Welcome to the July Science Fiction and Fantasy Buzz
Even the best laid plans often go astray. Or just change. Such is the case with Brandon Sanderson's proposed trilogy, White Sands. The outlined novels are being re-jigged to graphic novel format. I'll be keeping my eye out for that (yes, I know he hasn't finished The Stormlight Archives - he's actually very good at multi-tasking. Seriously.)

In the wake of HBO's success with Game of Thrones, more and more fantasy/science fiction novels are being optioned for development. The latest rumoured option being for Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora. When asked about the rumour Scott said: "I can neither confirm nor deny the denial or confirmation of anything potentially requiring denial or confirmation." Okay...

Another option taken up has been for Richard Morgan's SF novel Black Man  as a feature film by the team responsible for Johnny Depp's movie Transcendence. If it gets into production this could be really good.

Last but not least, this month sees the exciting publication of book one in Aussie Alan Baxter's new urban fantasy/martial arts-fest series, Bound . Alan also subjected himself to our Ten Terrifying questions below!

Kind regards,

By Alan Baxter

Mark says: Bound is an entertaining and driven urban fantasy thriller from Aussie Alan Baxter, full of martial arts, magic and monsters.

This is the first book in a series of indeterminate length (although I believe he's been contracted for 3 books so far).

Baxter takes us on a roller-coaster ride as the world Alex Caine, our hero, knows changes before his eyes when he is unwittingly introduced to the world of magic that hides in the shadows all around us. Becoming bound to an ancient and malevolent power the learning curve that Alex is thrust upon is excruciatingly steep and the pages fly as we are dragged tightly - and willingly - behind him, crossing the globe as he searches for a way to rid himself of the 'curse' and to find his centre in a suddenly unrecognisable world.

This is a page-turning dark fantasy that doesn't shy away from sex, violence and the underbelly of society. Filled with guts, passion, and the will to survive Baxter has delivered a great romp of a novel and I'm looking forward to see where he takes Alex Caine next.

WHAT I'VE BEEN READING
What I've Been Reading: Unwrapped Sky, a debut by aussie Rjurik Davidson is a dreamy blend of steampunk and mythology in a vast and sprawling city that is a hotbed of cultural clashing, political machinations and a war between the ruling Houses. It's a story of layers that I am sure I will get something new out of each time I read it. Davidson is one to watch.

What I'm Reading Now: Fool's Assassin by Robin Hobb. It's fantastic! I'll be talking more about it next month, but in the mean time checkout my Robin Hobb Spotlight  below.

What I am Reading Next: Cast in Flame by Michelle Sagara - as soon as it arrives!

FANTASY

By Michelle Sagara

Mark says: Michelle Sagara is, for me, one of those authors who goes right to the top of my 'to read' list. In fact she usually knocks whatever I am reading when one her books comes out, right out of my hands and engrosses me completely until the journey is over.

I am counting the days until this one comes out.

Sagara writes captivating and complex characters and puts them in a world rich with wonder. She has a way of tugging the heart strings and crafting stories that dig deep by driving them off the back of fast-paced police procedural surface stories. I say surface because these stories do not last longer than the book they first appear in and are the dressing (although still important) for a larger story arc that runs through all of the books like a good television series. One that has deadly magic, five very different humanoid races in an uneasy 'peace' and dry, dry humour.

Blurb: Any day that starts with dragon arguments is going to be bad

By Joe Abercrombie

Mark says: Joe Abercrombie. Need I say more? Seriously?

Abercrombie is just that good and has built for himself a solid reputation as a master of grim noir fantasy. Now he's branching out into what has technically been called a 'Young Adult' novel. But it's Joe Abercrombie, so don't let that label fool you.

It's a Viking story, a coming-of-age tale, a soap opera and a tale of revenge.

It's brilliant!

Blurb: "I swore an oath to avenge the death of my father. I may be half a man, but I swore a whole oath."

