BUZZ IN BRIEF
Dear Booktopia Buzz Subscriber,

SPECIAL MESSAGE: Apologies for the delay of the January Newsletter. We got caught off guard with the Warehouse Clearance Sale over Christmas to New Year and sold five times as many books than expected. Hopefully everyone has their books already from the sale.

Much appreciated to all of you for buying so much stock and apologies for those of you that missed out on some titles. We have since changed the website so that won't happen again.

Please sit back and enjoy another one of Toni's brilliant newsletters. She has identified some terrific reads once again.

Regards

Tony Nash
General Manager

Welcome to the New Year,

This month is all about easy reading. Lot's of you will still be in holiday mode, others will be thinking about the year ahead and what it might bring. I hope that I have been able to match my selection of reviews for your mood. It is always such a job distilling the many thousands of new titles down to a workable size to review and it seems that just as many books get published in January as in November!

Many thousands of Booktopia Buzz subscribers took advantage of our first ever clearance sale. In fact we were overwhelmed by your response. For those of you who were away, we will be repeating the sale later in the month.
In the meantime however, we have saved a couple of wonderful specials for this newsletter (details below).

We've been taking advantage of the quiet (not) time of year to plan for the coming many months and we have some great treats in store. In the meantime, whether you are still on the beach or whether you are back at your desk, happy reading,

Toni Whitmont

TONI'S BOOK OF THE MONTH
THE BOOK OF UNHOLY MISCHIEF by Elle Newmark

The Book of Unholy Mischief was flagged to me months ago. Since then, the buzz about it hasn’t stopped. It isn't often that one hears of a literary, historical novel, not too heavy to put off those who are plot driven, not too superficial to put off those who need some meaty issues and excellent character development. Something that both men and women will like in equal measure. Elle Newmark's one-sit read has been feted by no less than three review sites, including the very wonderful LibraryThing whose review can be found here.

So what is it all about?

It’s 1498, the dawn of the Renaissance, and Venice is teeming with rumours about an ancient book thought to hold dangerous secrets. Powerful men will stop at nothing to get it, and those who have it will die to protect it.

Luciano, a street orphan who survives by his wits, is taken into the kitchen of the doge’s palace to be the chef's apprentice after capitalizing on the sensory pleasures of a stolen pomegranate. As Luciano is initiated into the mysterious alchemy of the kitchen, he catches hints of the chef ’s shadowed past as well as murderous plots brewing behind the scenes. Luciano finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue that will inflame his desires, test his loyalties, and force him to a heart-wrenching life-and-death decision.

Rich with historical detail, vivid characters, thought-provoking "heresies," and sumptuous culinary metaphors, The Book of Unholy Mischief is a unique treat.

There is an evocative “teaser” clip on Elle Newmark’s website. More tantalizing however, is the opportunity to join her in June in an 18th Century villa in Lake Como, Italy for a fiction writing workshop.

WHAT TO READ AT THE BEACH
OUTCAST
  PESCADOR'S WAKE
Michael Walters

A series of crime thrillers set in modern-day Mongolia - how good is that!

Walters first visited Mongolia in the early 1990s, when democracy was just arriving to the country. The dabbling poet and short story writer, who’d been raised in the same mining village as D H Lawrence, suddenly found himself struck by the idea that this fascinating country—in such a complex state of temporal and national limbo—would make an extraordinary setting for a crime thriller.

In The Outcast, Ulaan Bator bakes in the heat of an unseasonably hot summer as it prepares to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the birth of the Mongol Empire. Meanwhile, the city faces a series of unexpected crises - an apparent suicide bomber, a dead body in the city museum and an explosion at a political rally.

  Katherine Johnson

A couple of years ago Tasmanian-based oceanographer and science journalist Katherine Johnson won the Harper Collins Varuna Award for Manuscript Development with her first draft of this compelling story.

The beautifully written thriller, Pescador's Wake, is her final product.

The Southern Ocean serves as the atmospheric backdrop to this gripping tale of illegal fishing off Heard Island, with a deadly chase between the Uruguayan master of The Pescador and an equally determined Australian patrol vessel. The real action of course, is with the stories of the human lives caught in the net of treachery and deception amidst roiling seas and deadly conditions. This story of betrayal, love, loss and resilience will appeal to both men and women alike.

THE CORONER
  BREAKNECK
M. R. Hall

Each month there will be one book that captures the imagination of its publishers and at Macmillan, the book that has everyone talking in the office is The Coroner.  Meanwhile, its reviews are equally positive.

From Laura Wilson in The Guardian (UK) in mid-December:
This big, well-executed debut novel from screenwriter and producer MR Hall has meaty characters and a chewy plot in the Lynda La Plante style. Jenny Cooper, newly appointed coroner to the Severn Vale, has all the requisite demons in her past, a liking for red wine and a reliance on temazepam, which she knocks back in such quantities that it is a wonder she manages to stay awake for the action. In the wrong hands, this sort of thing can pall rapidly, but Hall's direct and sympathetic style is such that Cooper is rendered likeable, engaging, and on the side of the angels without ever being smug. Naturally, she oversteps the mark and gets away with a hell of a lot as she investigates a series of teenage deaths in local detention centres, but Hall expertly prevents the plot from teetering over into implausibility.

