 | THE LATEST IN ARTS AND CRAFT
|
 | Welcome all those of the creative bent!
I know it seems to have been a long time coming, but we are finally ready to bring you the second in our crafting series! I am delighted to have such a fantasmagorical collection to present to you - I only hope I can impart in full, just how drool-inspiring the gorgeous, glossy pages you are about to gain preview to, really are.
Choosing favourites feels rather like picking the brightest star in the sky - ah - but someone has to do it! The Victoria and Albert Museum's editions of The Fifties and Digital Pioneers are way up there on the list, as are works/books by contemporary artists such as Hot Type by Brett McFadden and Scott Thorpe, and Kindling by James Jean. If you are looking for textile projects, start with Sew It Up, and if you have kids (or are a big kid) go straight to Pixarpedia and The Lego Book, two spectacular chronologies of character-filled empires.
Of course, the main purpose of any retailer at this time of year, is to get you in the holiday mood, so I have also provided the 'best of the best' in books for keeping the kids occupied over the summer holidays and making gifts, as well as some books that would make beautiful presents.
And now, I think I'll leave it to the books to speak for themselves!
Until next time,
Karen Coleman Managing Editor Booktopia

 | 50 CHRISTMAS THINGS TO MAKE AND DO
Fiona Watt
If you have a craftily inclined little one to spend the summer holidays with, this collection of nifty creations will not only help while away the hours, it will help fill the house with cute kiddy christmas decorative cheer! As a sprial-bound hardcover, it is easy to flip through and choose your next favourite project: try the dangly reindeer, tissue paper giftwrap, advent castle, foil decorations, paper garland...

CHRISTMAS ART IDEAS
Expanding upon some of the more complicated projects in 50 Christmas Things to Make and Do and using the same techniques to invent new ones, Christmas Art Ideas is the book for older crafters of the household. Suitable for 8 to 80 year olds (and I know one 80 year-old who would get a real kick out of doing this with his 8 year-old grandkids). *Be warned: if you buy both 50 Christmas Things to Make and Do and Christmas Art Ideas expect some cross-over in the projects.*

GREETING CARDS FOR THE FIRST TIME
Vanessa-Ann
Now that we have reached the digital age, what could be more personal, more intimiate, more loving, than a handmade christmas card? Vanessa-Ann takes you through every stage of the process, from selecting papers, through different types of folds and embellishments, and onto adding multi-dimensions. One of my favourites is the accordion card, complete with many hands which clap in applause of the recipent's job well done. Vanessa-Ann also shows you how to incorporate pockets, pressed flowers and photographs into your card designs. As the book continues, so does the the skill and difficulty level of the designs, so your cards will get better with each try!

 | | MAKING GIFTS
|
 | ONE HOUR CRAFT
| | HOMEMADE GIFTS |
 | Maria Binns
Binns' is like a Jamie Durie of domestic creativity, only inside her tool box you will find a pair of pliers and a hot glue gun. Her projects are perfect for anyone who has a cupboard full of lovely but unfinished endeavours - this is a collection of beautifully achievable things. Grasp that one hour of unplanned time to make a tote bag, decoupage wall art piece, crystal earrings, avocado mask or - my favourite - a clock out of a CD and spoons. Each page is clearly laid out with numbered photographs to match each instruction.

Nicki Trench
The best thing about this divine collection of gift ideas is that it draws on the whole spectrum of your skills-base (or rather, just requires you to have a few skills and can help teach you some others) to create personalised, unique presents for your loved ones. There is something for everyone in here: a Strawberry Tea Cosy for Nan, Baby Boy's Tank Top, Miss Bunny Rabbit, Man's Crochet Beanie and Love heart cookies. The last two double pages are devoted to instructional diagrams and explanations (*sigh of relief*) on knitting, embroidery and crochet. My only advise is: leave yourself plenty of time to prepare before the present is needed!

|
 | 52 Brilliant Ideas for Awakening the Artistic Genius Within
Colin Salter
If you are already a regular crafter/artist/creator and have the occasional drought of imaginative juices - this is the book you have been looking for. The 52 ideas here are not didactic, they are rather exercises in provoking your mind, unblocking any dams that may have built up in the nerve endings of your brain, and (to continue the water metaphor) allowing the flow to burst forth in as many directions as possible. The projects are as diverse as creating an inspirational feature wall in your own home, to designing a 'figureless' self-portrait (ie one containing objects and symbols that represent your character rather than your appearance). Each project inspires a range of alternatives, each with the motivational and emotional impact of the original. Highly recommended for anyone who has recently found themselves in a creative rut.

| | Kelly Doust
I am not going to even try and disguise it in any way: I am completely in love with Doust's approach to crafting. Using entirely recycled materials from around the house, she creates useful new things like tea cosies, baby bibs, aprons, lampshades, shopping bags, and children's toys from old woollens. Iron on appliqués are just about the only new things you might need to buy and these will be worth the personalised touch they add to your new creations (such as a baby's initials on a bib or your own tea towels). The projects are sorted by season according to what you will be wanting (ie a beach bag in summer and leg warmers in winter). Patterns and dimensions are included, such as the feeding pillow, day-nap eye patch and a variety of templates for creatures to adorn your projects.

