 | | BUZZ IN BRIEF |
 | Hello and welcome to November!
First up, an apology. This is a very long newsletter so if you have trouble viewing it all, click here to read it on our site. There is a reason for its length however. As far as breadth, range and quality, this is the best Christmas season I have seen in many years. There are simply too many really good books to choose from. As a consequence, I have tried to keep the reviews tight, but do click through to the books on our site - we have added as many internal images, chapter samplers and other goodies as possible. As for stock levels, just about everything is in stock (or coming in on release date) but of course, at this time of year, things are coming and going really quickly.
As for the many books that almost made Booktopia Buzz, they are all together here at Booktopia's November Favourites. And if you twisted my arm for my personal top three, I'd have to say Alex Miller's Lovesong, A Life on Pittwater and David Small's Stitches: A Memoir, although that is a pretty idiosyncratic list.
For those of you wanting the best picks for kids, you can go directly there from here. For everything else, continue down or use the navigation on the right.
Enough from me - enjoy the selection.

 | A LIFE ON PITTWATER by Susan Duncan and Anthony Ong
I must admit I approached my interview with Susan Duncan with trepidation as her much loved and much praised memoirs, Salvation Creek and The House at Salvation Creek, had passed me by when they were originally released. While I had subsequently read them in preparation, I was unsure how she would be able to capture the spirit and essence of this very special place, nor how relevant she could make it to people living away from this blessed, watery northern corner of Sydney.
Let me tell you that from the moment I opened this glorious book, I was smiling. It is impossible not to feel happy exploring this book. And what Duncan successfully captures in words, her across the water neighbour Ong, translates into the most marvellous, light filled images.
A Life on Pittwater takes the reader to this most beguiling of places, where tinnies take the place of cars and the social life revolves around both your neighbours, and their dogs. But it would be a mistake to think that this book is simply about Pittwater. There is something wonderfully universal about the spirit in which it has been put together, and for that reason, I am very excited to make it my book of the month. I for one will have no hesitation giving this book to anyone who wants to know what Australia can be at its finest.
We have signed editions in stock today. Meanwhile, click here to see internal images of the book and to watch my interview with Susan Duncan.
A Life on Pittwater RRP $59.95, Booktopia price $47.95

 | | | AUSTRALIAN FICTION - THE BIG NAMES |
 | | LOVESONG | | PARROT AND OLIVIER IN AMERICA |
 | Alex Miller
As you can imagine, I am lucky enough to get a lot of uncorrected proof copies to read and I do endeavour to read them in order of their impending publication. Not so with Lovesong. Everything else was put aside and the weekend happily disappeared a couple of months ago as Miller led me from a small Tunisian cafe in Paris run by the widow Houria and her young niece Sabiha back to Melbourne with the melancholic baker, John Patterner. The writer of The Ancestor Game, Journey to the Stone Country and Landscape of Farewell has given us, yet again, a pitch-perfect novel of exile, connection and the tragic beauty of love. Alex Miller has won many prizes, including of course the coveted Miles Franklin Award. Lovesong, presented as a lovely hardback, is up there with his best.
Lovesong RRP $39.99, Booktopia price $31.99 | | Peter Carey
Another hardback from another giant of the Australian - and international - literary scene. Twice Man Booker winner, Peter Carey brings us the story of an unlikely friendship between a second rate French aristocrat and his English servant in the turmoil that was the infancy of America. The old world meets the new in this funny and imaginative tour de force, that is classic Carey.
An extract of Parrot and Olivier in America is below on the book description on site, click here to read it. Click here to watch Peter Carey discuss his latest novel with Granta magazine.
Parrot and Olivier in America RRP $49.99, Booktopia price $39.99

