| KAREN'S PICK: P.C. AND KRISTIN CAST |
 |
The House of Night Series by P.C. and Kristin Cast
Amongst the wave of vampire and other paranormal series that are hitting our shores at the moment, this one stands out. This mother-daughter writing team have found a captivating combination between a world elaborately imagined and characters delicately drawn. The House of Night is a Vampyre High School, set in a world where vampyres live in (almost) harmony with humans and all the other varieties of undead creatures. Using matriarchy as the premise of their new world order, the Casts are able to refresh many of the more stale clichés that stifle other fantasy stories. Their story contains just the right balance of human depth, comedy, melodrama and many a steamy blood (or other) lust scene in between. The protagonist and narrator, Zoey Redbird, beautifully illustrates a teen's thoughts and confusions as she stumbles through love triangles, social circles, new schools and, of the course, the battle between good and evil. The action moves quickly, written so that plot action simultaneously introduces details and new characters, leaving little time to get bored. If there were any disappointment, it would be that, at times, some scenarios can seem rather contrived (for instance an all-female group showering scene in the fifth and most recent book is rather hard to believe as a spontaneous event). These moments do not detract from the enjoyment however, rather they usually add to to it (after all - who doesn't enjoy a good all-female group showering scene?).
P.C. Cast is an award-winning fantasy and paranormal romance author. She lives and teaches in Oklahoma. When her agent asked her to create a series about "vampyre" finishing school, she immediately imagined a high school setting, with a strong focus on human physiology. Her daughter, Kristin Cast, has won awards for poetry and journalism. She also lives in Oklahoma, where she attends Northeastern State University as a communications major.

Marked: House of Night Book 1 (available now, new edition with cover featured available in May 2009).
When sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird gets Marked as a fledgling vampire she must join the House of Night school where she will train to become an adult vampyre. That is, if she makes it through the Change. But Zoey is no ordinary fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the Goddess Nyx and discovers her amazing new power to conjure the elements: earth, air, fire, water and spirit...
Betrayed House of Night Book 2 (available now, new edition with cover featured available in May 2009).
It seems that (un)life is going pretty well for Zoey Redbird. She's settled in at the House of Night finishing school and is coming to terms with the vast powers the vampyre goddess, Nyx, has given her. She even has a boyfriend... or two. Then the unthinkable happens. Human teenagers are being killed, and all the evidence points to the vampyres at Zoey's school. While danger stalks the humans from Zoey's past life, she begins to realise that the very powers that made her so unique might also threaten those she loves...
Chosen House of Night Book 3 (available now, new edition with cover featured available in May 2009).
IN STOCK
Zoey's best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead - in the bad zombie kind-of-way, not in the good vampyre kind-of-way. She's struggling to retain her humanity and Zoey doesn't have a clue how to help. But she does know that anything they discover must be kept secret. Trust has become a rare commodity at the House of Night, where the line between friend and enemy is becoming dangerously blurred.
Untamed House of Night Book 4 (available now, new edition with cover featured available in June 2009).
In one week Zoey Redbird has gone from having three boyfriends to having none, and from having a close group of friends who trusted and supported her, to being an outcast. Speaking of friends, the only two Zoey has left are undead and unmarked. And Neferet has declared war on humans, which Zoey knows in her heart is wrong. But will anyone listen to her?
Hunted House of Night Book 5 (pre order now, new edition with cover featured available in July 2009).
Zoey Redbird has her friends back, which is great. But a dark angel has taken over the House of Night, supported by High Priestess Neferet, which is not so great. This leaves Zoey hiding out with a chance to make-up with her ex, Eric. Yet thoughts of the archer that died, semi-permanently, in her arms keep distracting her. Then he turns up as Neferet's newest minion. Zoey needs a plan to put things right, soon, if she's to keep both head and heart intact.

The Sookie Stackhouse Boxed Set
Charlaine Harris
Of all the books in this newsletter, this series had me laughing the loudest. Sookie is a charming character to follow, full of foibles and witticisms about the constant vampire strife she finds herself in. She also has the handy knack of reading minds, especially useful when meeting the range of weird and wonderful creatures that seem to waltz through her life. Sookie's life as a waitress in small-town Louisiana coexists with vampires, since the invention of synthetic blood in Japan, and one in particular whom Sookie finds hard to resist. Sookie's naughty thoughts, interspersed with musings on her predicaments, make this a hilarious little rollercoaster of a series.