Prince Yarvi has vowed to regain a throne he never wanted. But first he must survive cruelty, chains, and the bitter waters of the Shattered Sea. And he must do it all with only one good hand.

The deceived will become the deceiver.

Born a weakling in the eyes of his father, Yarvi is more...

By Wen Spencer

Mark says: I first came across Wen Spencer's work when I picked up her amazing book Tinker.

She introduced me to a near-future, alternate-history, urban-fantasy... and some of the best world-building and complex cultural history I have come across outside of the best big epic fantasy authors.

Eight Million Gods is a wonderful mix of Japanese mythology, spy thriller, urban fantasy, culture shock and cosplay.

This is an erratic and crazy jumble that matches the character of Nikki, Spencer's heroine, perfectly for where Spencer excels is in her attention to detail. She crafts webs that tangle and interlock and draw you along into an amazing whodunit tale of magic and madness.

Try her now! (And the Elfhome series, start here)

Blurb: One Saturday afternoon, Nikki Delany thought, "George Wilson, in the kitchen, with a blender." By dinner, she had killed George and posted his gory murder to her blog. The next day, she put on her mourning clothes and went out to meet her best friend for lunch to discuss finding a more...

By Anthony Ryan

Mark says: In Blood Song, Anthony Ryan introduced us to a medieval world of warring faiths and secret magic. Now this epic tale continues as Vaelin Al Sorna discovers that there is no escape from the call of destiny...

Blurb: "The blood-song rose with an unexpected tune, a warm hum mingling recognition with an impression of safety. He had a sense it was welcoming him home."

Vaelin Al Sorna, warrior of the Sixth Order, called Darkblade, called Hope Killer. The greatest warrior of his day, and witness to the greatest defeat of his nation: King Janus's vision of a Greater Unified Realm drowned in the blood of brave men fighting for a cause Vaelin alone knows was forged from a lie. Sick at heart, he comes home, determined to kill no more. SPOTLIGHT
Click here for more details or to order In anticipation of the first book in the new Fitz and the Fool Trilogy - due out in August - Robin Hobb's publishers have repackaged the Farseer Trilogy and The Tawny Man Trilogy to match Fool's Assassin.

Fans have waited patiently - for the most part - for eleven years to get this new tale of the assassin FitzChivalry and his dear friend the white prophet known as the Fool. So you should totally get to reading the books that began the legend (if you haven't already).

Luckily each trilogy is complete - I can tell you when I got to the end of Royal Assassin (book two of the Farseer Trilogy) I was beside myself that I had to wait for book three to come out! Check them out below.

By Hannu Rajaniemi

Mark says: Hannu Rajaniemi is a very exciting talent. Unlike a lot of space operas that wade through today's market like ponderous and weighty leviathans, Rajamiemi's work is sleek and daring, cutting through the water like the dorsal fin of a great white. He is a seriously good writer, one who reminds me - stylistically at least - of Steven Erikson.... but in science fiction rather than epic fantasy. Although his work is indeed fantastical!

If you are new to Rajaniemi you should start with The Quantum Thief , but I warn you, you will feel like Alice having just stepped through the Looking Glass.

Blurb:With his infectious love of storytelling in all its forms, his rich characterisation and his unrivalled grasp of thrillingly bizarre cutting-edge science, Hannu Rajaniemi has swiftly set a new benchmark for SF in the 21st century. And now with his third novel he completes the tale of his gentleman rogue, the many lives and minds of more...

TWENTY YEARS following the disappearance of the infamous Ishiguro - the first manned spacecraft to travel deeper into space than ever before - humanity are setting their sights on the heavens once more.

Under the direction of two of the most brilliant minds science has ever seen - that of identical twin brothers Tomas and Mirakel Hyvonen - this spacecraft has a bold mission: to study what is being called 'the anomaly' - a vast blackness of space into which the Ishiguro disappeared.