 | | BROTHERS AND SISTERS | | SONS OF THE RUMOUR |
 | Charlotte Wood (ed)
Another book I can't leave alone! From the first glimpse of the cover (what an evocative image!) I was just dying to read the individual takes on the sibling relationship from the likes of Christos Tsiolkas, Nam Le, Robert Drewe and Roger McDonald. Through both the imagination of storytelling and the lens of personal experience, this is the brother and sister relationship laid bare. You know who to give this one to this Christmas.
Brothers and Sisters RRP $32.99, Booktopia price $26.39
| | David Foster
There is a kind of reverence that is reserved for David Foster, who is returning to print with a novel that has been ten years in the writing. Described variously as wildly ambitious, hugely idiosyncratic, devilishly complex, unapologetically ribald and devastatingly wise, Sons of the Rumour is at its most basic level a psychedelic retelling of the 1001 Nights: a bawdy historical romp coloured with Foster's trademark Aussie vernacular. On a deeper level, it is an examination of the rift between Islam and the West (particularly fundamentalist Islamic man and secular Western woman), but its core is the story of Shahrazade and the Shah. It also has a 19 line long sentence describing the said Shahrazad's breasts, which is not the sort of thing one reads everyday! We have placed one of her tales, The Fire Lamb, on the site for you to get a feel for.
Sons of the Rumour RRP $39.99, Booktopia price $31.99

| | | FROM ACROSS THE SEAS - MORE BIG NAMES IN FICTION |
 | | THE LACUNA | | INVISIBLE/LAST NIGHT IN THE TWISTED RIVER |
 | Barbara Kingsolver
What really went on in the household of Frida Kahlo and her painter husband, Diego Rivera? Their stormy relationship, full of extra-marital flings and break-ups, is probably as famous as their art, and the curiosity factor grew when they sheltered Leon Trotsky during the 1930s. Grounded in history, Barbara Kingsolver’s new novel imagines what happened behind closed doors, through the eyes of their housekeeper, Harrison Shepherd. Kingsolver’s epic story – spanning four decades of political upheavals in America and Mexico – is a vivid, colour-soaked depiction of those times. Kingsolver seems pulled between following her characters, and the historical events. It’s a dense, often too wide-stretching plot, (and it certainly does take a while to get going) but the characters – social climbers, lefties, do-gooders and crooks – make her rich, poetic writing come alive. Lacuna is a welcome return to print for Kingsolver and will delight fans of her classics such as The Prodigal Summer, and The Poisonwood Bible as well as taking her to a new, wider audience.
Lacuna RRP $35.00, Booktopia price $28.00
| | Paul Auster
A very welcome return to fine form from Paul Auster. This is a story that spans the forty years from 1967 and involves a young Columbia University student, an enigmatic French man, his seductive girlfriend and a shocking act of violence that changes all of their lives. Auster tells the story through three interwoven voices. I haven't finished reading it yet, but I note the exceptional reviews that it has been garnering, near and far. The Kirkus review is definitely worth reading, and do look on our site to see the Granta interview with the man himself.
Invisible RRP $32.99, Booktopia price $26.39
John Irving is also back in form with Last Night in Twisted River which has had universal praise. It’s not difficult to make the case that John Irving is the greatest American novelist of his generation...Of all the great American novelists of his generation, he has been the timeless one who has unerringly delivered; in any decade a John Irving book is a genuine event. (The Financial Times - click here for the full review).

 | | A SONG IN THE DAYLIGHT | | UNDER THE DOME |
 | Paullina Simons
This newsletter wouldn't be complete without mentioning Paullina Simons who will be touring across the country this month. She has an immensely loyal fan base, drawn to her powerful writing which combines humour, heartache and suspense with all-too-human characters. Larissa Stark is a beautiful woman who plays many roles in her life: wife, mother, devoted friend, until a chance encounter with a stranger leaves her contemplating the unthinkable - how does one woman follow a divided heart? Spanning the upscale suburbs of New Jersey, the slums of Manila and the desolate beauty of the Australian outback, A Song in the Daylight is vintage Simons. A Song in the Daylight RRP $32.99, Booktopia price $26.39
| | Stephen King
November 10 is the worldwide release date of what promises to be another block buster from Stephen King. A Maine town and its inhabitants are isolated from the world by an invisible, impenetrable dome. This book will thrill every reader who has ever loved a King book, as well as garner him more devoted fans.
Under the Dome RRP $34.99, Booktopia price $27.99

