A 'YUMMY' INTRODUCTORY COMPETITION
Yummy: my favourite nursery stories is a delicious collection of nursery stories and it's yummy in two ways! Firstly, each of the stories relates to food - Little Red Riding Hood will be lucky if she doesn't get eaten up by the big bad wolf; The Enormous Turnip is set to make an enormous soup, Goldilocks has a penchant for honey-drizzled porridge; The Three Little Pigs end up eating the big bad wolf for supper and The Little Red Hen eats a well deserved meal after all her hard work. The second meaning of the title is that this book is so deliciously yummy to look at and read!!
Lucy Cousins, made famous by her hit series for toddlers, Maisy, has collected, retold and illustrated eight all-time favourite stories in this oversized hardback picture book. The illustrations are bright and ENORMOUSLY appealing. The bold, black outlines of her pictures and her simple, modern retellings offer a fresh, vibrant spin on these old-time classics and will appeal to children aged 3-5. Lucy Cousin writes about Yummy: 'It's brilliant to be able to pass on these stories. They are such fun and they touch such deep emotions. My paintbrushes were practically dancing on the paper.'
This is a special book and could be purchased for a newborn or christening - but it's ultimate appeal is for three to fives. With Booktopia's 20% discount to you, this is a book to buy for every child you know under the age of five!

To celebrate the very first Buzz 0-5 newsletter, Booktopia is running a competition and you can win a copy of Yummy and a delightful Yummy poster to hang in your child's nursery. Simply tell us in 25 words or less what the most 'yummy' book from your own childhood was and why. Email your answers to marketing@booktopia.com.au to be in the running.

BABY WOMBAT'S WEEK
Like all babies, Baby Wombat eats, sleeps and gets bored. So like all mums, Mothball sends Baby Wombat out of his hole to explore the world outside. And all sorts of adventure and fun ensues...
Baby Wombat's Week is the long awaited sequel to the much-loved, chart-topping picture book Diary of a Wombat. Mothball, the star wombat in Diary of a Wombat makes her comeback in Baby Wombat's Week, this time, as the tired, sleepless mother of an overly energetic, new baby. There is brilliance in Bruce Whatley's depiction of Mothball as she patiently encourages Baby Wombat through the week. For those of you not familiar with
Diary of a Wombat, Jackie French and Bruce Whatley have created a humorous world in the day-to-day lives of wombats. Of course, the world is fictional... or it? We see wombats running amuck and causing chaos in a human family's backyard: digging new holes, bursting sprinkler systems and cleaning out the rubbish bins. Perhaps it's closer to real life than we realise...

In Baby Wombat's Week, the chaos is taken to new levels when Baby Wombat meets Baby human. They play together, turn the hose on each other, share each other's food, dig holes together and finally find a home together...in Baby human's nursery.

This picture book is packed with wry humour that both children and adults will love. The text is deceptively simple: it's in Whatley's superb illustrations that the story truly comes alive. It's a brilliant book for developing visual literacy, that is, how words and pictures work together to create a story.

Every so often in children's book publishing a book comes along for children of all ages - even children of a hundred and one. Baby Wombat's Week and its predecessor, Diary of a Wombat are two such books. Children upwards of two will adore this book. Including children as old as eight, nine and beyond. I still remember reading
Diary of a Wombat on its publication to a very serious seven-year-old boy who giggled himself silly.

Baby Wombat's Week is guaranteed fun.

Order your copy of Baby Wombat's Week through Booktopia and be in the running to win a signed and numbered
Bruce Whatley print. Offer closes at the end of November.

CLASSIC CHILDREN'S BOOKS - PERFECT GIFT GIVING FOR A NEW BABY
ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

I can't draw my eyes away from this new edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It has been illustrated by one of the world's finest illustrators for children and it brings to life, in a new and inspired way, one of the most well known children's books of all time. Robert Ingpen is masterful in his style. Some of the most familiar scenes in children's literature - the caterpillar on his mushroom, the Cheshire Cat in the tree, Alice on the banks of the river, the white rabbit dashing - are all painted with breath-taking beauty and wonder. Each of the 70 illustrations within this unabridged edition of Carroll's original telling is a work of art at the highest level of integrity. Together they visually narrate one of the greatest stories ever told. This is a hardback, luxury book. Forget buying gifts of jumpsuits or baby bibs for newborns - Lewis Carroll's and Robert Ingpen's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will be treasured for a lifetime.

