THE BEST OF BOOKTOPIA
Dear Reader,

This is a very special newsletter, and one that is going out to a very small number of people. I have included you because I just have the feeling that there might be something here that will take your eye.

There are only about 40 books included here. They are all lavish, they all are put together to the very highest production standards. There are numbered, signed and limited editions, and there are even the rarest of rare facsimile reproductions of three completely unique hand made, hand scribed books from the middle ages. Naturally, the prices of these books reflect their quality and exclusivity.

Most of the books that I have selected are being published between October and December so you might have to wait a few weeks for some of them. I have included fiction plus collections of writings, as well as art, architecture, photography, collectibles and even added a few surprises.  You will know when you see the one that speaks to you.

All of these books will make stunning gifts or additions to your own collections and a handful will turn out to be good investments. Of course, I haven't been fortunate to see finished copies of all of them myself,  (I am often only presented with "blads"  or release sheets) but I have reproduced as much information as possible on the Booktopia site, so please click through and have a really good read, plus a browse through the internal images).

This is a necessarily eclectic list but it represents a roll call of the finest imprints and publishing houses in the world. I do hope you enjoy this selection.

THE COMPLETE VAN GOGH

THE YEAR OF THE FLOOD
THE SECRET HISTORY AND THE LITTLE FRIEND
Margaret Atwood

Author of more than 30 novels and essays, Margaret Atwood is a much awarded Canadian novelist, poet, social critic and campaigner who has been short-listed for the Man Booker prize five times.
The Year of the Flood is Atwood at her inventive best. A dystopic masterpiece, she presents us with a world where times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and both the social compact and environmental stability is wearing thin. It appears that only two women survive on earth - Ren, a young trapeze dancer locked inside the high-end sex club Scales and Tails, and Toby, a God’s Gardener barricaded inside a luxurious spa where many of the treatments are edible.

This is a limited edition, presented in a hardcover slip-case and signed by the author.

  Donna Tartt

Donna Tartt's first novel The Secret History became an instant classic when it was first available. There was a long wait for  her second, and The Little Friend found an instant place on the bookshelves of her legions of fans.
The Secret History is the unravelling of a murder that lies at the heart of secret bacchanal taking place in a college. What follows is a clinical dissection of class, status and sexual orientation.
Fast forward 20 years to the publication of The Little Friend which explores extended family relationships through the scars left when a young brother mysteriously disappears.

This is a limited edition, presented as two hardcovers in a slip-case each signed by the author.

With his unique and laconic view of Australia, Christopher O'Doherty aka Reg Mombassa has been at the centre of our cultural life for more than thirty years.

A must for Mombassa fans.

This slipcased edition is signed and numbered by Mombassa and includes a catalogue of his favourite paintings.

Nadine Coleno

The Hermès scarf is one of the greatest fashion icons of all time. Worn by royalty and celebrities, coveted and admired, and now avidly collected, this deceptively simple square of silk is much more than just an accessory: it is the stuff of legend. Now for the first time the heritage and influence of the House of Hermès is fully explored, from the first scarf’s debut in 1937 right up to the present day.

  Amanda Triossi

When Green silversmith Sotirios Boularis opened his doors in Rome he probably never dreamt that his pieces would still be coveted all these years later. Italianising his name to Bulgari, and then adopting the style of ancient Rome, Bvlgari, he went on to found an empire that has been associated with opulence and high fashion for 125 years.
This book is based on the retrospective exhibition of Bvlgari pieces that was held in Rome earlier this year, with many pieces featuring the trademark gold coin and serpent motif. Some of the pieces were favoured by 50s and 60s icons, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor.
This book is an absolute visual feast.

ART, PHOTOGRAPHY AND COLLECTIBLES
THE HISTORY OF PARIS IN PAINTING
 HELMUT NEWTON: SUMO
Duby & Lobrichon

I have seen this enormous, thick, lavish book and lingered over its reproductions, especially its four enormous gate folds.
This is a very impressive, handsome volume which captures the essence of the most romantic of cities from its earliest beginnings to modern times.
With 350 full colour plates, this is a celebration of all things Parisian through the artist's eye, while at the same time, being a very comprehensive compendium of Western European painting styles.

 Helmut Newton

One of the most iconic photographers of the twentieth century, Helmut Newton's gigantic Sumo broke records for size, sumptuousness and re-sale value. Copy number one of the original signed limited edition print run sold at auction in Berlin on April 6, 2000 for 620,000 German Marks – approximately $430,000. With the physically commanding Sumo weighing in—boxed and shrink-wrapped—at 35.4 kilos, Newton created a landmark book that stood head and shoulders above anything previously attempted, both in terms of conceptual extravagance and technical specifications.
One decade on, this new edition is in a format that allows for a more democratic distribution.
However, proud owners of the new edition won't wrestle with their copy of Sumo. It comes with a unique stand for displaying the book at home.

Taisho Kimono : Past and Present by Jan Dees

Objects of beauty, as well as purveyors of enormous cultural significance, the kimono has a unique place in Japanese life.

  Christiane De Nicolay-Mazery
and Francois De Ricqles

French industrialist and patron, Pierre Bergé is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Yves Saint Laurent Couture House and lifelong partner of Fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent.
In February 2009, 733 pieces from Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent's art collections, were  auctioned off in a record-breaking sale of the century. These pieces had furnished their two  luxurious residences in Paris. The five-volume catalogue published by Christie's for the event sold out before the end of the auction.

The Yves Saint Laurent Pierre Bergé Collection presents a new volume featuring photographs of this fabulous collection in situ in their homes, with detailed commentaries by Christie's experts.
An illustrated appendix includes images of the works sold, accompanied by their estimated values and final auction prices.
This visually stunning and informative volume is a must-have for art lovers and serious collectors.

FOUR CENTURIES OF RAJPUT PAINTING by Rosa Maria Cimino and Rajput Singh

A treasured uncle of mine had a Rajput miniature on his wall which kept me enthralled whenever I visited his home, so I certainly have a bias towards this lovely book (due out December).
In it you will find all the information you need to de-code and fully appreciate the beautiful artwork of the royal courts of India.
With 309 colour images, this is probably the most comprehensive catalogue of Rajput art from the Indian sub continent.

Four Centuries of Rajput Painting - RRP $170, Booktopia price $119.95

MAPPLETHORPE: PERFECTION IN FORM by Falletti and Nelson
Earlier this year there was a huge exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe's work at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence which demonstrated clearly the inspiration that this most contemporary of photographers draws from masters like Michelangelo. Many people know and love Mapplethorpe for his flowers, and for his nudes - indeed with both, his trade mark is perfection in form.
This book has 125 colour and duo tone photos.

Mapplethorpe: Perfection in Form - RRP $195, Booktopia price: $165

MUSEE DU QUAI BRANLY : THE COLLECTION

This museum in Paris opened a few years ago and features art from Africa, Oceania, Asia and the Americas, with the thinking that the art from these regions informs European traditions.

In the case of Ningura Napurrula, her signature black and white motif appear superimposed on the ceiling of the administration side of the museum's building.
This is the first catalogue to be written on the ground breaking collection, and its structure, with contributions from 37 internationally recognised experts, forms a complete reference guide and initiation into the world of non-European art.
