WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS AT BOOKTOPIA!
It's at exactly this time of year that I get that Bing Crosby song stuck in my head: 'It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas'. I walk to and from work with it in my head, gliding past the shops with Christmas trees and tinsel. I look at the ground and pretend it isn't happening.

Booktopia is made for people like me. Online Christmas shopping is just too easy and of course, at Booktopia you will receive at least 20% off all newsletter items.

This newsletter has my top books for Zero to Fives for Christmas - you'll find something here for all the kids.

I have a special offer for you on Mem Fox's picture book Time for Bed. It's a small paperback edition for little hands at only $4.50.

The award-winning picture book team Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood have a beautiful new picture book called Clancy and Millie and the Very Fine House. To celebrate this release Booktopia has a giveaway on a special, limited edition print signed by Libby Gleeson.

I have recommended my favourite kids Christmas books as well, all of which will get the kids excited for the approach of Christmas Day.

I was a tad jealous when a friend recently told me that throughout her childhood both she and her sister would receive a 'Christmas book' every Christmas Eve. Just before bedtime they would collect their new book from under the tree and together as a family would read through the new as well as the old Christmas books that they had collected over the years. These are the things that memories are made of and how nostalgia has come to exist...

I'm sure you will find many great gift ideas in this newsletter and I hope it makes your Christmas shopping much easier. Perhaps then we can all sing along to Crosby with a little less angst?

Happy Christmas, happy holidays and happy reading,

Kate Mayes

CLANCY AND MILLIE AND THE VERY FINE HOUSE WITH FREE PRINT
Clancy and Millie and the Very Fine House is the new picture book from the award-winning picture book team, Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood.

Clancy has moved from a small cosy house in a small cosy street to a large and uninviting house in a large and uninviting street. His father loves the new space and his mother loves the new kitchen, but Clancy misses his old house terribly. As despair sets in Clancy hears the small voice of Millie, the little girl from next door. Together they build towers to the sky and trains the length of the garden. They build houses from boxes and so with the help of his new friend, Clancy discovers the home he thought he had lost forever.

This is a rich story about moving house, friendship and belonging. It will resonate with small children as they begin to experience change, friendship and finding their place in the world (even if that world is as small as their own home or preschool).

As a special offer to Booktopia customers, we have FIVE limited edition prints SIGNED by both Libby Gleeson to giveaway to customers who place an order with a total value over $50, including any book from this newsletter. Just send your order number to marketing@booktopia.com.au

THE ABC BOOK OF CHRISTMAS   SANTA'S AUSSIE HOLIDAY   THE FIRST CHRISTMAS
If you are after a Christmas
children's picture book that tells the story of the very first Christmas, then you can't go past The ABC Book of Christmas. It tells the story of the wise men travelling from afar, the angels appearing to the shepherds and of course the baby Christ child lying in a manager. It is an old story and it is known well, but the illustrations  in this particular retelling offer a refreshing and tender insight into a very human but heavenly story.

Illustrations by Stephen Michael King, Gaye Chapman, Anna Walker, Wayne Harris and others.

TIME FOR BED
TIME FOR BED is a perennial favourite written by best-selling children's author Mem Fox.

It is a rhyming text and has the feel of an old, well-loved nursery rhyme or lullaby:

"It's time for bed, little mouse, little mouse,
Darkness is falling all over the house.
It's time for bed, little goose, little goose,
The stars are out and on the loose..."

The illustrations are gentle and have a soft, warm and very inviting pallet. This particular edition is a small paperback, perfect for little hands to hold as the story is read.

As an exclusive offer to Booktopia's customers you will receive 44% off this classic children's picture book.

HUSH, HUSH!
Hush, Hush! by Margaret Wild is the endearing sequel to the best-selling picture book Kiss, Kiss! which has featured on Playschool many times over.

In Hush, Hush! all the baby animals across the Savannah are being hushed to sleep by their mummies and daddies. Except for Baby Hippo! He wriggles and squirms and stands on his head. He does anything to avoid going to sleep! That is until he takes a wander through the animal kingdom and discovers all the other baby animals are being hushed to sleep.

The text is simple, rhythmic and repetitive. It is perfect for reading aloud and is sure to become a bedtime favourite. You might even find it helps in hushing your own baby animal to sleep...

SNOW WHITE
The classic story of Snow White is retold in this book by Jane Ray through six stunningly crafted, 3-D peep through scenes. The book is framed as if being performed on a stage: the illustrations offer a romantic and dramatic interpretation of Grimms' original story and the reader becomes the audience. I don't particularly like to reinforce gender stereotypes, but it's hard to see how the drama, romance and beauty of this luxurious book won't capture the imagination of girls aged 4+.

DUCK IN THE TRUCK BOOK AND CD   FREDDY THE FROG BATH BOOK   WADDLE
This is the tale of a duck in a truck that was stuck in some yucky brown muck.

Duck is a wonderful character who gets his truck stuck! To get the truck unstuck Duck must enlist the help of his friends; like a sheep in a jeep and a goat in a boat.
This is a fun, rollicking tale full of humour and a rather unexpected ending. The audio component of this book will allow kids to listen and read along to this rhythmical yarn.

An excellent book for Christmas and the perfect stocking stuffer for kids! This is a novelty book that the whole family will enjoy. Each page contains a moving image; the 'technology' of this book harks back to the days when the first flicker films were made. The book is called Waddle because the penguin really does waddle across the page! This book will be a sure winner.

The first male I gave this book to had to cut it open to 'see how it worked'.  Hmmm. Gender distinctions?

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CHILDREN'S BOOKS

1001 CHILDREN'S BOOKS YOU MUST READ BEFORE YOU GROW UP is the most excellent guide book for anyone who loves children's books and any parent or adult who needs a hand knowing what books to buy for kids. While it's a great book of recommendations for kids' reading, you may find yourself flipping through the pages with a certain sense of nostalgia over the books you are bound to recognise from your own childhood. Considering we were all children once and that children's books so often offer a richness that adult's books don't, I'd count this as a must-have for every bookshelf. It will make you wish you were under your old childhood doona with a hot chocolate and a story book like The Little Engine That Could or...

THIS IS AUSTRALIA (WELL IT WAS 39 YEARS AGO - A RETROSPECTIVE)

Originally published in 1970 This is Australia is a very retro look at Australia. The book walks you through each of the capital cities looking at the icons that have come to represent Australia, both natural and constructed. It's fun to see what Australia looked like 'all those years ago' and how Australia was 'seen'. Many things have changed since this book was first published but it's a charming retrospective and kids will be fascinated pouring over the detailed illustrations and facts about Australia.