SMART BABIES
Photographic books are an important resource in a baby's reading development. Unlike illustrated books where the imagination is required to process the pictures, photographs are  from the familiar world of the everyday and are more easy for a child of around 6 months to focus on and identify with. Both illustrated and photographic books are important, but each can develop different skills; in photographic books - ideas of recognition, familiarity, and  an understanding about the world around the baby begins to develop. Smart Babies is a great new series of photographic board books that will help in developing these visual skills. All four books in the series are focused on the day-to-day routines of babies and toddlers, told visually through photos of baby animals. In Mummy's Little Bush Babies the bond between a mother and her baby is explored, Mummy's Little Zoo Babies is about the developing abilities, personality and features of a baby and Little Bush Babies takes the reader through the day in the life of a baby - waking up in the morning through to bed time in the evening. Finally in Mummy's Little Farm Babies the simple text and images focus on friendship. We see how a baby learns to relate to the world around him or her. A great series for growing Smart Babies!

Age Guide: 6 months to 3. But don't be afraid to read these books to children as old as 5! It's okay for them to be reminded about socialising in the world around them, daily routines and being loved by their mums!

RRP: $9.99 each, Booktopia Price: $8.00

Kisses for Daddy continues to be one of Australia's best-loved picture books of all time. It's time for baby bear to go to bed and so begins the nightly ritual of packing up toys, brushing teeth and giving Mummy and Daddy a kiss goodnight. But grumbly Baby Bear doesn't want to give Daddy a kiss and so begins a game where Daddy tries to coax kisses out of Baby Bear. 'How about a koala kiss? Baby koalas give their daddies cuddly, clingy kisses like this...' Daddy tries a crocodile kiss, a giraffe kiss and even a monkey kiss, but Baby Bear refuses each time. Finally as Daddy sadly turns out the light and turns to leave the room Baby Bear changes his mind... and asks for a big Daddy bear kiss. A fun bedtime story, especially for dads to share.

HERE COMES SANTA CLAUS! GET READY WITH THESE BEAUTIFUL GIFTS...
OLIVIA MEETS DAME EDNA
WHO COULD POSSIBLY RESIST OLIVIA?

This scrummy edition of the original Olivia book comes complete with an audio CD of the story being read by none other than our very own Dame Edna Everage. And the reading is full of the Dame's trademark sighs and chuckles. The great beauty of Dame Edna's reading is that one can vividly imagine a young Dame Edna as
Olivia herself. Of course in human form, not as a little piglet. This is a very clever pairing by the publisher indeed.
Olivia is a piglet of very refined tastes. She enjoys ballet, bathing in the sun, the opera, art and reading. In fact her tastes are so refined that she can distinguish quite well the difference between a Pollock and a Degas. So much so that she exclaims as most do in front of a Pollock, 'I could do that in about five minutes'. And so she does. On the living room wall. And like most children who like to experiment with art on walls at home she is sent to the stairs for 'Time out.'
Her reading tastes are similarly refined. Amongst the pile of books
Olivia insists being read at bedtime include the biography of the famous opera singer Maria Callas. She falls asleep dreaming of the stage and opera.
There is no doubt that this little piglet has dreams of being a Dame.
Ian Falconer is both illustrator and author of the Olivia series. It's not hard to see that the whimsy and wit of his illustrations and words have been a result of years working for The New Yorker magazine, the New York City Ballet, the San Francisco Opera and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as set and costume designer. His genius at bringing his skills to books for 4 to 6 year olds is evident in
Olivia from beginning to end.
Olivia has been likened to classics such as Eloise. This might be the case, but Olivia has certainly been established as a gem classic in her own right. Children, especially little girls dreaming of the ballet or stage, will find a best friend in Olivia.

Praise for
Olivia:
"Many dream of dancing on the stage, but
Olivia has the legs for it." Mikhail Baryshnikov
"Every granny will recognise and LOVE
Olivia and her theatrical desires." Dame Joan Sutherland

IVY LOVES TO GIVE with FREE GIFT CARD AND WRAP!
Ivy loves to give presents. She gives a flip-flop to a snail, a pair of reading specs to the dog, a cup of tea to the hen and her baby brother's dummy to the cat. Ivy loves giving, but she seems to get her giving very muddled up! When the confusion in the household reaches its limit, Ivy faces the challenge of matching her gifts up with the people they belong to. She gives the flip-flop back to her dad, the reading specs back to her grandmother, the cup of tea to her mum and her baby brother's dummy back to her brother. Ivy also receives her own very special gift as the story draws to a close.
Ivy is a delightful girl with a generous spirit and she is learning to master the art of giving, which as Ivy shows, should always come from the heart. Ivy Loves to Give celebrates the joy of giving and receiving. It also encourages and gives space to small people, as represented in Ivy, to learn and figure things out for themselves. Ivy learns what giving and receiving is through her own play. Seen from a bigger point of view Ivy Loves to Give is not only about giving and receiving but individuality, growth and development.
The story and illustrations have both been created by rising star Freya Blackwood and the book is based on her own daughter Ivy. The illustrations are full of sweetness, life and fun. The colours are strong.

READ TO ME BOOKS
Some of my earliest memories are of my dad reading to me - putting on silly voices and dramatising the stories we selected to read. It was a time of developing imagination, building vocabulary and learning my place in the world with all its many and varied stories. It was also a special time to share just with dad.

