the gothic elements of Austen's original with the current on-trend fascination for vampires. And while Austen's Catherine had to wait for letters to keep pace with the goings-on of the Tinleys and Thorpes, everything here is speeded up with  fast cars instead of carriages and text messages instead of hand delivered notes. It works.

Caroline Baum: What a fascinating moment Sebastian Barry has chosen to capture in this enigmatic novel about doomed love. Jack McNulty is an Irishman with a commission in the British Army during WW2. A decade later, in his lodgings in Accra, he writes his story in order to understand it. The setting gives him an opportunity to observe colonialism through two lenses while contemplating his tumultuous and tragic marriage. A complex, internal and melancholy novel.

POIGNANT AND POWERFUL

by Willy Vlautin

Caroline Baum: A marvellous companion to last year's The Yellow Birds, this is a superb piece of writing about the impact of PTSD on a young US Iraq war veteran. Everyone in these stories is wounded in some way, from the soldier recovering in hospital after a failed attempt to take his own life, to the nurse who cares for him. But small acts of kindness and quiet compassion offer glimpses of hope in an otherwise heartbreaking portrait of a nation's damaged and forgotten people. Poignant and powerful realism.

by Kevin Powers

A beautiful and moving collection of poetry from Kevin Powers, author of The Yellow Birds.

In this remarkable debut poetry collection, National Book Award finalist and Iraq war veteran Kevin Powers creates a startling, affecting portrait of a life shaped by war. Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting captures the many moments that comprise a soldier's life: driving down the Texas highway; waiting for the unknown in the dry Iraq heat; writing a love letter; listening to a mother recount her dreams. Written with honesty and insight, these poems strive to make sense of war and its echoes through human experience.

Just as The Yellow Birds was hailed as the 'first literary masterpiece produced by the Iraq war,' this collection will prove to be a powerful, enduring classic. (Los Angeles Times).

by Krystal Barter

The inspiring story of how a young woman defied a family cancer curse to save herself and offer the gift of hope to thousands of other women.

'I feel lucky I was born with cancer in my DNA. Crazy as it sounds, I consider myself lucky that, when I was just twenty-two years old, I discovered I had a ninety per cent chance of developing breast cancer: the same, insidious disease that had attacked my Mum, and my Nan before her and my Great-Grandma before her.'

Krystal Barter is an extraordinary young woman: a fighter, a survivor, a wife, a mother and a crusader. She was born with the breast cancer gene, a hereditary curse that has run through generation after generation in her family, claiming at least twenty of her close relatives. But unlike them, Krystal was able to take the BRCA1 gene test, and found out the more...

by Matt Taibbi

America's muckraking moral conscience takes on his most important story yet. Written with forensic zeal and righteous rage, this is an exploration of an unprecedented wealth gap that is not just changing the U.S.'s economic life, but transforming the meaning of rights, justice, and basic citizenship.

The wealthy 1 per cent operate with near impunity, protected by their class and their system; however large and outrageous their crimes, they are rarely charged and rarely jailed. Meanwhile, everyone else finds their very existence the subject of massive law-enforcement attention - from stop-and-frisk programs and the immigrant dragnet, to invasive surveillance and the abuse of debtors.

Driven by immersive reporting, this is a stunning, enraging look into the more...

There was a place far worse than Changi - this is the little known story of Singapore's Outram Road and the POWs who endured it.

'It made Changi seem like heaven.'

There was a place far worse than Changi - Singapore's Outram Road Gaol. Deprivation here was so extreme that there really was a fate worse than death.

Stubborn Buggers is the story of twelve Australian POWs who endured and survived the Thai-Burma Railway and Sandakan and then the unimaginable hardships of Outram Road Gaol. It is a story of how they dealt with the brutality of the Japanese military police, the feared Kempeitai. And it is the story of how they found a way to go on living even when facing a future of no hope and slow death.

But Stubborn Buggers is about more...

by Jessica Shirvington

What if a microchip could identify your perfect match? What if it could be used against you and the ones you love? Eight years ago, Mercer Corporation's M-Bands became mandatory. An evolution of the smartphone, the bracelets promised an easier life.

Instead, they have come to control it. Two years ago, Maggie Stevens watched helplessly as one of the people she loved most was taken from her, shattering her world as she knew it. Now, Maggie is ready. And Quentin Mercer - heir to the M-Corp empire - has become key to Maggie's plan. But as the pieces of her dangerous design fall into place, could Quentin's involvement destroy everything she's fought for? In a world full of broken promises, the ones Maggie must keep could be the most heartbreaking.

Cath and Wren are identical twins, and until recently they did absolutely everything together. She's horribly shy and has always buried herself in the fan fiction she writes, where she always knows exactly what to say and can write a romance far more intense than anything she's experienced in real life.