Cassandra Clare
About four years ago, I started to read some of Clare’s unpublished work on the internet, and fell in love with her wit, humour and imagination. Two years later she wrote her first novel, City of Bones, and I was head over heels again. Her trilogy, follows Clary Fray, a fifteen-year-old New Yorker whose mother disappears, leaving behind a trail of clues about a life of which Clary never knew. Her mother, Jocelyn, was a Shadowhunter, a warrior who fights demons and other Downworlders. Jocelyn fled her world, Alicante, to raise Clary as a human, away from the endless danger of her previous life. Clary must team up with her best friend, Simon, and the Shadowhunters Jace, Alec and Isabelle to find her mother and save Alicante from impending doom.
Although it sounds like just another fantasy series, Mortal Instruments is so much more. It has a fascinating plot and its characters ring absolutely true. The mix of gritty New York and the fantastical Alicante will entice even the most obstinate fantasy-aphobe.
Stephenie Meyer claims that "The Mortal Instruments series is a story world I want to live in".
Clare is now writing a prequel series, Infernal Devices, which promises to be just as inviting. To read more about it, click here.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen
Grahame-Smith has coined his version of the Austen classic an 'expanded edition'. Whilst maintaining most of the original text, he has inserted the story Austen seemed to leave out, obviously that featuring the scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. Whilst Mrs Bennett prattles on about her desire to see her daughters married, Grahame-Smith's Mr Bennett is preoccupied with getting his daughters trained in 'the deadly arts'. In this version it is Lizzie Bennett's 'killer instinct' that sets her apart from other young women, and Mr Darcy's skill at beheading unmentionables that heradles his arrival to Netherfield. A buffy-esque romp through the English countryside, this comedy of manners will suit anyone with a good sense of the ridiculous and a willingness appreciate that true classics don't lose their integrity when rebirthed for the younger generation. The book is accompanied throughout by illustrations of the blood-bursting madness and there is already a cult following on Twitter and Facebook, as well as movie rights featuring Natalie Portman as the now-more-than-feisty Elizabeth.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Millennium Trilogy #1
This, the first book in the Millennium Trilogy, was awarded Crime Thriller of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards on the 10th April 2009.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens this trilogy, forty years ago, when Harriet Vanger disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by her powerful family. Harriet’s uncle, Henrik, is convinced that she was murdered by someone in her own deeply disfunctional family. His search to discover the truth is a violent and bloody thriller, a sinister family saga, a mystery of massive financial fraud and a haunting love story. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a complex and unique contribution to crime fiction.
Stieg Larsson was the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Expo and a leading expert on anti-democratic, right-wing extremist organisations. He died in 2004, soon after delivering all three manuscripts of the Millennium Trilogy to his publisher.

Girl Who Played With Fire: Millennium Trilogy #2
In this volume two Millennium journalists are murdered just as they are about to reveal secrets of the sex trade. Lisbeth Salander prints have become dangerous in the case, not to mention her history of unpredictable and vengeful behaviour. She has also disappeared, but Mikael Blomkvist, editor-in-chief of Millennium, does not believe the police. Blomkvist uses all the resources at his disposal to prove Salander's innocence, also uncovering a shady past, spent in criminally corrupt institutions, attempting to act more as avenging angel than helpless victim. This intriguing second installment is also already a bestseller worldwide.

Meanwhile the chief of security deliberately feeds her a daily poison, forcing her to remain within his grasp and recieve the antidote. As Yelena tries to plan her escape, her choices become less clear.

| SHERRILYN KENYON |

PATRICIA BRIGGS |
 |
I'm not afraid to say it: Sherrilyn Kenyon is THE romance writer of the moment. Her Dream Hunter and Dark Hunter series create a fantasy world centuries before the birth of Christ where humans and gods coalesce. Kenyon has stated there is no necessity to read the series in complete order, though some may prefer it. All the books up until Acheron comprise the first part of this series and Kenyon imagines that there will be four parts in total.
Acheron: Book 22 (in reading order)
Acheron is legend personified. He was the first Dark-Hunter ever appointed, and the youngest to die. He wrote the Dark-Hunter Creed and Code, fought the Daimons alone for thousands of years and is more phantom than real. He is eccentric and idiosyncratic, interacting with other Dark-Hunters only on whims, to offer his highly sought after advice. The Dark-Hunters are very wary of Acheron's moods, since they run the full spectrum from friendly to downright scary. He is physically perfect and possesses a raw, rare kind of charisma. No one knows that much about him and he likes it that way. Trying to get any personal information out if him is impossible task, no one even knows what his real hair colour is.

Dream Warrior: Dream Hunter Book 2 (Dark Hunter Book 25 in reading order)
The son of Warcraft and Hate, Cratus is death. Now that an ancient enemy has been unleashed, Cratus's task is to destroy it. Delphine Toussaint is a philanthropist whose passion is for world peace. When a chance meeting brings her together with Cratus, the two develop a striking bond. Delphine is troubled by nightmares that are slowly becoming reality. She finds comfort in Cratus but refuses to give in to war, whereas he refuses to lay down his arms. Yet one of them must give in, or humanity will pay the price...

Lois H. Gresh
IN STOCK
It's obvious Lois H. Gresh had a lot of fun writing this book. As Gresh investigates the Meyer series, she picks apart the practicalities of loving a vampire. For instance, just how would one maintain one's good looks next to your immortal darling? And if a virile young vampire needs say, 3,200 calories per day, just how many humans (or other food sources) does he need to find? Gresh compares Meyer's vampires to a host of other literary, cinematic and TV vamps as she muses. Gresh also goes into the history of werewolves and their rivalry with vampires, and devotes two chapters to the ins and outs necessary for protecting your vampire. She also includes a couple of quizzes, such as 'Could Edward be the Man for Me?' Anyone who can't get enough of vamps at the moment will love this book, and it would make a terrific gift choice.