When selecting books to read to a four or five year old, don't shy away from first chapter books or even age appropriate poetry and rhyme. Reading to your child from age appropriate books without pictures will help them to build pictures within their imagination. It will also begin to introduce them to slightly longer and more developed stories.

Each month in Zero to Five Buzz I will review a couple of 'Read to Me' possibilities for children under five.
See below for this months' selection.

WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG by A.A. MILNE

A.A. Milne is famous and long remembered for his character Winnie-the-Pooh. He also wrote various collections of poetry, rhymes, ditties and short stories for children as young as one. When We Were Very Young is one such collection. You will meet Winnie-the-Pooh in these pages but there are numerous other poems, some of which you will very surely know. When We Were Very Young was first published in 1924 but its quality and appropriateness for toddlers is timeless. There are line drawings throughout by E.H Shephard, you will at least recognise his drawing of Pooh.
Don't be afraid to read start reading this collection to an 18 month old. They will love the sound of your voice as it moves about. You could even be daring and put on a posh English accent for example - your child will think you're marvellous! And you'll have a load of fun.
Age recommendation: For children as young as 18 months to all ages.

FANTASTIC MR FOX
There is nothing better you can do to boost your child's reading confidence than reading to them from an early age. So don't shy away from reading short chapter books to your four or five year old. Especially if they are bursting with imagination and itching for stories. And what better place to start than Roald Dahl? Fantastic Mr Fox is a brilliant story to share - it's full of humour, bogus villains and family love. Boggis, Bunce and Bean are the most horriblest, meanest farmers you could ever come across. And they hate Mr Fox more than anything! Mr Fox steals their chickens and ducks, so why wouldn't they employ a giant digger to get him out of his hole? These mean farmers won't stop at anything to catch Mr Fox! But Mr Fox won't stop at anything to save his wife and kids. Mr Fox is clever, handsome and of course FANTASTIC and so it's no surprise that he manages to outwit the greedy farmers and save not only his own family but all the animals that live underground - Mr Rabbit, Mr Weasil, Mr Badger, Mr Mole and all their families.

This story is full of Dahl's trademark humour. It is also full of a Dahlesque sense of morality - it is a story about a father's deep love for his family and his efforts to see them protected from the big bad world outside. Perhaps Fantastic Mr Fox is a good story for Dads to share with their children?

And remember the golden rule in reading to your child - if there are words or ideas that your child doesn't quite understand DO NOT FEAR - you simply need to explain the words and ideas in a way that is appropriate to your child. It's one of the great beauties of reading to children - word building, language development and therefore an understanding of story. In the case of Fantastic Mr Fox, you might have to explain to your five-year-old son or daughter what a belch is. In Fantastic Mr Fox it's not just a burp, but the appreciation of a good, hard-earned meal. What could be more fun?

HELPING YOUR CHILD CATCH THE READING BUG

In addition to Fox's book Reading Magic, Paul Jennings, another best-selling children's author, has written The Reading Bug and How You Can Help Your Child Catch It. It's an excellent book of advice and focuses on encouraging parents and carers to allow kids to discover the books they enjoy reading for themselves. It gives particularly good and reassuring advice about reluctant readers.

GOD'S DREAM

Archbishop and Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu offers here to the youngest of readers a vision of what he thinks God might like for the people of this world. Helping each other, offering a hand to someone else, learning to say sorry and to forgive. His dream includes all people no matter what colour their skin is, where they are from or how they might pray to God.

God's Dream is for all children and is a wonderful book to encourage discussion about the people with which you and your child share this world.

Who better to offer us this vision than Desmond Tutu, a man of great peace?

MOG AND MEG
(AN OLD-TIME FAVOURITE)

If you are after some spooky fun and excellent literature for preschoolers don't forget the old-time and ever-popular
Meg and Mog books. Meg is a determined little witch and Mog is her ever faithful but wary cat. In this original story, Meg and Mog head off to a party with all of Meg's friends. They try and stir up a spell, but something goes horribly wrong. If you can have a sweet book about a witch, this is it! Other books in the series: Meg, Mog and Og,  Meg up the Creek, Meg on the Moon and Mog's Missing.
Age recommendation: 2+

WHAT'S IN THE WITCH'S KITCHEN? (WITH MAGIC CHANGING PICTURES)

For a grown up, I had way too much fun with this book! In my state of madness I even found myself reading it aloud to me! Nick Sharratt is the king of flap books and novelty books and this is his best yet! What's brewing in the witch's kitchen? Open it left or open it right, it might not be dreadful but then it just might! If you open the flap left the teapot will reveal 'Nice strawberry tea!', but if you open it right you'll discover 'Nasty! Goblin's Wee!'. Hysterical. Call me juvenile, but anyone from 2 upwards is going to have loads of fun with this very special flap book.