NB: This title is not due for release from the publishers until November 2009. Booktopia will make every effort to deliver it as promptly as possible after this time.

 | | | BIG BOOKS OF SOCKS |
 | Kathleen Taylor
'I doubt there's a single sock knitter out there who hasn't heard, "You know you can buy those for two dollars a pair".' You can almost hear Taylor's shake of the head as she commiserates over the uninitiated masses. "I knit socks because knitting socks makes me happy', she explains, 'that's the only reason I need, but of course, there are many more'. Taylor is a self-confessed sock fanatic. In these pages you find every shape, design, make and feel of sock you could have ever imagined: each pattern starting with its difficulty level, and including yarn weight and sizes before actually telling you how to make the sock. Most of the patterns are for beginners, and some come in baby bootie sizes! The entire book is pretty sumptuous in its colour photos displaying the entire array of warm knitted fabrics.

| | METRIC PATTERN CUTTING FOR CHILDREN'S WEAR & BABYWEAR |
 | Brett McFadden, Scott Thorpe
Here it is: easy, breezy, DIY clothing design. Using these 30 typographical colour iron-on transfers you can customise your own t-shirts, hats, bags, jeans... (etc, etc) i n just two steps. Full instructions and application tips are included.
San Francisco-based partners MacFadden and Thorpe graduated from design school joking that their classmates were 'a bunch of bobble-head fashion-victims', 'full of tire-kickers and dilettantes'. MacFadden claims his own dress sense is 'experimental and loosey-goosey', contrasting Thorpe who 'can make anything look refined in an half-hour, and his rags are outstanding'. MacFadden's drawings have been shown around the world, recently in the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art. He remembers that he 'started doing them just because... they had no requirement to be good, or refined, or smart, or relevant. They just were.'

Now in its fourth edition this book remains the essential reference guide on the topic of children's clothes, though it now has major improvements. Today's popularity of easy-fitting styles and knitted fabrics means that basic 'flat' pattern cutting is often used and therefore emphasised in this new edition. Shaped blocks, such as school uniforms, are still included or more expensive fashion or formal clothes. The book now clearly separates the sections useful to beginners, and those for the more advanced and even some tips for designers working in industry. Colour coding has been introduced to the sections, making it easier to identify specific processes in the book and enhancing the illustrations. The size charts have also been revised, clearly dividing the boys' and girls' measurements in co-ordination with European size charts. 'Plus' charts for heavier children have also been added. | | PAPER ASTRONAUTS | | ETCETERA
|
 | By Juliette Cezzar, introduction by Buzz Aldrin
You might have seen there was rather a lot of gaff to do with the 40th anniversary of the moon landing... but this is hands down my favourite. Why? Because alongside the stunning archival photographs and colourful technical drawings of this deep space voyage - this book features expertly designed spacecraft models that readers can actually cut out and assemble. Every little (and big) boy's dream: each rocket is accompanied by amazing stories, fascinating facts and statistics about the universe, presented with clear assembly instructions and helpful advice for deploying a galactic fleet from your bedroom.

| | Creating Beautiful Interiors with the Things You Love
Sibella Court
Court has not written a book, she has designed a book. This stunning reproduction of the most professional scrapbook you have ever seen creates the feel and intimacy of a home in hundreds of matt images. From the delicacy of a bottled ship's interior to the personality of a home library, Court meditates on what decorating a home means and how one's thought process might occur through it. She gives many snippets of advice throughout, though it should be warned that this will be completely useless to anyone looking for the DIY 'how to' guide from scratch. This book is better described as inspiring - useful to the competent, capable, inventive and to those willing to think outside the box of their house. To everyone else, it would make a very beautiful coffee table book.

| | LEGO celebrated it's 50th anniversary in 2008, and in that time the company has managed to produce 62 lego bricks for every person in the world (only 1% of the plastic waste from which went unrecycled in their factories). This book celebrates the system that has kept generations enthralled by showing you how the bricks are made, introducing you to various characters (meet Indiana Jones, Batman, Harry Potter and Luke Skywalker) and new digital designs, LEGO art and fan creations. The images of these mite-y men are interspersed with trivia of every particularity, for instance the 'female sailor marked the first time a minifigure wore lipstick' and the 'minifigure's body is made up of only eight parts: two arms, two hands, two legs, a torso and a head, which are held together by a special "snap system".'

Remember Maxwell Smart and 99? More particularly, remember 99's synthetic fluoro numbers and the constant battle against Siegfried, the mastermind of Chaos. This book is the real life history that inspired both Barbara Feldon's outfits and tongue-in-cheek fear of all things too left. Inspired by the space age, the designers in this book wrap their models in 'boots and capes resembling cosmonauts', eagerly preparing clothes for 'a life that doesn’t exist yet – the world of tomorrow' - Pierre Cardin. This was the age when ready-mades came into fashion, and clothes came to be seen as an alternate form of architecture or sculpture. Click here to see inside this book.

This book is about the ways in which graphics inspired fear and loyalty in the Cold War generations. To Crowley's credit, he takes a largely global survey, encompassing not only Western and Soviet nations, but Eastern and more minor European states (though Australia, Africa and South-East Asia are rather scarce). Crowley discusses the meaning and impact of the images, such as 'The Black Market Destroys Peace' - featuring a white dove plummeting to the ground as it is injected with illegally procured medicine - the Netherlands' Government's attempt to control black markets. The book features over 70 designs including artists such as Pablo Picasso and Peter Kennard. Crowley teaches history at the Royal College of Art, London and was the consultant curator of the V&A's exhibition, Cold War Modern.

SPOTLESS 2 : More Stains and Solutions to Domestic Disasters
Lush and Fleming's first book of 2005 was an instant bestseller and this follow up edition promises no less. They start with a list of ingredients and where to buy them, before launching into a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the house and how to tackle any problems that may arise in each room of it. This edition now has an all new chapter: Clothing and Shoes, tackling yoghurt on cotton, toothpaste on wool, preventing piling and cleaning suede. Lush and Fleming, who conduct weekly appearances on national talk-back radio, have taken the approach in this edition to answer as many of their listeners' questions as they can, using as practical methods as they can think of. Sometimes their approaches are very innovative, making use of tea bags, banana peels and dental floss in ways you would have never imagined, but the results are undeniable.