 | | STARDUST | | NINE DRAGONS |
 | Joseph Kanon
In Stardust Kanon deftly mixes a haunting personal story, political intrigue, and 1945 period detail to stunning effect. As the story opens, Army translator and film maker Ben Collier has returned from war-torn Europe and is on a Hollywood-bound train surrounded by industry players. He's on his way to the hospital where his only sibling, his brother Daniel, is in a coma and not expected to live, after an attempt on his own life given the spin by his studio's publicity department. Why would a man with the world by the tail—a beautiful wife, a successful producing career, and a heroic past—try to kill himself? I really enjoyed Stardust - the perfect blend of glamour, mystery and intrigue with a complexity and relevance in the vein of Le Carre or Greene.
There is an excerpt and a piece to camera by Kanon here.
Stardust RRP $32.99, Booktopia price $26.39

 | | | SOMETHING DIFFERENT |
 | STITCHES: A MEMOIR
| | LIQUOR AND THE NICK
|
 | David Small
I was completely unprepared for the emotional pull of David Small's graphic memoir, Stitches. David Small started his illustration career on The New Yorker, Esquire and Playboy. He is best known as a children's book author and illustrator and has won the Caldecott Medal more than once. Small started drawing when he was two years old, and spent much of his childhood, which was plagued by illness, disappearing into his own world of illustration and imagination. Stitches starts in Detroit in the early 50s with Small, the passive observer of an increasingly dysfunctional family. What follows is a descent into illness and a kind of madness, as his trust in all who should have protected him is increasingly betrayed. This is definitely Augusten Burroughs Running with Scissors territory. Yes, it is a shocking story of parental abuse, and yes, there is redemption at the end. But I was absolutely drawn in from the very first page of this stunning memoir, and I can't imagine how a book that purely relied on words could do it justice. From the scarlet imprint of lipstick on Mrs Dillon's filter-tipped cigarettes to the vulnerability of David upside down on the monkey bars wearing his favourite Alice in Wonderland head scarf, this is a haunting, visual memoir whose visceral impact goes much further than words. I can't recommend this highly enough. Click here for images.
Stitches RRP $37.95, Booktopia price $30.35

HOTEL KEROBOKAN
Kathryn Bonella
Marching Powder meets Schapelle Corby's My Story in Kathryn Bonella's Hotel Kerobokan, the inside story of Bali's most notorious jail. With unprecedented access over a long period of time, Bonella chronicles the full horror - from terrible, public sexual abuses, to bribery, prostitution, deadly isolation cells - not to mention suicide attempts - a drug trade running rife, a reign of terror by gang warlords, daily violence, non-existent hygiene and mass break outs. Bonella presents us with a cavalcade of the notorious - Schapelle Corby, The Bali Nine, the Bali bombers - in a book that unfortunately has enormous interest.

Gary Dexter
Mark Twain on Jane Austen: Every time I read Pride and Prejudice I want to dig her up and hit her over the skull with her own shinbone. Norman Mailer on Tom Wolfe's novel A Man in Full: It is a 742-page work that reads as if it is 1500-pages long... At certain points, reading the work can even be said to resemble the act of making love to a 300lb woman. Once she gets on top, it's all over. Fall in love, or be asphyxiated. Very un-PC I know, but you get the drift. There is plenty of interest, sparring and gleeful nastiness in this book of literary criticism.

| | Edward Hollis
Here are thirteen tales of buildings, from the Wailing Wall to the palaces of Los Vegas from which we come away with the idea that, however solid they might appear, such monuments and structures are almost febrile things. The more we try to pin them down, and conserve them, at any one single point in their aesthetic history, the more we imperil of our collective imagination. Here are wondrous stories writ in stone, and Edward Hollis has written about them very well indeed.
