WELCOME TO THE BOOKTOPIA'S NEW CRIME AND MYSTERY BUZZ!

Dear Crime Reader,

You are in for a treat! This is Booktopia's very first crime and mystery newsletter. We have so many lovers of this genre that we absolutely had to put together a monthly missive with nothing but murder, mayhem and mystery.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you our new Crime Buzz editor, Chris Bilkey. A bookseller for years, Chris is an avowed lover of all things noir  - in fact, his knowledge of the genre is encyclopaedic, and his enthusiasm, boundless. He is in essence, the perfect person to wax lyrical on this topic.

We are sending this newsletter to you because you have bought crime books from us in the past. If you prefer not to receive it in the future, simply unsubscribe. If on the other hand you absolutely love it, share the joy by passing it on to a friend.

Enough from me. Enjoy Booktopia's Crime Buzz!

Booktopia Buzz

As crime and mystery fans know, the genre is a broad one, ranging from the classic mysteries of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, through crime noir and police procedurals to psychological thrillers, quirky crime and much more.

We will be trying to do justice to the breadth of the genre, and the books featured in the first Crime Buzz are good examples.

The Book of the Month is The Man From Beijing by renowned author Henning Mankell, and a good example of literate European crime.

The grandfather of Australian crime writing, Peter Corris, has a new Cliff Hardy novel - Torn Apart. It stands up very well alongside others in his much loved series.

Alexander McCall Smith's new Mma Ramotswe story, The Double Comfort Safari Club, is another delightful addition to the series and to the quirky crime offerings. Don't miss it!

And speaking of Quirky Crime, Thereby Hangs a Tail, the sequel to last year's surprise canine-crime bestseller Dog On It, has just hit the shelves and is one of my favourites for the month.

Also featured this February, Michael Dobbs' intelligent new mystery, another blood-chilling offering from New Zealand's king of psychological thrillers, Paul Cleave, and an-edge-of-your-seat page turner from Robert Crais.

You'll also find a round-up of the best in Australian, British and American crime for the month and a sneak peak at the most exciting titles set for release in March.

The quality of crime writing has never been higher, and the offerings are plentiful.

We will be trying to pick the best of the new releases, and also offering our thoughts on some of the classics of the genre in case you haven't caught up with them.

Keep an eye out for the latest prize-winners in crime writing; we'll give them special attention and offer great deals and early ordering options.

In the meantime, relax with the latest from your favourite authors, and keep your wits about you!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
THE MAN FROM BEIJING
Henning Mankell

Henning Mankell is a man with one foot in the snow of Sweden and one foot in the dust of Africa. He lives for half of each year in Mozambique, writing and directing plays.

He is best known for his novels featuring the morose Swedish policeman Kurt Wallander.

This character arose from Mankell's perception of growing xenophobia in Sweden when he returned there from Africa in 1988.

Wallander provided a vehicle to address crimes of racial intolerance and bigotry.

The tenth (and last) of the series has been published in Sweden, but is not yet translated into English.

Africa is also at the heart of his new novel The Man From Beijing, in which a judge, Birgitta Roslin, is drawn to investigate a mass murder in an eerily silent Swedish village.

What she finds takes her back to the American Civil War, to Chinese slaves in the intercontinental railway, and to China, then and now. And utimately to Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

This is a superb thriller, passionately written, that deals with global issues, particularly the role of China in the future of Africa.

Mankell created a worldwide fan base with Inspector Wallander. He will add to it with The Man From Beijing.

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT
QUIRKY CRIME
THE NO. 1 LADIES' CONTINUES ...
THEREBY HANGS A TAIL
Spencer Quinn

Quirky mystery often falls flat the second time round. A good idea might survive one novel, but look stale in the next. Not so with Chet and Bernie!

Dog On It introduced us to struggling private eye Bernie and his offsider (and the book's narrator) Chet, a dog of large but indeterminate breed.

It was a triumph, and they're back in Thereby Hangs a Tail.

Chet's dog's eye view of Bernie and the world of perps, smells, food and loyalty is consistently funny and insightful. Hired to protect Princess, a very pampered pooch, in the lead-up to a bitterly contested dog show, Chet and Bernie quickly get the sack, courtesy of some less than gentlemanly behaviour by our canine friend.