But a few weeks before the wedding day, Dan is shot dead and MC's world crumbles into pieces.

Detective Kitt Lundgren knows grief only too well, her only daughter has recently died and she knows that MC's only concern now will be to find out who killed her fiancé.

The two women work day and night to discover what happened. Meanwhile, there is a ruthless killer on the loose and Kitt and MC have put themselves right in the firing line.

PLUM SPOOKY
  THREE GREAT NOVELS
Janet Evanovich

I am a late convert to Evanovich, having only recently discovered her particular brand of action, humour and hilarious antics set in Trenton New Jersey. For those who haven't yet met bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, she is eternally caught between two men - the impossibly handsome policeman Morelli, and the impossibly handsome man of mystery, Ranger. While there are plenty of crimes to solve, as much of the action centres on Stephanie's eccentric family, governed by the slightly delusional Grandma Mazur whose chief interest in life is going to funerals and checking out the caskets.

Previously the Stephanie Plum stories 'between the numbers' were only published as novellas so the full-length Plum Spooky comes as a welcome new offering which will no doubt  entertain and satisfy all those Evanovich fans out there.

And for those waiting for their next fix, Finger Lickin Fifteen will be out mid-year.

  Harlan Coben

We love bind-ups and this one is a beauty. Three great novels in one very well-priced book.

Just One Look: Grace Lawson is living a happy, straightforward life in the suburbs with her husband, Jack and two young children. But that security is about to come to a brutal end.

The Innocent: When Matt Walker got out of jail he rebuilt his life, getting a job as a lawyer and falling in love with a beautiful woman. The break in the road seemed only to have made him a stronger person. But now someone is following him and Matt realises that his new existence is under threat.

Promise Me: Driven by guilt of possibly causing the disappearance of a young girl, Myron gets involved in the search, a decision that will mean facing his past. Myron must choose once and for all who he is and what he will stand up for if he is to have any hope of rescuing both Aimee and himself.

The Quilter's Apprentice
by Jennifer Chiaverini
Jennifer Chiaverini has stitched together a wonderful community of followers with her dozen or so Elms Creek quilting novels, her books of recipes and of course, her quilting patterns. We've been sourcing them to order from the US for ages but now, for the first time, her first novel, The Quilter's Apprentice, is available from an Australian publisher. There will be more to come, I'm sure.

The Next Murray Whelan Trilogy by Shane Maloney
Crime, politics, farce, Melbourne and for once, it is fiction. Another bind-up, another big ride.
The Big Ask: A disastrous election result is looming, and Murray's days as a political minder seem numbered. With a runaway son on his hands, the police at his heels, and a gun buried in the backyard, Murray Whelan faces his toughest test yet.
Something Fishy: Even in the political wilderness, hope springs eternal for the Hon. Murray Whelan MP. He has found true love and there is a baby on the way. But in a world of abalone poaching, shady restaurateurs, tree-hugging ferals and teenage romance, you can depend on Murray Whelan to stumble upon Something Fishy.
Sucked In: When the remains of a long-lost union official are found in dried-up Lake Nillahcootie, Murray Whelan soon gets sucked into some murky waters. His old mate Charlie Talbot is implicated, the press is sniffing around and Labor's enemies are lining up for a free kick. Then there's the blackmail attempt. And as if that wasn't enough, there's an ALP pre-selection going pear-shaped.

DIAMONDS, GOLD AND WAR: THE BRITISH, THE BOERS AND THE MAKING OF SOUTH AFRICA by Martin Meredith

The prize was great -- not just land, but the riches it held, in the form of diamonds and gold. What became a country called South Africa was, until 1910, a vast and untamed land where great fortunes could be made and lost where great battles ebbed and flowed and where great men had their reputations forged and dashed.
Martin Meredith's epic account of the four decades leading up to  the establishment of South Africa in 1910 reads like a Wilbur Smith page turner. Now finally in a small paper back, this makes a great summer read for history lovers. To read an extract, click here.

VON GOBSTOPPER'S ARCADE by Alexandra Adornetto

Millipop Klompet and Ernest Perriclof have escaped the clutches of the nefarious Lord Aldor for a second time but the journey is not over for them yet. Twice defeated by the ingenuity of the children, Aldor has returned, this time driven by   a lust for vengeance rather than power. Welcome to book 3 in The Strangest Adventures yet, all written by one very clever Melbourne teenager. Ages 8 - 14.

MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY
Trenton Lee Stuart

Dozens of children respond to a peculiar ad in the newspaper and are then put through a series of mind-bending tests, which readers take along with them. Only four children - two boys and two girls - succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and inventive children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. But what they'll find in the hidden underground tunnels of the school is more than your average school supplies. So, if you're gifted, creative, or happen to know Morse Code, they could probably use your help.

The Mysterious Benedict Society has been a show stopper in the US and is now available here for the first time. This big, thick paperback with a stunning gatefold presentation, is for ages 10+. You read about it here first!