Between them Tomas (on the ground, guiding the mission from the command centre) and Mira (on the ship, with the rest of the hand-picked crew) are leaving nothing to chance. But soon these two scientists are to learn that there are some things in space beyond our understanding.

As the anomaly begins to test the limits of Mira's comprehension - and his sanity - will Tomas be able to save his brother from being lost in space too?

ALAN BAXTER ANSWERS TEN TERRIFYING QUESTIONS
Alan Baxter 1. To begin with why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself - where were you born? Raised? Schooled?

Born on the mean streets of the border city, raised in the fighting arenas of the Fifth Conglomerate and schooled by the courtesan ladies of the western reaches.

Oh, you mean really? Born and raised (and schooled) in Britain, but I didn't really learn anything until I travelled the world.

2. What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why?

At 12 I wanted to be a marine biologist. At 18 I wanted to be a martial arts instructor. At 30 I wanted to be (and was) a martial arts instructor and a writer. Still doing those things and trying to get better at them all the time.

3. What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you do not have now?

That we would all be travelling in flying cars by the time I was 30. Stupid science. Also, replicants.

4. What were three big events - in the family circle or on the world stage or in your reading life, for example - you can now say, had a great effect on you and influenced you in your career path?

The death of my brother when I was 16. Discovering amazing comic books like Sandman and Hellblazer in my teens. Realising a huge majority of the human population are pretty f--ked up individuals.

5. Considering the innumerable electronic media avenues open to you - blogs, online newspapers, TV, radio, etc - why have you chosen to write a book? aren't they obsolete?

Absolutely not. There has never been a better and more exciting time to write great stories. All those things you mentioned above only enhance the spread of excellent books. People will always want to read good stories - the vessel or medium by which they're delivered is not the relevant part.

6. Please tell us about your latest book BOUND

Click here for more details or to orderIt's the story of Alex Caine, a fighter by trade, is drawn into a world he never knew existed - a world he wishes he'd never found.

Alex is a martial artist fighting in illegal cage matches. His powerful secret weapon is an unnatural vision that allows him to see his opponents' moves before they know their intentions themselves.

An enigmatic Englishman, Patrick Welby, approaches Alex after a fight and reveals, 'I know your secret.' Welby shows Alex how to unleash a breathtaking realm of magic and power, drawing him into a mind-bending adventure beyond his control. And control is something Alex values above all else.

A cursed grimoire binds Alex to Uthentia, a chaotic Fey godling, who leads him towards destruction and murder, an urge Alex finds harder and harder to resist. Befriended by Silhouette, a monstrous Kin beauty, Alex sets out to recover the only things that will free him - the shards of the Darak. But that powerful stone also has the potential to unleash a catastrophe which could mean the end of the world as we know it.

7. What do you hope people take away with them after reading your work?

First and foremost, I want them to be entertained by a ripping yarn. That's really all I can ask for (especially if they recommend it to family and friends!) Beyond that, if people get to thinking about the world, how they perceive it and how other people see it, that would be cool.

8. Whom do you most admire and why?

Anyone who does what they want to do, without hurting others. Anyone who strives and works hard for their dreams, and who are kind and considerate about it, not treading on other people to get their way. Those are the people who change the world for the better.

9. Many people set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?

Oh, I have a huge list! I want to win a Hugo and a Nebula and an Aurealis award. I want to be on the New York Times bestseller list, lots of times. I want to be Guest of Honour at a Worldcon. I want to sell millions of books. Honestly, if you don't aim for the highest goals, you're cheating yourself. But along the way, I want to keep writing and hopefully people will keep reading.

10. What advice do you give aspiring writers?

Write. Don't think about writing, don't aspire to write, don't tell everyone how you want or plan to be a writer. WRITE! And then, don't give up. Determination is a large part of the battle. Keep writing, keep submitting, keep working all the time to get better. Write and never give up.

Alan, thank you for playing.