Not that either of them mind. This didn't look like their kind of job. But when the owner and said pampered pooch turn up missing (kidnapped!) they are back on the case.

And when a body turns up, and Bernie's maybe girlfriend can't be found, the duo's wits, noses and instincts are tested to the full. Chet's early contempt for Princess needs reassessment, while Bernie falls foul of the local sheriff.

It all adds up to a riotous romp wrapped in a page-turner of a mystery. Four paws!

THE DOUBLE COMFORT SAFARI CLUB
Alexander McCall Smith

If you've read one of Alexander McCall Smith's Botswana-based No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, you have probably read all ten.

They represent a delightful haven of whimsy, good manners and optimism for the world seen through the eyes of the unique Mma Ramotswe.

The eleventh in the series, The Double Comfort Safari Club, delivers on every level.

Mma Ramotswe finds herself and her colleague, Mma Makutsi, in the north of Botswana at the Okavango Delta.

This breathtaking area is home to a stunning diversity of wildlife, grasslands and water, water everywhere.

It is also home to more troublesome events - the shady dealings of safari operators, disgruntled guides and sudden death.

While dealing in her placid way with all these issues, Mma Ramotswe must also manage the impatience of Mma Makutsi, whose wedding date seems to be retreating daily, and the unexpected marriage of one of Mr J.L.B. Maketoni's apprentices.

Nothing that Precious Ramotswe and liberal servings of bush tea can't handle...

LITERARY CRIME
THE RELUCTANT HERO
Michael Dobbs

If you like political thrillers and haven't caught up with Michael Dobbs, get your skates on! The Reluctant Hero is his third novel featuring British MP Harry Jones.

Dobbs sends his hero to Ta'argistan (a fictional nation between Russia, China and Afghanistan) to rescue his friend Zac Kravitz.

Zac is being held and tortured in an ancient prison and Harry's access to him depends on his uneasy alliance with fellow MP Martha Riley. Their less than glorious pasts return to haunt them in this tautly written thriller.

Dobbs takes current global issues to create literate and gut-wrenching stories that keep you long after turn-out-the-light time. The Reluctant Hero is no exception.

STORIES TO GET THE HEART RACING

In his fourth novel, Blood Men, Paul Cleave builds his reputation as an uncompromising explorer of the dark side of the mind.

Imagine. You have survived the horror of being the nine-year-old son of a serial murderer. You have a wife and a daughter, a job and a future. And your past lies buried ...

  THE FIRST RULE
Robert Crais

Robert Crais has built a legion of followers with his Joe Pike and Elvis Cole novels. And deservedly so! They are tough, wise-cracking West Coasters in a glorious tradition of them against us.

The First Rule pits them against a brutal group who have stepped over the line and murdered Joe's friend and his family. Pike is a force of nature and the writing is graphic and bloody but remains beautifully crafted.

It's parts click together like a well-oiled pistol.

Crais has developed his characters superbly over a series of novels and they ring true and consistent without becoming templates of themselves.

The First Rule ticks all the boxes for lovers of the tough American crime novel!

HOME GROWN: THE BEST NEW AUSTRALIAN CRIME

FEATURED TITLE: TORN APART by Peter Corris
Cliff Hardy has had a long and strife-strewn career as a Sydney-based Private Investigator.

He has retired.

Well, he's lost his license, is on the nose with the police, and just doesn't have the spring in his step anymore.

He wants to go on holiday, but would like to have a companion to share his travels.

Enter Patrick Malloy, a previously unknown lookalike second cousin with a hankering to visit Ireland and catch up with the "Travellers" in their extended family.

On their return, Patrick is brutally murdered and Cliff is once more on the job, while dodging the attentions of the police himself.

It's a classic Cliff Hardy scenario, pitted against the big boys with no help from the powers-that-be.

Throw in a very attractive widow with a suspect agenda and come hither eyes and you can't be disappointed.

Torn Apart is a cracking addition to the series by the man who reinvented the Australian crime novel.
