The biggest news in YA Fiction at the moment is the teaser trailer for the next Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay Part 1. Originally scheduled to drop on the 28th of June, a pirated copy of the trailer was leaked online. GASP!

The Internet exploded earlier this week with fuzzy
footage and blurry stills of the Mockingjay trailer. Hours later, all evidence of the leak was magically erased from both Twitter and Tumblr. I can only assume the person responsible for the leak has been arrested and/or executed.

Lionsgate has now gone ahead and released the official trailer in all it's stunning HD glory. Click here to see what all the fuss is about.

Happy reading!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Click here to order THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING
by Erika Johansen

Sarah says: The Queen of the Tearling is amaaaaazing! I quite literally lost an entire night's sleep over this book. I picked it up one evening  and the the next thing I knew I was reading the last page and sunrise was glimmering on the horizon. Birds were singing and everything. It was horrible.

And yet, in spite of suffering extreme exhaustion, I have no regrets. Sleep is crucial for survival, it's true, but sometimes reading is more important.

The Queen of the Tearling is a grand and epic tale about a young queen struggling to take control of her kingdom. Our heroine, Kelsea Glynn, is one of the most engaging characters I have encountered in quite some time. She's not your typical  princess. She isn't pretty or charming or sweet. But she doesn't exactly fit the mould of a kickass warrior queen either. At least, not to begin with.

Blunt, bold, stubborn and socially awkward, Kelsea is one of those characters who is as lovable for their faults as for their virtues. She's also described as overweight and sort of butch - which is hilarious considering Emma Waston has signed on to play Kelsea in the upcoming movie adaptation (BTW, there is a movie in the works. Of course.)

Now, Emma Watson is a lot of things. Talented. Articulate. Stylish. Probably magical. But butch? I don't know. I can't imagine her in the role of Kelsea but I'm sure she'll nail it.

Queen of the Tearling has the feel of a sweeping historical drama, as well as the magic and mystery of traditional fantasy. Perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore, Tamora Pierce and Sarah J. Maas.

Blurb:
Kelsea Glynn is the sole heir to the throne of Tearling but has been raised in secret by foster parents after her mother - Queen Elyssa, as vain as she was stupid - was murdered for ruining her kingdom

JULY PICKS
Click here to order THE WINNER'S CURSE
by Marie Rutkoski

Sarah says: The Winner's Curse is the first book in what promises to be great new series. It's got a similar vibe to Queen of the Tearling in that it reads a bit like historical fiction but set in a fantasy realm. It also has a distinct Games of Thrones flavour, which obviously means that it's awesome and I couldn't put it down.

So basically, if you like reading about slave rebellions and political intrigue with a dash of forbidden love - you're bound to adore The Winner's Curse.

Perfect for fans of YA fantasy series like Throne of Glass and The Seven Kingdoms.

Click here to order SEARCHING FOR SKY
by Jillian Cantor

Sarah says: Sky and River were raised on a deserted island, completely isolated from the world. And then one day a boat comes to "rescue" them. Suddenly Sky is separated from River and thrust into a harsh and unfamiliar world.

For anyone who has read Emma Donoghue's Room, this book is similar in that it explores the modern world through the eyes of a narrator who has led an unnaturally sheltered life. Sky is heartbreakingly innocent and her story is both tragic and uplifting. I enjoyed Searching for Sky so much that I'm ordering myself a copy of Jillian Cantor's earlier novel, Margot.

by Rachael Craw

Sarah says: Spark is the first book an a refreshingly original new series. The premise is honestly unlike anything I've read before and difficult to explain. In a nutshell, it's all about a bunch of genetically engineered bodyguards trying to protect people from genetically engineered assassins. There is an evil corporation behind everything, a best friend in need of protection, a whole lot of family secrets and best of all, a strong, gutsy heroine with a dreamy love interest.

Perfect for fans of Vampire Academy and Divergent.

Click here to order CHASING THE VALLEY: SKYFIRE
by Skye Melki-Wegner

Sarah says: I'm such a huge fan of this series, I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of Skyfire.

This is the last book in the Chasing the Valley series and if it's anywhere near as enthralling as the first two books then I'm guaranteed to love it (and devour it in one sitting).

With it's magical blend of steampunk, adventure and fantasy, this series is bound to appeal to fans of Howl's Moving Castle and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

You can read my review of Chasing the Valley here.

by Christie Nieman

Sarah says: A hauntingly beautiful novel from an exciting Australian author, As Stars Fall is a story about, friendship and family and Bush stone-curlews. (Bush stone-curlews are a kind of bird, in case you were wondering.)

Full of dazzling imagery and the very lightest touch of magical realism, this gorgeous book explores the intricate and often unexpected ripple effects that can spring from love and loss.

A must read for fans of Fiona Wood and Melina Marchetta.

by Chris Weitz

Sarah says: Set in post apocalyptic New York, The Young World is an enthralling, fast paced, action packed adventure about a group of teenagers on a mission to save mankind.

Gang warfare, survival drama and plenty of teen angst combine to make a perfect storm in this debut novel from Chris Weitz, director of Twilight: New Moon and American Pie

Ideal for fans of The 100 and Monument 14.

IF I STAY
by Gayle Forman

Given the recent success of movie adaptations like The Spectacular Now, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Fault in Our Stars it seems like the world is going crazy for contemporary teen drama (heavy on the drama).

So if you're still crying over Augustus Waters and looking for something emotionally devastating to read - then look no further! If I Stay is the book for you.

Originally published in 2009, If I Stay, is definitely one of my favourite Young Adult novels. I was super excited when I heard that this lovely book was going to be adapted as a movie. And also a bit scared because my God! The emotions! This is not a movie I will be able to watch without crying a river.

In case I'm not making myself clear: If I Stay is a real tearjerker. Big Time. But one of the most fascinating things about this book is that many of it's most endearing characters are already dead from page one - meaning we only get to see them in flashbacks. As readers, we know from the start that these characters are goners. We know they're doomed. We should therefore know better than to get emotionally attached, right?

Wrong!

Gayle Forman has a way of making you fall in love with her characters - often against your will and better judgement. I'm afraid there's no avoiding the heartbreak, folks. If you decide to read this book (or see the movie) then you'd best accept the fact that it will absolutely destroy you. But it will be an emotionally cathartic and ultimately life affirming kind of destruction so ... yay! Feelings!

But do you want to know the best part about If I Stay? There's a sequel! Where She Went is every bit as beautiful as If I Stay and I'm hoping it will also be adapted into a movie because why not? Lets keep this emotional roller coaster going, I say!

If I Say is due for release in cinemas this August. Be sure to click the link below to watch the trailer below.

NEW ADULT
WARNING: New Adult fiction is targeted at post High School teens and early twenty-somethings. These books are about being young and reckless, falling in love for the first time and experimenting with the kinds of irresponsible behavior commonly associated with the crazy youth of today.

In other words, these books are bit naughty. If you are not old enough to vote, then you are too young and impressionable for this section. Read no further!
